Plaster is the general trade name given to describe the finish applied to a concrete pool's surface.

So Pebble Tec is considered plaster.

Plaster finishes come in different forms and colors. The "traditional" plaster of years ago, and still used today, is mainly marble dust and white cement. Dyes are added to produce gray finishes if desired ore even black.

Finishes with small bits of quartz are considered exposed aggregate finishes, but are still considered plaster.

The exposed aggregate finishes are made in batches and pre-measured with ingredients to ensure a consistent composition. Some have larger pieces of aggregate, some small.

Pebble Tec, Hydrazzo, Sun Stone Select. Diamond Brite, Wet Edge,etc are a number exposed aggregate finishes in the pool industry that are referred to as plaster.

I wanted to post this explanation so you can understand the differences and terminology.

To answer your question, yes, you can re-plaster any pool. The original plaster though must be sound in regards to bonding to the original substrate. If there are hollow areas, bubbling, cracking or de-laminating, that must be removed until you find areas where the material properly bonded.

In some cases, we have completely removed old plaster, as the material never adhered properly from the start.

After a thorough cleaning, a bond coat must be applied to the surface. This allows the new plaster to bond with the old plaster. Once the bond coat is applied, the new plaster can also be applied.

Start up procedures, i.e, water treatment, etc.. are still the same for any plaster finish. ANY plaster can be destroyed if not properly cared for.
