I removed one lantern and it looked even worse...I can look for a floral arrangement. I tried one but it looked so bad, it needed to be so much taller i think. I like the symmetrical look. I thought about removing the one lantern and doing a smaller one on the side with the lantern as well, so it would have a short and one tall one. I found online the mirror was supposed to be 5 inches above the table, so that is what i did.

I did, i was having trouble trying to get it stay on the table...it kept sliding off/falling down.

Instead of the lantern, add a buffet table lamp in the dark corner. If you can, get a larger mirror and Hang it higher. Add some colorful decorative vases or 2. Everything you have just blends in with the wall right now.

The mirror is hung too low, it's too small, too wide and to close to and similar in height to the lanterns.

Try it vertically and see if it occupies more than a third of the width of the wall. See if the lanterns work better.

The lantern symmetry also might not work. Try a display offset to one side or the other with 3, or 5 objects that restate existing colour and material and also add an accent, like orange for example.

The display should form a pleasing cascade or triangle shape and the mirror and table should form the same shape.

Think layered hills in a Japanese landscape.

Live plant material or flowers would soften and pretty up the console display.

Agree with outshopping to change the orientation of the mirror. Group accessories in 3s using similar texture, colour or material.

The center of the mirror should hang 60" from the floor so the middle is roughly eye level. The composition is so monochromatic. Try adding a stack of books or a pretty bowl for keys, etc. Have you considered painting the wall a color?

i did try books they were just too large, i will need smaller books. I used some large books though.. I had the big black tom ford book up there, which is huge. Im avoiding painting because the house was just built, they arent coming for another 10 months to fix all the nail pops. After that point, ill probably paint it.

If you don't want to buy a bigger mirror - I agree it is too small, consider painting a frame on the wall (just a large rectangle of colour and hanging the mirror vertically. I like the two lanterns (matching) and would suggest adding a stack of vintage books or decorative coffee table books, an objet on top of the books, and a low, shrubby plant. Look around your house for things of different size and scale and play around with composition. I think taking photographs help you "see" it objectively.

No I just bought the mirror and I tossed the box so im out of luck on switching the mirror out and I like the mirror.

I agree. I think the mirror should be placed vertically. Also, it may just be too small for the space if turning it vertical doesn't work.

With the mirror a diff way but leaning on the table, I do not like it that way. Books on the left. I ordered the smaller lantern to go with the larger one on the left to see if i like that better. I wont be changing out the mirror, i know that everyone keeps mentioning it...sorry I cant buy another one, i cant justify that. Im open to other suggestions but I need to keep that one. I know it was a mistake, I should have bought a bigger one but the table is 52 and the mirror was 36 so when i googled...i thought that was ok because it was 2/3.

Hang mirror vertical - needs some element contrasts, like a wooden box, lamp on the side, some greenery, a punch of color. Move the box/stool underneath to the left add some books beside it and put one of the lanterns on it. Decorate in 3's or 5's - I personally like layers of decor.

That looks great! Hang the mirror on the wall and order the smaller lantern...you're done :)

It's all monochromatic. No color or interest. Add a picture instead of a mirror.

Well there will be color with a bench, which i have yet to find. I can put colorful flowers on the books? Already ordered the smaller lantern ;)

I agree the mirror should definitely be hung vertically on the wall. What about a group of three items to the left of the mirror? Lantern, plus a tall vase with something like forsythia or pussy willow branches along with a third item that is lower than the other two. I have attached a photo of a similar grouping with a tall vase to add height beside the mirror. It is from a bathroom, so is not completely appropriate, but might give you an idea.

Wow ithink that looks so much better vertically with the lanterns together. Keep tweeking a little and try a roundish low vase, bowl or lamp.

I like the idea of the lamp but i tried it last week (before ordering the lanterns) and I hated that you saw the cords...there was no hiding the lamp cord.

if i decide i like the lantern on both sides, should i do like a bowl in the middle? or books then bowl on top? or maybe a floral arrangement?

Hang the mirror vertically off center to the left, then add two small framed art pieces or two small mirrors. Doing this will broaden the space. Nix the lantern and add a live plant, like pothos that will add color and can dangle down a bit. A bench would be nice in a color.

You could stick the cord behind the tables' leg, you would hardly notice it this way. Try putting it on the left side.

you cant hide the cord bc where you have to plug the cord in is right in the middle of the table....it doesnt work well really.

As soon as we paint that wall (in a while) you will see the cord even more.

Got a bench on my lunch hour!!! So exited will post photos tonight with the bench and the mirror hung vertically

needs more color - paint a wall or get more color in the pieces. I would not worry about the cord of a lamp, just paint it the same color as the wall

painting the wall has to wait bc of the builders. BUT i picked up a few things today that I think will help with color! :)

I am already much happier. Mirror isn't hung yet, but I already think this looks better. People have said to switch out the matching lanterns and do them on one side with a smaller one. I have ordered the smaller one but it's not here yet. I'm not sure though now because I like this! I'm much much happier with this now!

I will do a diff color flower but the white is all I had for now. As soon as I see a colored arrangement I like ill swap it out.

Maybe some family vintage photos. I have many of those next to mirrors and over tables/consoles. I think it might work.

I'd like to see the lanterns next to each other. Another way to "enlarge" the mirror is to paint a larger rectangle on the wall beneath it. The color needs to provide contrast for the mirror and coordinate with something else in the area. You're getting close.

When you hang the mirror, the bottom edge of the mirror should be about 6" maximum above the height of the console table.

I know people keep saying to paint the wall, I can't yet because the builders will only repaint in the org color used when the come fix all of the nail pops. For now I'm stuck with the off white. Ideally I want the whole wall painted a light to medium gray.

BeverlyFLADeziner: when I hung it in the first photo above I had it 6 or 7 inches and people said it was too low...I've googled and there is some seriously contradicting advice on hight above table....

People said it was too low when it was positioned horizontally. Now you have different situation and different rules of harmony work.

I agree with leelee, as the lantern should contrast with the mirror and console. You have all cool colors and tones and it would be nice if you incorporate a small wicker type tray for keys and sun glasses. Have you considered a runner to add here? Have fun with it.

I did call the store they are willing to let me exchange that mirror for a bigger one, if i can find one i like. I really love this exact style...if they dont have a bigger one...i may just keep it because its the style that i love.

I think your mirror looks big enough with the new arrangements.

I went and checked it out the mirror is gonna have to be ok. The only one they had similar was double the price. I'm content with this one for double the price.

Try adding some color with the lantern's candles. And I think getting the smaller one and placing them on the same side of the mirror will look good. Placing on opposite sides... not so much.
I like having a place for keys and clutter at the entry, a nice colored bowl or a covered box to hide keys, sunglasses etc on the opposite side of lanterns would break up the white.
Vertically hung mirror gave some much need height, looks a lot better.

I like the new arrangement you have! I never buy the 5" or 6" above the table rule.. All mirrors or art in my house is hung with the center 57" above the floor.. Why? I've always heard that's eye level for the average person in the U.S.A. :) I think your mirror needs moved up some but take a step back and look at the area. Is it dwarfed by the mirror level in your opinion? Take a picture both ways.. How it feels to you makes the rules you will follow in your house.
