The customers wanted a retirement home that would accommodate guests. Several design options were presented that took advantage of the site features and views, while accommodating guests and preserving the owner’s privacy. This home was nestled into a hilly site bisected by a large drainage swale. A bridge crossing the drainage swale unified the two halves of the home and provided a dramatic entry. All of the owners’ main living spaces were on one level, and two guest suites were provided in different parts of the home away from the owners’ living area. The design of the home captures the wonderful views from most living areas. The landscaping, shape, form, and materials—stone, stucco, heavy timbering, and a metal roof—offer protection from the desert sun but remain sympathetic to the surrounding environment. Work completed while at SBA.

The home features an open plan, slight lines from all of the spaces to other spaces are provided. The major rooms have wonderful views of all the surrounding area and mountains. Each of the interior spaces are defined by the ceiling volumes. The ceilings have indirect lighting.

This project was a whole-house renovation for a young man who has been in a wheelchair for 10 years and his fiancé (now wife!). The home belonged to the fiancé and needed major modification for the couple to live together. There were multiple levels which had to be traversed as well as a small galley kitchen that would not accommodate his wheelchair. He could not even get into the master bathroom and closet prior to the remodel. This was a wonderful experience getting to help them start their new life together and becoming great friends in the process.

This wonderful transitional style kitchen in Fairfax, VA was previously a very cramped and dark 1958 style kitchen. After removing a couple of walls and demolishing all prior components, we were able to breathe new life into the kitchen.
