Poppies are a great way to jumpstart a new native garden and absorb extra nitrogen that would otherwise fuel weeds. And they look so cool with terra cotta.

Tucked back into the hill behind the beach at Wategos Byron Bay, ‘The Wing House’ as it is known occupies a commanding position with great views out to Julian Rocks. The slope is steep and the house is positioned at the rear of the block so the garden needed to enhance the entrance experience; help absorb the house into the terrain and simplify the outlook from the house to the ocean. The structural gestures in the garden are subtle with emphasis on natural materials of local origin and plant material that was cohesive with the natural surrounds and requiring minimal maintenance.

Above a newly constructed triple garage, we created a multifunctional space for a family that likes to entertain, but also spend time together watching movies, sports and playing pool.
Having worked with our clients before on a previous project, they gave us free rein to create something they couldn’t have thought of themselves. We planned the space to feel as open as possible, whilst still having individual areas with their own identity and purpose.
As this space was going to be predominantly used for entertaining in the evening or for movie watching, we made the room dark and enveloping using Farrow and Ball Studio Green in dead flat finish, wonderful for absorbing light. We then set about creating a lighting plan that offers multiple options for both ambience and practicality, so no matter what the occasion there was a lighting setting to suit.
The bar, banquette seat and sofa were all bespoke, specifically designed for this space, which allowed us to have the exact size and cover we wanted. We also designed a restroom and shower room, so that in the future should this space become a guest suite, it already has everything you need.
Given that this space was completed just before Christmas, we feel sure it would have been thoroughly enjoyed for entertaining.

This contemporary kitchen was in need of a lighter and brighter counter top and backsplash. The black granite on both was absorbing all the light and distracting from the beauty of the newly refaced bamboo cabinets. A pallet of light grey and charcoal grey Silestone quartz counter tops were installed with a suede finish. The glass mosaic backsplash adds interest, texture and color. Now the kitchen and adjoining hutch and hall cabinets reflect the style of the rest of the home.

This lower level space started off as a storage space for inherited household furniture and miscellaneous infrequently used items. Pierre Jean-Baptiste Interiors reimagined the space as it now exists using some of our clients few requirements including a stage for the family comedians at the rear of the lower level, a movie screening area, a serving table for frequent soiree’s, and cozy resilient furnishings. We infused style into this lower level changing the paint colors, adding new carpet to absorb sound and provide style. We also were sure to include color in the space strategically. Moss Garden: A Living Carpet of Tranquility
A moss garden is a serene, low-maintenance landscape feature that evokes a profound sense of calm and natural beauty. Composed of vibrant, velvety mosses that thrive in shaded, humid environments, these gardens offer a soft, carpet-like groundcover that replaces traditional lawns or gravel with rich, green texture.
At Westland Design, our moss gardens are thoughtfully integrated into the overall landscape to enhance a feeling of timelessness and stillness. Whether nestled beneath the canopy of trees, edging a stone pathway, or surrounding a tranquil water feature, moss brings subtle movement and color to quiet corners of the garden.
Key qualities of a moss garden include:
Evergreen softness: Moss provides lush, year-round greenery that requires no mowing or fertilizing.
Quiet beauty: It absorbs sound, contributing to a peaceful, contemplative environment.
Natural elegance: Ideal for Japanese-style gardens or woodland settings, moss complements stone, water, and wood elements with organic harmony.
A moss garden is more than a design choice—it’s an invitation to slow down, observe closely, and appreciate nature’s quiet elegance.

These clients love to entertain and host large parties, but their existing kitchen was just too small and outdated. They have a large family with two huge dogs, so we knew we had to create a layout to accommodate everyone. We wanted to open the back wall so that the kitchen could expand into a formal dining room that they rarely used.
We were able to remove the built-in pantry, open the back wall, and absorb the entire formal dining room, to create a massive, open, chef’s kitchen. We designed a large eat-in central island built around a 36” gas cooktop with a heavy-duty downdraft pop-up vent. We maximized the cabinetry storage and made the most of every cabinet with pull-out organizers, hands-free trash pull-out, roll-out trays, large pantry cabinets, and gorgeous backlit glass front cabinets. We also created a large stone front bar area complete with a bar sink, double beverage centers, and an ice maker. We added built-in bench seating in the breakfast nook, a custom built-in desk area to utilize the space under the stairs, and refaced the fireplace to match the stacked stone in the bar area.

The perfect paints for masonry are now available through Acme Brick. Visit https://brick.com/where-buy for your nearest Acme Brick Tile & Stone sales office for more information on Romabio products.
Romabio offers both limewash and masonry paint for those that want to change the look of their brickwork.
Classico Limewash creates that charming old world feel with a freshly painted look, but because some of the brick remains exposed, the warmth and quality endues. All it takes is a single coat for absorbent, unpainted brick, stone or other masonry, with no primer needed. Specially formulated to be easily manipulated in the first 5 days of application, you can test the product and see the results with no risk. Once it calcifies to the surface, it is breathable and will not seal the brick or stone, ensuring that it doesn’t peel, chip, or flake off.
BioDomus I & II are mineral based, breathable paints that will not seal the masonry surface. Unlike acrylic or latex, they will not peel, chip, or flake off. Both BioDomus I and BioDomus II are high performing paints that are inherently the same except for the finish they create. BioDomus I produces a flat finish, and BioDomus II has a slight aggregate in it to create a textured look on smooth brick, or a smoother finish on a rough surface. Color possibilities are almost unlimited as you can math other color palettes or choose from over 200 colors in the Romabio color deck. With a high UV resistance, a breathable wall, and a 20 year warranty, the performance of these products is made to last.

This project started as a kitchen remodel but evolved into a partial redesign and home refresh. Both interiors and exteriors were reimagined to update this traditional Spanish home into a transitional retreat.
The common area floorplan was redesigned to absorb the previously underutilized formal spaces into everyday areas. A large walk-in pantry was added while the kitchen flows from the family room to the dining area, with sightlines from the front and back of the home.
Architectural elements such as ceiling details and the central staircase were redesigned to fit the home's original character while still feeling updated. The bedrooms and bathrooms were revitalized upstairs with all-new finishes, making the entire home feel fresh and new.
An overall neutral color scheme means this home will remain timeless and continue to serve this family for years to come. Simple elegance defines this home. It's the perfect mix of subtle details, ornate craftsmanship, and contemporary elegance.

I made it more inviting by adding floor tiles, an outdoor rug and outdoor furniture in white, so as not to absorb the sun.

This photo was taken when it finally rained. The swale will catch the water and slow it down to be absorbed into the water table. This garden has little supplemental irrigation.

Cork flooring has many characteristics that make it one of the best flooring for bedrooms out there. Within its cellular structure, cork is constructed of millions upon millions of air-trapped cells which provides the natural shock absorbing properties found in a cork floor. The softness or ‘give’ of the flooring provides comfort for your feet. This type of flooring provides support for feet and joints, causing less stress and strain. You get comfort and functionality.

This colorful room was created for a young man to have a space to study, play games, music, and entertain his friends. The LED lighting changes color and has pre-programmed patterns. The coffee table is also a refrigerator and charging station. The computer workstation is also a charging station. the stripes of the banded black shade mimic the stripe of the area rug.

This chimney was cracked, loose and crumbling, from the top down, 30 courses. It looks like the crown was built
with 12”x16” flue tiles when they should be 16” x 16”.
The condition is due to saturation decay. When a chimney crown does not have a proper chimney cap to direct
all water away, slowly, over time, moisture absorbs into the chimney. Then freezing temperatures cause an
expansion and contraction that break the mortar joints and brick. This chimney was leaking into the home.
We rebuilt the chimney using new old town red brick and specialty sourced tan Belden brick to re create the unique pattern. We then tuck-pointed the chimney from the rebuild line down to the ground 100%. Finally we installed a proper custom stainless steel chimney cap and applied a water seal treatment.

RediRoot BREATHE is a decorative air-pruning planter. Made for home gardeners and houseplant lovers the 360-degree aeration and drainage provided by BREATHE helps deliver beneficial oxygen to plants and allows for even drying. As a plant grows up in BREATHE the roots will be air-pruned as they come in contact with light and air. This action reduces circling roots and signals the plant to grow more lateral roots, increasing the plants' ability to absorb water and nutrients more efficiently. Email grow@rediroot.com or call 800-654-2116 for more information.

This is a vertical garden wall installation in a shaded location. The plants are growing in pockets made of a horticulture fabric made entirely from recycled, non-toxic plastics which will last a lifetime. The automatic drip irrigation system delivers water to the top row of plants. The water is absorbed by the fabric, and then drips down through the entire wall, hydrating all the plants evenly on an adjustable schedule. The fabric is designed to hold and release moisture. As the plants continue to grow, the fabric will become less and less visible, until entirely hidden, resulting in a solid wall of attractive plants.
