It looks too crowded in the space. Can you move the bench to another spot? I would also move the cabinet and mirror to the right so they're more centered with one of the wainscot frames. If you keep the framed pictures, use them over the chest of drawers instead of the mirror. They would need to be lowered and closer together over the chest of drawers.

The orchid lamp and bowl are placed as if they're symmetrical but they're all different heights.

I would maybe just keep the lamp in the centre of the console and in the centre of the mirror and maybe find another home for the other bits, even though it's a shame to lose the sharp pink accent.

I'd lose the tiny pictures and choose a single larger abstract painting above the bench (which could use a little space between it and the chest) maybe lose the floor vase and put some space between the two pieces...

Also...
Maybe loose everything but the lamp on the chest and add a tray or stack of books or something instead long and low

All your pieces are beautiful. What if you switched them around? Move the mirror and cabinet to where the art on the right is, and then move the bench to the other side and center both pieces of art over it?
That way you'd be looking straight at the bench and art as you come down the stairs, but otherwise it doesn't take away from your real focal point, which would be the mirror and cabinet.

If that doesn't work, I agree with some of the other comments - it would probably look less busy without the bench. Maybe you can add a smaller chair if you still need somewhere to sit?

Not an expert but I think I have good taste. Lose the art. Take down the bowl and pink flower. Put lamp on other side. By the bench. Then try placing white vase with stems but no flowers on the other side of lamp. You may need another vase. Maybe glass. The white is harsh. But try that. No money spent. Just movement.

Well, my daughter was peeking over my shoulder as this loaded and when she saw the pic she said "ooh, yeah, yeah, THAT!" So you're on the right track for sure, if the 7 year old vote means anything.

You've gotten some great advice above to make all the beautiful elements work together.

Your contractor is wrong about everything: 1/2" gap is too too much, his installer, his measurements, the whole job is ridiculous. If you paid with a credit card, you may be able to recoup the costs. If you paid by check, can you stop the check? If you haven't paid, don't. This is a horrible job.

Try it. Take a pic and then I can see what it looks like. I do think you may need to change vase.
