Need Help

I desperately need help in choosing accent pieces. Rug, pillows, art work and tables. I don't love the sectional (husband picked ot out). Should I paint the stair rail? The paint color is SW Functional Gray. It's a open concept family room.

Either a large canvas wall art over the sectional ( needs to be 3/4 the size of the sofa) or 3 similarly framed prints hanging vertically over the sectional on that wall will help. You need to add an accent color for more depth and interest. A yellow or teal or even an orange will work. Add it in the art work and some pillows. Technically , you should have all the front feet or you sectional on your area rug. However I know you have intentionally angled it which is fun. Perhaps you could add a solid color larger area rug UNDER your graphic one. So think a yellow or teal peeking out underneath. You have great taste- lovely chandelier and lamp! You might want to add a small console table under the stairs to help hide you cords and to put your media ( gaming console?) on.

I 'painted' a teal carpet in your space, added some colorful pillows and drew in a console table - hope this gives you some ideas:

Love your ideas. I agree with all of them. l was leaning towards teal as an accent color. Do you have an idea for an art piece. I am truly lost.

Lots online and if you have a Home Goods near you they often have lots of canvas art.

Your room is just screaming for color. There's 2 routes you can take to start.

    1. Fine a large contemporary abstract or landscape from Over stock.com or Great big canvas.com. Take one strong color from the painting and get 8 solid colored accent pillows to match. If you get printed pillows or patterns you might make the room to busy.

    2. Or find a large area rug from Overstock.com and do the same. Choose one strong color from the area rug and choose your painting and your accent pillows. I would place a banana plant either behind the sectional or next to the TV. Since the walls and the sectional are so neutral, you may try teal green, light blue, red or orange for color. What ever you do don't do pink.

    Just my 2 cents

I would paint the stair rail the same color as the walls - now it competes for attention with other items in the room.

I would love to see a larger rug and I think if you can purchase 2 more curtain panels that would be a nice addition too. I would hang them to cover the wall so it looks like one continuous window with no breaks. So you would have 4 separate hanging panels. I've included a photo a recent client where I did a similar install.

It's hard to tell about color in a photo. I would recommend you find some things in your house that you love the colors of. Maybe a blouse or a sheet or a bedspread that you really love. Lay these things in on that sofa. With any luck something will jump out at you and then you will know some colors you can work with. Then shop for wall art, rug, lampshades, pillows etc in those colors and you will have a winning color scheme.

Since you provided the paint color, I took the liberty of plugging it in to artbyhue.com. It returns over a 1000 pieces containing that color sorted by color dominance. There is a big range of styles, sizes and prices. Click here to see all the art.

Here are a few of my favorites from there, but of course our tastes could be very different :)

I hope you find something you love!

Susan your ideas are on point. I also like the idea of the extra curtain panel. I will try and move the sectional away from the wall tomorrow.

Here are two abstract art pieces. One with the colors like overstock.com photo and one with branches that matches your existing color. #133a and #208 if you are interested feel free to check out my profile for abstract art.

Have you tried moving your sectional at an angle facing the fireplace dead on.The fact that you angled the carpet that way makes me think that's what your eyes see for the furniture placement.

I tried to angle the sectional. It's too big. The chaise is too close to the staircase wall. It creates an awkward narrow walkway. With it angled that is the only path to enter the room.

I would have suggested angling the sectional too. Too bad it doesn't work, however you have gathered lots of good ideas- especially continuing the curtain wall. I would like to see more ROUND shapes- rug, tables, possibly a sunburst mirror.

Made a few changes this weekend. Moved the sectional away from the wall and centered the rug. My new bar cart arrived. I plan to order a new rug when Rugs USA have there 80% off sale. Also ordered new curtains. Art work is next on my agenda.
