This modern family medical center redefines the clinic experience by blending clinical efficiency with a warm, residential-inspired atmosphere. Designed to reduce anxiety and improve workflow, the building combines contemporary architecture, natural materials, and abundant daylight. Clean gabled forms, light cladding, warm wood accents, and a recessed entry create an approachable neighborhood presence. Inside, reception and waiting areas feel like a modern living space, with wood detailing, soft lighting, and a dedicated children’s corner. Exam rooms and support spaces are organized for privacy, durability, and efficiency. The result is a calm, human-centered healthcare environment that supports patient comfort and long-term operational performance.

With an emphasis on creating a supportive environment that would alleviate long-term challenges, the new master suite included a large soaking tub and an oversized glass-enclosed shower with dual shower heads, built-in shelving, and bench seating. The old bathroom was also converted into a spacious walk-in closet, creating the ideal “his and hers” clothing areas and the new second-story space will be used as a home office.

The Hive This remodel transforms three small, crowded rooms into an expansive, open kitchen connecting directly onto a new backyard deck. The coziness of a former breakfast nook is re-created with a built-in bench with discreet storage, and a pre-existing island is re-imagined with a new marble surface and complementary marble slab installed above the counters. The new modern kitchen, combines bamboo, white, and glass cabinet materials and integrates an original Wedgewood range stove providing a spacious, open environment. Outside, the new deck design addresses a previous basement flooding problem and brings together the upper and lower floors with a floating “crow’s nest” balcony, maximizing available outdoor space for use by both couples. To avoid the need for a support post, the balcony is supported by steel beams cantilevered into the house itself. Its custom rail system is galvanized steel and stainless steel cable, leaving as much space open as possible, and a steel awning overhead protects the new door from potential rain damage. The deck itself, as well as its railings and trellis structure, are built in durable ipe, a smooth barefoot-friendly hardwood. Stairs and seating create a smooth transition from the elevated deck down into the yard, where the new owners installed flagstones and setup their own bee hives.

This West Shore property sits on the shore of Lake Tahoe, where strict TRPA requirements and a fast-paced schedule shaped the design process. The landscape supports a full remodel of the home and guest house, integrating TRPA-required BMPs, onsite stormwater management, and a planting palette suited to the alpine environment. Large-caliper, hand-selected specimen trees were placed with exacting care to frame views, anchor outdoor rooms, and soften the home’s contemporary architecture.
