Beautiful steps up the side of the home are flanked by textural shrubs, succulents and boulders. This active family needed to overhaul this large property but didn't know where to start. "It's like three acres of boring dirt and weeds", said my client. The steeply sloped property did indeed present unique challenges with ever-present voracious deer, the need for erosion control and bank stabilization, large areas that required planting while still considering water conservation, and the need for beautification and modernization to tie into the aesthetic of the newly renovated home. Concurrently, safety and access to all parts of the property were a consideration. Landscaping goals were accomplished through careful plant selection and judicious use of retaining walls in various styles throughout the property. Generous railroad tie steps were used on sloping side yards. The landscaped portions converge gracefully with the existing oak woodland. Children can play and hide in many fun spots, while my client's elderly grandmother can safely walk around.

Sometimes the unique challenges of a site dictate almost everything about the end design. This European-inspired mountain retreat is one classic example. Perched atop a ridge, the buildable area was long but very narrow. A single axial line connects from the initial approach straight through the house and shoots to the view of mountains at the far end. The architecture of the home was envisioned to feel like an old French monastery-turned-family-home which has been restored and added to over several centuries. It is a place of solace and introspection, where the repetition of stone in house and landscape feels imposing, yet safe. Lush plantings line the sun-soaked parking court and dot the back terrace areas, creating delicate play of light and movement. A stepped water rill between terrace levels completes the atmosphere with its soothing babble.

Designing a single bathroom to serve the needs of three teenage girls presents a unique challenge, requiring a delicate balance of personal style and exceptional functionality. Located in Maple Grove, this bathroom was conceived as a durable and stylish solution for a busy family. Our primary focus was on maximizing storage without sacrificing aesthetics. The design features a beautiful white oak vanity with spacious drawers, complemented by an ingenious triple-mirrored medicine cabinet that provides dedicated storage for each sibling. We further enhanced the space with a custom-built, between-the-studs cabinet, a clever solution for storing shampoo and other essentials. Aesthetics were equally important. The clean lines of the Taj Mahal quartzite countertop and the natural wood tones create a bright, inviting atmosphere, while a splash of color and texture is added with a beige zellige-style tile backsplash and a fun, floral shower curtain. Within the shower-tub area, a recessed, wall-to-wall niche ensures ample space for everyone’s products. The result is a shared space that is both organized and elegant. A small backyard and sloped front yard in the Washington Park area had some unique challenges, especially in terms of creating an inviting space for entertaining and relaxing in the backyard. The room had been remodeled about 20 years ago as part of a large addition and consists of three separate zones – 1) tub zone, 2) vanity/storage zone and 3) shower and water closet zone. The room layout and zones had to remain the same, but the goal was to make each area more functional. In addition, having comfortable access to the tub and seating in the tub area was also high on the list, as the tub serves as an important part of the daily routine for the homeowners and their special needs son. We started out in the tub room and determined that an undermount tub and flush deck would be much more functional and comfortable for entering and exiting the tub than the existing drop in tub with its protruding lip. A redundant radiator was eliminated from this room allowing room for a large comfortable chair that can be used as part of the daily bathing routine. In the vanity and storage zone, the existing vanities size neither optimized the space nor provided much real storage. A few tweaks netted a much better storage solution that now includes cabinets, drawers, pull outs and a large custom built-in hutch that houses towels and other bathroom necessities. A framed custom mirror opens the space and bounces light around the room from the large existing bank of windows. We transformed the shower and water closet room into a large walk in shower with a trench drain, making for both ease of access and a seamless look. Next, we added a niche for shampoo storage to the back wall, and updated shower fixtures to give the space new life. The star of the bathroom is the custom marble mosaic floor tile. All the other materials take a simpler approach giving permission to the beautiful circular pattern of the mosaic to shine. White shaker cabinetry is topped with elegant Calacatta marble countertops, which also lines the shower walls. Polished nickel fixtures and sophisticated crystal lighting are simple yet sophisticated, allowing the beauty of the materials shines through. By removing a structural wall and replacing it with a 16-foot steel I-beam, we were able to open sightlines and seamlessly connect the kitchen to the family room, transforming how the space feels and functions. The design balances natural textures and inviting tones, featuring walnut cabinetry, custom green accents, and a one-of-a-kind bar area with an Ash River walnut/resin backsplash. A unique challenge was working around the existing brick fireplace, which we integrated by layering cabinetry and a Cement Elegance surround to visually extend the kitchen while maximizing storage. Custom details like the faux metal beam wraps, appliance garages, and full-height cabinetry elevate both form and function, resulting in a highly personalized space that feels expansive, cohesive, and distinctly Northwest.

Our clients Bill and Tammy approached us to construct a bonus room above the garage for their exercise equipment with an additional bedroom and bathroom for guests. This project has a few unique challenges including installing a 2 hour fire rated wall so that their home can be considered two separate structures for the Philomath fire marshal (so we don’t need to install a residential sprinkler system). We are also keeping their existing home operational during construction including their furnace and electrical panel which are directly underneath the new addition!
