Tucked into Hollywood Hill, this 1980’s built home has been re-designed to enlarge the kitchen by taking over the formal dining room and to re-purpose the unused formal living room into the new spacious dining room. Painted cabinets with herringbone tile and quartz countertops throughout. We have a unique double island design and have incorporated a favorite family cobblers block from the 1800’s into this kitchen. The project focused on the kitchen, dining and formal living room.

The master bathroom remodel was a must! The homeowners hated the existing tile and workmanship. The old bathroom had small split vanities, poor lighting and not enough space. We removed the unused bathtub to free up space for their fun eclectic painted furniture. We installed a frameless shower and added a teak folding shower seat. The new shaker cabinets were painted in Stamped Concrete (SW7655), contrasting with the Web Gray walls. Modela Integrated light custom vanity mirrors were hung above each sink, helped to brighten this master bath in addition to the added recessed lighting. The original built in shelves were redesigned with glass shelves to open them up but keep the added need for storage and to showcase the homeowners travel keepsakes. A heated towel rack was hung on the wall for an additional cozy element. The bathroom is now 100% usable space and the clients love the look! What was once a loft overlooking the kitchen, was enclosed and transformed into a child’s bedroom. J Designs Created this turnkey ski chalet located in Vail Colorado is a house full of primary colors and unique custom pieces. The house is laid out over five stories with a vertical feel and a central staircase connecting everything. To break up the thoroughfare we added a funky striped runner that leads you through the spaces and adds a unique pop of texture and color. Throughout the house each space is full of custom designed furniture pieces by J Designs, mixed with an extensive art collection and a stunning view. + The original architecture and finishes of the chalet were by Interior Design Hall of Fame member Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. J Designs worked to create spaces that were full of color but also played nicely with the white oak paneled walls and the slate floors. + The great room was transformed into the heart of the house, with lounging, dining and a nice area for playing games and relaxing on a custom curving bench, the perfect place for watching skiers come down the mountain through the full height windows overlooking Vail Mountain. + I was inspired by the colors of the bathrooms which helped to create cohesiveness in the bedrooms and to determine the color palette for each room. + In the lower level we transformed an unused workout room into a movie room that has a big enough sofa for the whole family with extra floor cushions for any guests.

A fresh start created a connected space that makes sense in this Arlington (Shirlington), VA condo. The old kitchen was tired and outdated and felt cut off from the rest of the living area. The homeowner's collection of glassware and art was lost in the busyness. While the footprint remained essentially the same, smart touches were added throughout to maximize the functionality and aesthetic. The manmade Quartz counter material continued up the walls for a stunning backsplash look. An enlarged cabinet above the refrigerator transformed that space from unused to functional. An LG double oven range was added to the space of a conventional range. Giant drawers in the peninsula make accessing sullies a breeze. On the back of the peninsula, a cabinet was added in previously wasted space. The cabinetry is Durasupreme with a shaker door style. The lowers are a Lucious Cherry in Dark Stain and the uppers are painted a soft grey. The hardwood floors from the main living area are now carried into the kitchen. New Led slim profile lighting, including stunning geometric LED pendants brighten up the space. The result is a bright kitchen that cohesively brings the living space together and highlights the homeowner’s collected art and glassware.

Nestled on a challenging steep, rocky incline with breathtaking ocean vistas, this backyard was initially nearly unusable due to its limited flat areas. The homeowner's vision was to transform it into a multifunctional space capable of hosting large gatherings of family and friends. The transformative design boasts four terraced decks: two featuring cozy fire pits, one equipped with a hot tub perfectly positioned for sunset viewing, and another for daytime relaxation, alongside a hidden deck designed especially for children's play. The space is further enhanced with an outdoor kitchen, a cascading water feature adorning the slope, seating nestled under a waterproof deck, and built-in wooden seating with cleverly integrated storage, all centered around a playful and inviting pool.

Our clients on this project already had a beautiful home… We just helped them get the living room and kitchen just like they wanted for their new needs. We reconfigured the entire kitchen footprint to get them a bigger work area and moved the pantry to an unused wall in the eat-in area. This allowed us to get them a larger island and much more wall cabinetry. The glass fronts on the upper cabinets, and the puck lights inside, really warmed the kitchen up. In the living room, we added floating shelves with specialty rope lighting along with new base cabinets on both sides of the fireplace. We also were able to provide a new and fresh look on the fireplace tile surround and trim work to the mantle and wall above. These few changes transformed a formal living room into a comfortable destination that they will enjoy forever. Van Auken Akins Architects LLC designed and facilitated the complete renovation of a home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Areas of work include the living and dining spaces on the first floor, and bedrooms and baths on the second floor with new wall coverings, oriental rug selections, furniture selections and window treatments. The third floor was renovated to create a whimsical guest bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room. The upgrades to the baths included new plumbing fixtures, new cabinetry, countertops, lighting and floor tile. The renovation of the basement created an exercise room, wine cellar, recreation room, powder room, and laundry room in once unusable space. New ceilings, soffits, and lighting were installed throughout along with wallcoverings, wood paneling, carpeting and furniture.

This view shows how the surrounding landscaping beautifully integrates the elevated structure into its ravine environs. It’s wonderful how a steep unusable hillside can be transformed into a luxury leisure oasis. This is a testament to the synergy of innovative thinking, engineering expertise and construction savvy.

This elegant remodel included transformation of a dated space with an unused corner tub and a very cramped acrylic corner shower. With this renovation, we were able to incorporate a large vanity, expanded shower, new spa-like soaker tub, glass and quartz niche accents, dark custom cabinetry, heated tile floors, vessel sinks and bold modern colors for a modern look that's both functional & opulent.

A family that spends a lot of time in and around their beautiful saltwater pool, did not have a place in their home that provided them a visual or physical connection. They also lacked any storage for all their pool “stuff”. With small children and a love for entertaining, they needed a room that served and supported their watery lifestyle. We took over an empty and unused notch along the back of the house adjacent to the pool patio to create a new bright and airy pool house. The new out building attempts to unify 4 areas; an existing deck, an upper master bedroom balcony, a lower lawn, and the pool itself, and provide the missing storage. By locating the pool house at the juxtaposition of these areas, the new room was able to provide a new expanded rooftop balcony for the master, anchor and define the dining and barbeque deck, extend and connect to the pool and patio, and create a new access to integrate the lower lawn – and carve out the much needed storage for the variety of pool toys and equipment. The building itself is 400 sf with bath, laundry, storage, mechanical, kitchen, and living. A single new secure connection is made into the house through the existing mudroom. Clad with crisply detailed ship lap cedar, it draws on the existing material palate of the house and nods to the boat aesthetic in expression and efficiency. With pocketing glass walls the pool house is both the utility building needed, and an expansion of the vibrant pool scene itself, inside and outside, along the poolside. Inspiration for a closet remodel in Chicago

A poorly operating bathroom was creating a negative effect on how it was functioning for Tyrone and Veronica. This 120-square-foot bathroom in Atlanta, GA had problems which needed to be addressed. A leaking, moldy shower stall and a large unused jacuzzi tub were the impetus for this bathroom renovation. The lack of storage in the long narrow double vanity with oversized frameless mirror created yet another problem. Our immediate attention focused on replacing the large double window above the jacuzzi tub with a long narrow 6-foot window. Because the jacuzzi tub was rarely used my clients wanted to remove it; instead, they wanted a 9-foot his and hers double shower. We decided to modify the vanity with a custom-built double vanity with an attached tall linen closet. The linen closet inside the bathroom was then turned it into a shoe closet. There is a lack of storage space in the owner’s suite closet, so we decided to convert the linen closet into a shoe closet.

We utilized the unused end of this odd-shaped patio with a hanging twin-sized porch swing. This unexpected feature is the star of the whole patio! Custom cushions and pillows in fabrics that coordinate with the rest of the furnishings tie the whole space together. Fresh white paint and new lighting make the low ceiling lighter and brighter.
