Dining Room in French Country inspired furnishings project. Project scope included selecting new flooring and refurnishing the entry, living room, and dining room of this family home. The client's heirloom dining set and some existing art and accessories was inspiration for the French Country influence. We reupholstered and refurbished the chairs. This budget friendly furnishings project needed to include a pull-out sofa for overnight guests, and curtains for light control when used for sleeping, plenty of seating for hosting gatherings, and storage for some supplies and instruments for family jam sessions.

The home owners came to us wanting to upgrade their kitchen and overall aesthetic in their suburban home, with a combination of fresh paint, updated finishes, and improved flow for more ease when doing everyday activities. A monochromatic, earth-toned palette left the kitchen feeling uninspired. It lacked the brightness they wanted from their space. An eat-in table underutilized the available square footage. The butler’s pantry was out of the way and hard to access, and the dining room felt detached from the kitchen. Lead Designer, Stephanie Cole, saw an improved layout for the spaces that were no longer working for this family. By eliminating an existing wall between the kitchen and dining room, and relocating the bar area to the dining room, we opened up the kitchen, providing all the space we needed to create a dreamy and functional layout. A new perimeter configuration promoted circulation while also making space for a large and functional island loaded with seating – a must for any family. Because an island that isn’t big enough for everyone (and a few more) is a recipe for disaster. The light white cabinetry is fresh and contrasts with the deeper tones in the wood flooring, creating a modern aesthetic that is elevated, yet approachable for everyday living. With better flow as the overarching goal, we made some structural changes too. To remove a bottleneck in the entryway, we angled one of the dining room walls to create more natural separation between rooms and facilitate ease of movement throughout the large space. At The Kitchen Studio, we believe a well-designed kitchen uses every square inch to the fullest. By starting from scratch, it was possible to rethink the entire kitchen layout and design the space according to how it is used, because the kitchen shouldn’t make it harder to feed the family. A new location for the existing range, flanked by a new column refrigerator and freezer on each side, worked to anchor the space. The very large and very spacious island (a dream island if we do say so ourselves) now houses the primary sink and provides ample space for food prep and family gathering. The new kitchen table and coordinating banquette seating provide a cozy nook for quick breakfasts before school or work, and evening homework sessions. Elegant gold details catch the natural light, elevating the aesthetic. The dining room was transformed into one of this client’s favorite spaces and we couldn’t agree more. We saw an opportunity to give the dining room a more distinguished identity by closing off the entrance from the foyer. The relocated wet bar enhances the sophisticated vibe of this gathering space, complete with beautiful antique mirror tiles and open shelving encased by moody built-in cabinets. Updated furnishings add warmth. A rich walnut table is paired with custom chairs in a muted coral fabric. The large, transitional chandelier grounds the room, pairing beautifully with the gold finishes prevalent in the faucet and cabinet hardware. Linen-inspired wallpaper and cream-toned window treatments add to the glamorous feel of this entertainment space. There is no way around it. The laundry room was cramped. The large washer and dryer blocked access to the sink and left little room for the space to serve its other essential function – as a mudroom. Because we reworked the kitchen layout to create more space overall, we could rethink the mudroom too – an essential for any busy family. The first step was moving the washer and dryer to an existing area on the second floor, where most of the family’s laundry lives (no one wants to carry laundry up and down the stairs if they don’t have to anyway). This is a more functional solution and opened up the space for all the mudroom necessities – including the existing kitchen refrigerator, loads of built-in cubbies, and a bench. It’s hard to not fall in love with every detail of a new space, especially when it serves your day-to-day life. But that doesn’t mean the clients didn’t have their favorite features they use on the daily. This remodel was focused largely on function with a new kitchen layout. And it’s the functional features that have the biggest impact. The large island provides much needed workspace in the kitchen and is a spot where everyone gathers together – it grounds the space and the family. And the custom counter stools are the icing on the cake. The nearby mudroom has everything their previous space was lacking – ample storage, space for everyone’s essentials, and the beloved cement floor tiles that are both durable and artistic.

One of the most exciting transformations was the conversion of the third garage bay into a second home office and music jam room. Partnering with JC’s Remodeling, we reimagined this space to include: Custom white oak cabinetry with custom storage built for amps, cords, and other equipment. A mini dry bar featuring a smoked mirrored glass backsplash and a honed marble countertop. Soundproof wood slat acoustic panels for a modern, yet functional accent wall. A curved bookcase detail that integrates beautifully with the cabinetry and wood slat wall, creating an intentional focal point. Curated furnishings like a comfortable tufted sofa (a take on the modern classic library sofa with distressed velvet), and a vintage-inspipred performance rug brought warmth and comfort. I also selected a curvy armless chair which is ideal for guitar sessions. This swanky retreat reflects a speakeasy lounge vibe, offering both a practical workspace and an inspiring creative haven. The client told me after it was all said and done that his kids love to pile onto the sofa and just hang out in the room as a family. Together, they build memories and learn new songs. That’s what good design should do—it brings people together.

The Clients: two passionate chefs. The Commission: to help them design the perfect Kitchen in which to prepare myriad delectable dishes that they love to plan and execute. The Main Requirements: enough storage to accommodate countless spices, cooking equipment and implements; lots of natural light; and a traditionally detailed, but not overdone design. We nearly doubled the size of the original galley kitchen by pushing out toward the backyard; laid out the appliances so as to maximize efficiency and work surface area; and designed custom built pull-outs for spice jars, and storage for special cookware, small appliances, cutlery and utensils. The inspiration for the cabinetry design was the Clients’ impeccable selections of appliances and finishes, and their request for tasteful, simple detailing. The focal point, the heart of this Kitchen, is the beautiful porcelain French stove and custom-designed hood cover. Leaded glass panels in the coffered ceiling add charm and hide roof skylights included in the design to maximize natural light. The large island with porcelain farm sink offers the Clients ample work surface as well as informal seating and storage. A desk / hutch cabinet provides a “central control station” for the family’s activities, as well as display for the Clients’ formal dishes and stemware. Other improvements included a much-needed Walk-In Pantry achieved by enclosing an existing side porch, and enhanced flow between the Kitchen and Family Room. We accomplished this by removing an existing column and beam which previously blocked the physical and visual connection between the two spaces. We are delighted with the transformation of the original little galley into our Clients’ dream Kitchen … and our Clients are thrilled that their new Kitchen has cut in half their time spent in epic cooking sessions on the weekends!

Intentional. Elevated. Artisanal. With three children under the age of 5, our clients were starting to feel the confines of their Pacific Heights home when the expansive 1902 Italianate across the street went on the market. After learning the home had been recently remodeled, they jumped at the chance to purchase a move-in ready property. We worked with them to infuse the already refined, elegant living areas with subtle edginess and handcrafted details, and also helped them reimagine unused space to delight their little ones. Elevated furnishings on the main floor complement the home’s existing high ceilings, modern brass bannisters and extensive walnut cabinetry. In the living room, sumptuous emerald upholstery on a velvet side chair balances the deep wood tones of the existing baby grand. Minimally and intentionally accessorized, the room feels formal but still retains a sharp edge—on the walls moody portraiture gets irreverent with a bold paint stroke, and on the the etagere, jagged crystals and metallic sculpture feel rugged and unapologetic. Throughout the main floor handcrafted, textured notes are everywhere—a nubby jute rug underlies inviting sofas in the family room and a half-moon mirror in the living room mixes geometric lines with flax-colored fringe. On the home’s lower level, we repurposed an unused wine cellar into a well-stocked craft room, with a custom chalkboard, art-display area and thoughtful storage. In the adjoining space, we installed a custom climbing wall and filled the balance of the room with low sofas, plush area rugs, poufs and storage baskets, creating the perfect space for active play or a quiet reading session. The bold colors and playful attitudes apparent in these spaces are echoed upstairs in each of the children’s imaginative bedrooms. Kitchen - kitchen idea in New York

The center's reading and meditation area is surrounded by a forest mural. A bookshelf was designed by DIDA Home in natural wood planks to put all the books and also display for the store’s items that are for sale. In this area we included a curtain from floor to ceiling that closes when meditation or yoga sessions are happening to give a a greater sense of privacy while other costumers remain in the teepee and kitchen/bar areas.
