Miele W1 - first repair at 11 months

Well, I have had the W1 for 11 months now and it just stopped working. I had to call for service due to a waterproof system fault. So my machine will be out of commission for 1 week until Miele comes to fix it. Miele technical services told me that this is an unusual error for a relatively new machine, but still disappointing that it happened.

Yes, any appliance failing at 11 months would be disappointing. I'm old enough to remember when we could buy appliances and they didn't need service for years, if ever. The lonely Maytag guy was not fictional ;0)

Nearest Miele service more than two hours from here is something that has kept me from considering the line. I know they would send someone trained, but surely not next day or even two days.

Best of luck with your fix, hopefully this is a quirk and won't happen again where your machine is out of service.

I know! My mother is still using her old Maytag Dependable Care washer, which I think dates from the 1970s. Of course, it doesn’t wash anywhere near as well as my Maytag, but it does not break.

Sorry-meant to say the Miele beats the Maytag hands down in terms of cleaning, assuming it is working.

    @C J

Have you tried unplugging the power cable from the wall and plugging it back in?

Yes, I did. It went into error mode again as soon as I replugged it in, no matter what cycle I turned the dial to. It apparently is not one of those errors that resets. And Miele tech support said the only solution is replacement of the hose, which they said was a quick fix. Quick in the sense of time it takes them to replace, although it does take over a week to schedule the appointment.

    Update on waterproof system fault:

it appears what what MIGHT have happened was that oversudsing created an overflow to the drip pan, and a float in that drip pan then shut down the machine.

when the water in the drip pan at the bottom of the machine evaporated (this took at least two days because I tried the machine again after the initial error it still wouldn’t work), the float switch no longer kept the machine from working, and it was good to use again.

I don‘t personally add a lot of detergent, but I have found when washing rags (typically imbedded with lots of detergent and chemicals), I can get a lot of sudsing even without ANY detergent. And I think that’s what happened.

So so there was no repair needed per se. Only an education about the machine.

Thanks for this information. I have washed rags containing dried detergent from cleaning the floor or other things and have noticed the residue in the rags. What I do is a prewash, or in the case of the W1 an Express wash without detergent and have the max rinse level set, which will give a wash and two high-level rinses. Then wash the rags with a small amount of detergent but on the Sanitize Program or Extra White. I keep the max rinse level set for the real wash.

Jerrod- That makes a lot of sense as an approach. I have sometimes tried a QuickIntenseWash first (without any detergent at all), but have found that even then I can sometimes get huge sudsing (I think that particular cycle really agitates the laundry, hence it creates a lot of suds). Maybe Extra Rinse or the Express Cycle would work better.

In terms of Max Rinse Level, is what you mean going into the Settings for the machine, and choosing max rinse level from there?

Yes. I go into the settings and select Max Rinse Level from there. There is also a Water Plus Setting under options. Options are highlighted on the panel after you select a program cycle that you want to run. I have been meaning to try that to see if this will activate Max Rinse Level or if it just adds a bit more water, but I haven't tried that yet.

C J, did it take a lot of arguing for Miele to agree to replace the machine?

I must admit I lost my temper at one stage, but the key turned out to be escalating the case to their quality assurance department. The regular technical services area was not very receptive, but once I wrote to quality assurance and outlined my case (and related that I had been without a washer for 1 month with no end in sight), they were relatively quick to offer a replacement machine. So quality assurance was responsive, technical services not so much. That being said, I am keeping my fingers crossed as I do not have the new machine yet.

Glad they agreed to replace your machine. Hope you get the new one soon.
