SharpSinks (stainless steel)

Does anyone know if SharpSinks have good quality ss sinks? I am looking at a 16 gauge single basin. Our countertop installer is offering it for free as part of the granite countertop install. I can't seem to find any reviews on this brand. Thanks so much!

I'm a little late to this conversation, but I wanted to say that I am familiar with SharpSinks.

They are excellent quality sinks. I don't think they're offered in the eastern US yet, so some people may not have heard of them. I have one of their 16 gauge sinks in my house - it's the best sink I have ever owned... by far. I have done a lot of research on the subject, and I found that SharpSinks are as good or better than the top "name brands". When selecting a sink, the things you want to focus on:

Gauge of steel - lower is thicker
CrNi content - 18/10 is best (luster and durability). Cheap sinks have 18/8 CrNi content
Good Sound Dampening (underside) - this will make the sink "sound" nice, and not tinny.
Nice finishing techniques
Warranty - should be lifetime on a good sink from a good manufacturer

Also, 16g sinks are superior in EVERY way to 18g sinks. It's a simple fact. If someone is trying to tell you otherwise, it's because they are wanting to sell you an 18g sink.

Most of the time, the sinks offered free are not high quality. You want 18 gauge, first of all. If that sink is being undermounted, I recommend making sure you get a nice sink because the only way to replace it is to take off the cabinet doors and replace it with exactly the same sink. Ask your countertop people if they have any sink upgrade options. If not, find your own sink. The extra money will be worth it. Allorausa.com sells budget friendly stainless steel sinks that will hold up under the counter.

I thought 16 gauge (i.e. lower number) was the thicker one, Granite Grannies. Am I turned around?

16 is, but 18 is optimal for your sink. You don't need 16. For instance, if you look at Blanco's Steel Art line (which are really fabulous by the way), they use 18 gauge. If you're getting it for free, chances are they got a better deal on the 16 or just got it to make you think it was higher quality. 16 is not necessarily better than 18, often the other way around. It's not so much how thick the sink is as the makeup of the stainless steel and how it's built and polished.

I can't find any information on any sinks with a brand name "Sharp" which means they are probably a cheap, generic brand like the ones most fabricators offer for free.

It's the grage number that counts. The lower the number the better the quality .14 is very good, I find 16 works well too.

Granite Grannies, thanks so much for your insight. I am just waiting on a quote from another installer to see what type of sink they are recommending and in the meantime am looking at the website you mentioned. One thing I have learned thus far is that it's important to have some type of secure 'hooks' or fasteners which essentially glue the undermount sink to the granite as apparently the industry is facing many instances of sinks falling right through!

Yes, that's right. We use a rail system. It costs more for us, but it mean no attaching anything to the cabinets, and you don't end up seeing the sealing material between the sink and granite. More often than not, if you sink is undermounted improperly, it will just detach at one point initially rather than falling into your cabinet one day. If you find a fabricator you trust to do quality work, they will know how to properly install it and will come back to fix it should it ever fall.
