Does the baseboard have to match the stairs?

I'm planning on painting my living room walls a soft dove gray (or possibly a light grayish blue) and paint the baseboards white. But I don't want to paint my stairs. Would that look weird if the stairs and the baseboards didn't match? Should I paint my window trim too to match the baseboards, or leave them wood to match the stairs? Any rules of thumb here? I appreciate your opinions!

PRO12 years agolast modified: 12 years agoFollow the baseboard around and up the side of the stairs, as it is trim, when you paint the white. That includes the stained trim running up the solid wall.
The treads can remain stained.

If you want to paint the riser (that is my taste), I would do that too. If you paint the riser, don’t forget to paint the bottom riser on the floor.

Are you keeping the runner? - 12 years agoIf you click on the photos above, they will enlarge and show you a darker bottom step and white trim.
I think it will be a nice detail if you just keep the wood colour of the stairs as is and only paint the baseboard white.
- 12 years agoOr you could do as Judy showed you, which is what you see most. Another option would be something like this (excuse the sloppy paint job). Basically you can do what you like ;-)
