The size of this proposed accessory building was limited to 800 sq. ft., but using mechanical car lifts, we were able to fulfill his program by stacking his cars two high. In that the property also lacked a large amount of usable landscaped outdoor space, I suggested that we landscape the backup area and the access to where the cars would be stored. Working with Andrea Swanson of Thomas Bock and Associates in Walnut Creek, CA, we developed a plan that did just that. We recently completed a vintage bathroom renovation. The homeowners were looking to add a shower to their second floor bathroom, which only had a clawfoot tub. It was also the only bathroom on the second floor of the home. Space was an issue in the bathroom, and a traditional shower over the tub wasn't an option, as the eve created a low ceiling. Instead, we suggested taking out the adajcent closet in the master bedroom, to provide shower space in the bathroom, and replaced the bedroom closet with a custom built-in. The built-in shelves next to the clawfoot tub can be used books, a glass of wine, or bath salts. Additional built-ins, across from the sink, take advantage of the previously unused space under the eve and provide flexible storage solutions. The subway tile in the shower, octogonal tile flooring, and traditional beadboard, gives the bathroom a feel that is in-keeping with the rest of the house. Using the frameless glass shower door, gives the illusion of more space.

The big beautiful Redwoods gave this yard a woodland feel so instead of a fountain or urn, we suggested a natural-looking 26' long stream with a fall near the deck off the bedroom and another one near the main patio. This water feature really makes their yard unique & provides a focal point and tranquil sound wherever you happen to be relaxing - the fire pit, the patio, the deck, or the veggie garden. The gas-powered fire pit fits right in with the feeling of camping in a colorful meadow by a Redwood grove.

Photo by Ross Irwin --- The customers and their children provided lot of great creative inputs to improve the quality of the room. Mrs. Horback ,in particular, suggested the use of wall cabinets with glass inserts near the sink and that was a true touch of class. The whole kitchen has a classic and yet up-to-date look.

Our customer had approximately 550 sq. ft of torch down roof over the North side of the residence. Our suggestion was to remove the original window and add a new door to a new deck. The deck is built directly on to the original surface. The decking was custom built to accompany 4'x8' panels for ease of removing and cleaning as needed over the years and for access to the drain scupper off to the West side of the deck. By making each panel removable, the owner would be able to maintain the deck with as needed. The half walls provide privacy while the handrails give it an elegant look with the half wall and handrails gently flowing into each other.

Cramped kitchen be gone! That was the project motto and top priority. The goal was to transform the current layout from multiple smaller spaces into a connected whole that would activate the main level for our clients, a young family of four. The biggest obstacle was the wall dividing the kitchen and the dining room. Removing this wall was central to opening up and integrating the main living spaces, but the existing ductwork that ran right through the center of the wall posed a design challenge, er design opportunity. The resulting design solution features a central pantry that captures the ductwork and provides valuable storage- especially when compared to the original kitchen's 18" wide pantry cabinet. The pantry also anchors the kitchen island and serves as a visual separation of space between the kitchen and homework area. Through our design development process, we learned the formal living room was of no service to their lifestyle and therefore space they rarely spent time in. With that in mind, we proposed to eliminate the unused living room and make it the new dining room. Relocating the dining room to this space inherently felt right given the soaring ceiling and ample room for holiday dinners and celebrations. The new dining room was spacious enough for us to incorporate a conversational seating area in the warm, south-facing window alcove. Now what to do with the old dining room?! To answer that question we took inspiration from our clients' shared profession in education and developed a craft area/homework station for both of their boys. The semi-custom cabinetry of the desk area carries over to the adjacent wall and forms window bench base with storage that we topped with butcher block for a touch of warmth. While the boys are young, the bench drawers are the perfect place for a stash of toys close to the kitchen. The kitchen begins just beyond the window seat with their refrigerator enclosure. Opposite the refrigerator is the new pantry with twenty linear feet of shelving and space for brooms and a stick vacuum. Extending from the backside of the pantry the kitchen island design incorporates counter seating on the family room side and a cabinetry configuration on the kitchen side with drawer storage, a trashcan center, farmhouse sink, and dishwasher. We took careful time in design and execution to align the range and sink because while it might seem like a small detail, it plays an important role in supporting the symmetrical configuration of the back wall of the kitchen. The rear wall design utilizes an appliance garage mirrors the visual impact of the refrigerator enclosure and helps keep the now open kitchen tidy. Between the appliance garage and refrigerator enclosure is the cooking zone with 30" of cabinetry and work surface on either side of the range, a chimney style vent hood, and a bold graphic tile backsplash. The backsplash is just one of many personal touches we added to the space to reflect our client's modern eclectic style and love of color. Swooping lines of the mid-mod style barstools compliment the pendants and backsplash pattern. A pop of vibrant green on the frame of the pantry door adds a fresh wash of color to an otherwise neutral space. The big show stopper is the custom charcoal gray and copper chevron wall installation in the dining room. This was an idea our clients softly suggested, and we excitedly embraced the opportunity. It is also a kickass solution to the head-scratching design dilemma of how to fill a large and lofty wall. We are so grateful to bring this design to life for our clients and now dear friends.

Stylish brewery owners with airline miles that match George Clooney’s decided to hire Regan Baker Design to transform their beloved Duboce Park second home into an organic modern oasis reflecting their modern aesthetic and sustainable, green conscience lifestyle. From hops to floors, we worked extensively with our design savvy clients to provide a new footprint for their kitchen, dining and living room area, redesigned three bathrooms, reconfigured and designed the master suite, and replaced an existing spiral staircase with a new modern, steel staircase. We collaborated with an architect to expedite the permit process, as well as hired a structural engineer to help with the new loads from removing the stairs and load bearing walls in the kitchen and Master bedroom. We also used LED light fixtures, FSC certified cabinetry and low VOC paint finishes. Regan Baker Design was responsible for the overall schematics, design development, construction documentation, construction administration, as well as the selection and procurement of all fixtures, cabinets, equipment, furniture,and accessories. Another small back yard design challenge One Specialty was happy to take on. Our clients wished to remove a large planter bed against the wall and create a covered seating area in place of it. For the decking, we used Trex materials for lasting durability and easy maintenance and added new steps with lighting. The metal cantilevered pergola custom designed with shade panels provides the needed shade during the hot Texas summers. And to add more luxury, we suggested a vent-less fireplace ensuring the family could enjoy their backyard all year and our clients loved the idea!

Custom Surface Solutions ( https://www.houzz.com/pro/csstile/__public) - Owner Craig Thompson. I consulted remotely (Round Rock, TX) with a DIY friend remotely (Morgan Hill, CA) on his kitchen backsplash, island toe kick, and countertop remodel project. He provided the labor and materials and I coached him remotely through the project. We collaborated on ideas and tile selections, installation methods and suggestions. A multi-colored 4" x 4" Fireclay tile was used to achieve the desired look. In addition, quartz countertops were installed to complete the kitchen. The project came out great as you can see! Our challenge was to elevate builder-grade finishes in a newly-constructed townhome to create an urban retreat with aged patina for this young couple. Soft industrial elements were layered over Old-World inspired details on nearly every surface for maximum impact. We added rustic wood ceilings and industrial beams to create drama, texture, and value throughout. A Parisian-inspired glass/iron wall divider relieves the open concept floor plan, creating a more intimate seating space. Oversized pendants of steel, blown glass, horsehair and faux horn provide soft illumination while drawing the eye upward to architectural ceiling details. Custom midnight blue built-ins create a library that frames the entry and study. The deep and dramatic color palette of paint and wallpaper that adorns the walls is a vibrant mix of cobalt, citron, teal and smoky lavender. Light pours into the rooms from the large windows, reflects off the oversized acid-wash mirror, and forms dramatic shadows on the walls, setting the mood for this home.
