2012 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BASEMENT INTERIOR A newer house in the suburb of Ashburn, Virginia, is home to this military couple. With a growing family and a daughter moving back home, they were in need of more space. An unfinished basement offered plenty of space for a remodel, but coming up with a desirable floor plan was difficult due to the location of a stairway that the builder had installed and the location of the furnace and hot water heater. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, the couple came up with a plan that moved the furnace and hot water heater to a storage room and redirected the stairway in order to create a workable layout. The primary goal was to have a home office, full bathroom, guest bedroom and a large entertaining area. The focal point of the design is a new gas fireplace embedded in ledge stone with a large LED television above it. A bar with custom cabinetry, exotic stone countertops and decorative pendant lighting creates a central area for the family to gather.

On the exterior, the desire was to weave the home into the fabric of the community, all while paying special attention to meld the footprint of the house into a workable clean, open, and spacious interior free of clutter and saturated in natural light to meet the owner’s simple but yet tasteful lifestyle. The utilization of natural light all while bringing nature’s canvas into the spaces provides a sense of harmony. Light, shadow and texture bathe each space creating atmosphere, always changing, and blurring the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor space. Color abounds as nature paints the walls. Though they are all white hues of the spectrum, the natural light saturates and glows, all while being reflected off of the beautiful forms and surfaces. Total emersion of the senses engulf the user, greeting them with an ever changing environment. Style gives way to natural beauty and the home is neither of the past or future, rather it lives in the moment. Stable, grounded and unpretentious the home is understated yet powerful. The environment encourages exploration and an awakening of inner being dispelling convention and accepted norms. The home encourages mediation embracing principals associated with silent illumination. If there was one factor above all that guided the design it would be found in a word, truth. The Sky's the Limit for this little "future aviator's" bedroom.The hand painted panoramic wall and ceiling mural features a bird's eye view from an airplane window. One trick I like to use while painting with acrylic paints is to incorporate a small amount of Design 7 Seven Acrylic Glaze onto my paint palette. Historic Captains House in Centerville MA, Captain David Kelly House transforms a small kitchen and living space into a beautiful contemporary yet coastal workable kitchen. With 2 sinks, 2 dishwashers and 2 ovens, they can better service their guests.

This farmhouse, with it's original foundation dating back to 1778, had a lot of charm--but with its bad carpeting, dark paint colors, and confusing layout, it was hard to see at first just how welcoming, charming, and cozy it could be. The first focus of our renovation was creating a master bedroom suite--since there wasn't one, and one was needed for the modern family that was living here day-in and day-out. To do this, a collection of small rooms (some of them previously without heat or electrical outlets) were combined to create a gorgeous, serene space in the eaves of the oldest part of the house, complete with master bath containing a double vanity, and spacious shower. Even though these rooms are new, it is hard to see that they weren't original to the farmhouse from day one. In the rest of the house we removed walls that were added in the 1970's that made spaces seem smaller and more choppy, added a second upstairs bathroom for the family's two children, reconfigured the kitchen using existing cabinets to cut costs ( & making sure to keep the old sink with all of its character & charm) and create a more workable layout with dedicated eating area. Also added was an outdoor living space with a deck sheltered by a pergola--a spot that the family spends tons of time enjoying during the warmer months. A family room addition had been added to the house by the previous owner in the 80's, so to make this space feel less like it was tacked on, we installed historically accurate new windows to tie it in visually with the original house, and replaced carpeting with hardwood floors to make a more seamless transition from the historic to the new. To complete the project, we refinished the original hardwoods throughout the rest of the house, and brightened the outlook of the whole home with a fresh, bright, updated color scheme. In this 2014 Parade of homes, the homeowners wanted an open great room concept for the kitchen, dining and living room space with large windows overlooking Lake Onalaska. The kitchen needed to function well while being warm and attractive. I was able to create some additional countertop work space in the island with increasing the depth of the side panel on the end giving the appearance of a 30" deep cabinet but saving the owners the cost of a deeper cabinet. Because the work triangle was getting to be too large using the main sink, we added an additional bar sink in the island giving a more workable space. In the compact laundry room, with the window above the washer and dryer, there was no space for storage for the detergents, so we took part of the 6 foot closet from the adjoining bedroom and recessed a laundry tub and wall storage cabinet into that space. ***Dura Supreme Authorized Dealer***

This Kitchen was completely updated with a full gut and rebuild. Siteline Cabinets in Mushroom color, Quartz Countertops form MSI and a Marble Hex tile Backsplash makes this kitchen sparkle. Vaulted ceilings presented challenges but were solved by extending the vent run to 14 ft. The clean lines of the JennAire appliances give a very transitional look to the room. The peninsula was converted to an island make the kitchen much more workable for this retired couple. The floor was made consistent throughout the house making the flow seem seamless from room to room.

Solid Apollo LED. In this kitchen remodel, the owners wanted to get away from the hassle of traditional lighting and wanted to try LED Lighting. Here the Premium LED Light Bars in warm white are used. As the Premium Bars are modular, anyone can connect up to 10 light bars in a row. Here the Premium Light Bars are used as workable under cabinet lighting and as cove lighting under the main counter to highlight the shelves and bring in extra light to this normally dark area of the kitchen. The bars are controlled and dimmed using the inline Dimmer Switch for Premium LED Light Bars.

A gorgeous kitchen makeover. Green Mountain Builders transformed this tired Bonita Bay kitchen into a spectacular, workable space by relocating appliances, upgrading all appliances, and adding designer finishes and features. They also created additional storage space and two-toned cabinetry with multi-level peninsula with seating for four. Dramatic lighting and center chandelier provide additional light complementing the natural light streaming through a transom window over the cabinets. The multi-toned countertops add an elegant touch, while the beautiful veined top is also utilized in the backsplash.

(This is a 3D Design - NOT a photo!) The client REALLY wanted to have a chair in the master bath suite, but the existing closet was taking up just a little too much space to allow for it. With the help of 3D visualization, the client was convinced that giving up a foot of closet space was workable AND gave her the luxurious bath (with chair!) she wanted. Added bonus: Envision 3D designed a new space-efficient closet!
