Inspiration for a small contemporary single-wall light wood floor open concept kitchen remodel in Chicago with an undermount sink, flat-panel cabinets, quartz countertops, paneled appliances, an island and white countertops

For this project, the entire kitchen was designed around the “must-have” Lacanche range in the stunning French Blue with brass trim. That was the client’s dream and everything had to be built to complement it. Bilotta senior designer, Randy O’Kane, CKD worked with Paul Benowitz and Dipti Shah of Benowitz Shah Architects to contemporize the kitchen while staying true to the original house which was designed in 1928 by regionally noted architect Franklin P. Hammond. The clients purchased the home over two years ago from the original owner. While the house has a magnificent architectural presence from the street, the basic systems, appointments, and most importantly, the layout and flow were inappropriately suited to contemporary living. The new plan removed an outdated screened porch at the rear which was replaced with the new family room and moved the kitchen from a dark corner in the front of the house to the center. The visual connection from the kitchen through the family room is dramatic and gives direct access to the rear yard and patio. It was important that the island separating the kitchen from the family room have ample space to the left and right to facilitate traffic patterns, and interaction among family members. Hence vertical kitchen elements were placed primarily on existing interior walls. The cabinetry used was Bilotta’s private label, the Bilotta Collection – they selected beautiful, dramatic, yet subdued finishes for the meticulously handcrafted cabinetry. The double islands allow for the busy family to have a space for everything – the island closer to the range has seating and makes a perfect space for doing homework or crafts, or having breakfast or snacks. The second island has ample space for storage and books and acts as a staging area from the kitchen to the dinner table. The kitchen perimeter and both islands are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Paper White. The wall cabinets flanking the sink have wire mesh fronts in a statuary bronze – the insides of these cabinets are painted blue to match the range. The breakfast room cabinetry is Benjamin Moore’s Lampblack with the interiors of the glass cabinets painted in Paper White to match the kitchen. All countertops are Vermont White Quartzite from Eastern Stone. The backsplash is Artistic Tile’s Kyoto White and Kyoto Steel. The fireclay apron-front main sink is from Rohl while the smaller prep sink is from Linkasink. All faucets are from Waterstone in their antique pewter finish. The brass hardware is from Armac Martin and the pendants above the center island are from Circa Lighting. The appliances, aside from the range, are a mix of Sub-Zero, Thermador and Bosch with panels on everything.

This large kitchen was desperately needing a refresh. It was far to traditional for the homeowners taste. Additionally, there was no direct path to the dining room as you needed to enter through a butlers pantry. I opened up two doorways into the kitchen from the dining room, which allowed natural light to flow in. The former butlers pantry was then sealed up and became part of the formerly to small pantry. The homeowners now have a 13' long walk through pantry, accessible from both the new bar area and the kitchen.

We made cabinets out of beech wood, stained to match the complementary stain colors in the rest of the kitchen. In order to stay with the open space concept, we chose to keep it simple and used shaker style doors and drawer faces with solid maple dovetailed drawer boxes. In addition to that, we of course used soft close under mount door runners and soft close door hinges. In the corner base cabinet we used LeMans pullouts. We just loved the detail created with the tile in this kitchen. We left the hood exposed and tiled behind it instead of using a hood box, which would have closed off the space. The hood we used was a Bosch 30" 300 series pyramid canopy chimney hood in stainless steel. The range was also Bosch featuring their 800 series duel fuel slide in model. Photography by : Blake Mahon

DOWNLOAD NOW   One of my very favorite parts of the design process is space planning and considering all the possible floor plan solutions at the beginning stages of the project. What works for one person as a solution may not be the best solution for the next. What you think you want going into the process, may change once all the space planning options are considered. This was exactly the case for this family. They thought they really wanted an island configuration. Once we figured out the flow of the work triangle and saw how great a large peninsula would work for the family, we proceeded along those lines. The peninsula not only works great for food prep, it also allows more of a traditional table seating versus an island with everyone lined up in a row — not so great for daily dinner conversation. To the right of that is a counter depth fridge and a speed oven which gives some flexibility with cooking and reheating smaller meals instead of having to heat the entire oven. An induction cooktop with its easy to clean surface keeps the space looking clean and tidy. Induction heats very quickly to high temperatures so is also wonderful to cook on. To the right of cooktop is a long stretch of countertop perfect for prep space. Storage was very important to the homeowners. We took our time discussing where spice pull outs and tray dividers would be located, how the corner storage would be addressed and the location of the other items such as trash and recycling cans. We worked as many drawers as possible into the space, as I always recommend drawers over doors and/or roll outs as they offer the most flexibility and ease of use. Customizing these details is time well spent as having a place for everything and everything in its place, just like Mom said, really is the key to a functional and professionally designed kitchen. The talls and wall cabinets are white acrylic which combined with the white marble look quartz countertops and full height backsplash keep the room feeling light, bright and airy. The wood toned base cabinets are made of a textured laminate that has the look of wood but is a very easy to maintain product. Brushed gold metal on the hardware, faucet and chandelier add a warm touch and ties into the blond maple flooring. The neighboring breakfast room was also remodeled as part of the project and houses a small coffee station. This casually elegant Westlake home was designed with an ocean inspired color pallet. Every surface was recovered and the kitchen has a new footprint, with an open layout and an added pantry. The Kitchen is home to all high-end appliances including Subzero, Wolfe and a Bosch dishwasher. Brand new dark hardwood floors throughout the home contrast the light colored walls and tile. The beautiful green marble island top is the center of the kitchen, with large restoration hardware pendants hanging above. All accessories and hardware are satin nickel, which ties in with the rest of the home. The backsplash is made of green and blue glass tile with white subway tiles, surrounded by custom cabinetry. A built-in fridge, hood and dishwasher help minimize the feel of the appliances in the kitchen. Roman shades over the windows help soften the space. Tons of storage and large drawers for pots and pans, with a large apron sink at the head of the kitchen. The space boasts garden views for every window with an open floor plan. White Kitchen with Light Granite Countertops

Homeowners aimed to bring the lovely outdoors into better view when they removed the two 90's dated columns that divided the kitchen from the family room and eat-in area. They also transformed the range wall when they added two wood encasement windows which frame the custom zinc hood and allow a soft light to penetrate the kitchen. Custom beaded inset cabinetry was designed with a busy family of 5 in mind. A coffee station hides behind the appliance garage, the paper towel holder is partially concealed in a rolling drawer and three custom pullout drawers with soft close hinges hold many items that would otherwise be located on the countertop or under the sink. A 48" Viking gas range took the place of a 30" electric cooktop and a Bosch microwave drawer is now located in the island to make space for the newly added beverage cooler. Due to size and budget constaints, we kept the basic footprint so every space was carefully planned for function and design. The family stayed true to their casual lifestyle with the black honed countertops but added a little bling with the rustic crystal chandelier, crystal prism arched sconces and calcutta gold herringbone backsplash. But the owner's favorite add was the custom island designed as an antique furniture piece with the essenza blue quartzite countertop cut with a demi-bull stepout. The kids can now sit at the ample sized counter and enjoy breakfast or finish homework in the comfortable cherry red swivel chairs which add a pop to the otherwise understated tones. This newly remodeled kitchen checked all the homeowner's desires.

This Artcraft kitchen cabinetry is a stunning combination of cool, white paint and warm, beautiful Cumaru veneers. Great attention was given to keep all components aligned with each other giving a clean contemporary feel. The SubZero refrigerator features Cumaru paneling that is completely flush with the cabinetry as is the paneling on the Bosch dishwasher. The Wolf ovens are “recessed” into the face of the oven cabinet, keeping the ovens flush with the cabinet faces. All of the base cabinetry is finished in the Cumaru veneers, including the back side of the island which gives the client a lot of extra storage in the Dining room. The Bar cabinetry is also a combination of white paint and Cumaru veneers. The Perlick wine coolers are covered in Cumaru décor panels.
