We worked in additional boulders to make the large boulder less of a singular feature.

This chic, modern design is the crown jewel of this San Antonio community. The outdoor space was designed for luxury entertaining and every element infused with a touch of elegance and functionality.
Beginning with the glass-tiled negative edge spa stylishly separating the two swimming areas, to the fire-wall and putting green, followed by the outdoor kitchen area with a gorgeous fire pit, and lastly, the unique spaces that offer multiple areas of entertaining with a sense of privacy. The porcelain decking flows seamlessly from the house and creates a singular space when the vanishing doors are open.

The backyard was practically a singular selling point to this couple, as it is larger than the interior of their home, and their previous home included outdoor space the size of a small closet. The bones of this space were intact. It just needed a lot of love and some things from scratch. They were a dream to work with, and I think what we accomplished in this space is a dream for them to live with.

This study was built with a tall ceiling, so we had molding placed around the walls two thirds of the way up and selected a textural grasscloth for the lower portion in order to draw the eye down from the ceiling. Warm shades of taupe for the remaining part of the walls and ceiling make the room cozy and intimate. Another layer of texture was added with the geometric hand crafted hair on hide rug, and we selected contemporary but inviting furniture with custom fabrics, and a soft throw pillow. Perhaps the highlight of the room, we chose to use bookcases upholstered in a gray velvet and enhanced with nickel nail head trim. Custom artwork was sourced especially for the room to enhance the color palette and draw out the golden yellow in the desk chair fabric. Window treatments were not needed, since the doors wash the space with beautiful natural light.
2014 ASID Legacy of Design Award 2nd Place Contemporary Singular Residence award.

The clients called me on the recommendation from a neighbor of mine who had met them at a conference and learned of their need for an architect. They contacted me and after meeting to discuss their project they invited me to visit their site, not far from White Salmon in Washington State.
Initially, the couple discussed building a ‘Weekend’ retreat on their 20± acres of land. Their site was in the foothills of a range of mountains that offered views of both Mt. Adams to the North and Mt. Hood to the South. They wanted to develop a place that was ‘cabin-like’ but with a degree of refinement to it and take advantage of the primary views to the north, south and west. They also wanted to have a strong connection to their immediate outdoors.
Before long my clients came to the conclusion that they no longer perceived this as simply a weekend retreat but were now interested in making this their primary residence. With this new focus we concentrated on keeping the refined cabin approach but needed to add some additional functions and square feet to the original program.
They wanted to downsize from their current 3,500± SF city residence to a more modest 2,000 – 2,500 SF space. They desired a singular open Living, Dining and Kitchen area but needed to have a separate room for their television and upright piano. They were empty nesters and wanted only two bedrooms and decided that they would have two ‘Master’ bedrooms, one on the lower floor and the other on the upper floor (they planned to build additional ‘Guest’ cabins to accommodate others in the near future). The original scheme for the weekend retreat was only one floor with the second bedroom tucked away on the north side of the house next to the breezeway opposite of the carport.
Another consideration that we had to resolve was that the particular location that was deemed the best building site had diametrically opposed advantages and disadvantages. The views and primary solar orientations were also the source of the prevailing winds, out of the Southwest.
The resolve was to provide a semi-circular low-profile earth berm on the south/southwest side of the structure to serve as a wind-foil directing the strongest breezes up and over the structure. Because our selected site was in a saddle of land that then sloped off to the south/southwest the combination of the earth berm and the sloping hill would effectively created a ‘nestled’ form allowing the winds rushing up the hillside to shoot over most of the house. This allowed me to keep the favorable orientation to both the views and sun without being completely compromised by the winds.

The view to the courtyard promises to be a singular experience. The pastoral color pallet and expansive windows pair well with the earth tone hand-scraped floor to create a modern yet classical all season luxury living space. This large estate house was carefully crafted to compliment the rolling hillsides of the Midwest. Horizontal board & batten facades are sheltered by long runs of hipped roofs and are divided down the middle by the homes singular gabled wall. At the foyer, this gable takes the form of a classic three-part archway.
Going through the archway and into the interior, reveals a stunning see-through fireplace surround with raised natural stone hearth and rustic mantel beams. Subtle earth-toned wall colors, white trim, and natural wood floors serve as a perfect canvas to showcase patterned upholstery, black hardware, and colorful paintings. The kitchen and dining room occupies the space to the left of the foyer and living room and is connected to two garages through a more secluded mudroom and half bath. Off to the rear and adjacent to the kitchen is a screened porch that features a stone fireplace and stunning sunset views.
Occupying the space to the right of the living room and foyer is an understated master suite and spacious study featuring custom cabinets with diagonal bracing. The master bedroom’s en suite has a herringbone patterned marble floor, crisp white custom vanities, and access to a his and hers dressing area.
The four upstairs bedrooms are divided into pairs on either side of the living room balcony. Downstairs, the terraced landscaping exposes the family room and refreshment area to stunning views of the rear yard. The two remaining bedrooms in the lower level each have access to an en suite bathroom.

The dining room in this tiny Maplewood, Missouri cottage is charming, eclectic, and a little bit funky. From the bamboo chairs with seats upholstered in a vintage tablecloth, to the perfectly aged Asian screens to the whimsical ceiling fixture, this is not cookie-cutter decor. Every element in the space let's you know the person who lives here is singular, creative, and fearless in her design choices.

This remodel encompasses the kitchen, adjacent powder room, and front entry. The kitchen is rooted in nature: rich green tile anchors the space, while warm wood and natural light create a room that feels both timeless and alive. Floral wallpaper in the entry and powder room unites the spaces and extends the home’s connection to the outdoors.

In the Mirò living room there is a refined contrast between vertical and horizontal lines, embellished by decoration in crystal resin and floral interweaving. However, the repetition of the curved lines opens up like a fan articulating its leitmotiv, and combine with the transparencies and reflections of the window and mirror. In the Mirò living room, as with the other furniture from the collection, the singular element is the light, reflected on the surfaces and caught by the crystal details glimmering like gemstones. The latter can be handpicked, illuminating your Arredoclassic pieces with little LED lights, modulating and enhancing the environment to your taste.
