Color 3D renderings were created to portray what the space would look like so Mike and Michelle could visualize the space in advance. Detailed trim and crown moldings grace the built in buffet and wet bar making for an amazingly functional space that lacks nothing in style and visual interest. Cherry wood cabinetry by Dura Supreme is featured in the space with a “Cocoa Brown” finish and includes beautiful mirrored glass doors embellished with unique elliptical mullion details. A built-in microwave, dishwasher and mini fridge add practicality to the ample entertainment mecca. An under mounted sink finishes the space joined with a intricate mosaic tile backsplash and “Ventisca Polished” quartz countertops. The basement is absolutely perfect for hosting friends and family with expertly designed key areas such as a game space for the kids, a movie area for the family, an ample workout room with luxurious full bath, and even built in wine storage. The family absolutely loves the new basement living space, and has already enjoyed numerous family movie nights and sleep-overs with friends. While custom cabinets made by Dura Supreme were used to create unique spaces that lived up to Mike and Michelle’s expectations., heated flooring under the 16”x16” “Mongolian Spring” tile was installed giving all tiled areas of the basement a much cozier feel, eliminating that cold hard surface most of us hate in our basements! The new basement must-have requirement list included a new bath space, which was incorporated adjacent to the work out room. The sleek shower door and cabinets in the new bathroom make guests and family feel like they are in an elegant hotel. The new guest bath features 4”x36” “Silver Screen” honed marble tile in a brick pattern on the shower walls and 2”x2” “Chenille” limestone tile in a hexagon mosaic pattern on the shower floor. “I came in with very specific requirements for our three project areas,” Michelle says. “There was not one time that I felt like I was asking for something that was not going to turn out how I anticipated.” Tying in multiple rooms during a renovation if you have can do it makes a lot of sense and saves money in the long run. A fully functional laundry room as well was a must on this family’s wish list. Michelle wanted to add space to the existing cramped and awkward laundry room, and Mike wanted to make sure they could still park a car in the garage. Reconfiguring interior walls required borrowing unused space cleverly from the garage in order to enlarge the laundry room space. Drawers under the stairs added beautiful hidden storage created almost magically out of dead space. White painted Dura Supreme cabinets bring additional light into the small space; while the 16”x16” cleft slate tile flooring provides excellent contrast and the naturally earthy feel Michelle wanted. we wanted to preserve the mid-century modern feel (talk about a real flashback!), and boy, do we love the results! This kitchen is another perfect example of a project where we did the “lipstick and make-up” – another term for replacing the more cosmetic features such as countertops, backsplash, and the door and drawer fronts. Even doing so, the resulting kitchen leaves us with a breath of fresh air! To learn more about this space, continue reading below: Cabinetry To start, we removed the soffit in the kitchen making the space look taller. Next, we did not rip out the cabinetry boxes, because we were inspired by the finish and look of what existed. Maintaining the finish of the cabinets helped preserve the retro feel and is a good example of repurposing what you already have! As a result, we replaced the door and drawer fronts with a new slab style in a matching medium stain. In addition to the cabinetry fronts, we installed floating shelves – a perfect spot to display! Countertops For countertops we wanted something light and bright, and also something that would look good with the other finishes. As a result, we kept it simple with a light and bright surface from Caesarstone in the color “Blizzard” Backsplash Now for a little fun and a pop of color, the tile. The tile we selected is fresh, exciting, and also ties everything together giving that mid-century modern feel. In a brick-lay installation, we have a Glazzio Crystile Series, in a 4×12 size, with a finish of Soft Mint. Fixtures and Fittings Completing the space, we finished the cabinetry with U-Turn knob’s on the doors, and U-turn pulls on the drawers. Then from Blanco, we have a Quatrus stainless steel sink and a Culina mini faucet in satin nickel.

Our client had been living in her beautiful lakeside retreat for about 3 years. All around were stunning views of the lake and mountains, but the view from inside was minimal. It felt dark and closed off from the gorgeous waterfront mere feet away. She desired a bigger kitchen, natural light, and a contemporary look. Referred to JRP by a subcontractor our client walked into the showroom one day, took one look at the modern kitchen in our design center, and was inspired! After talking about the frustrations of dark spaces and limitations when entertaining groups of friends, the homeowner and the JRP design team emerged with a new vision. Two walls between the living room and kitchen would be eliminated and structural revisions were needed for a common wall shared a wall with a neighbor. With the wall removals and the addition of multiple slider doors, the main level now has an open layout. Everything in the home went from dark to luminous as sunlight could now bounce off white walls to illuminate both spaces. Our aim was to create a beautiful modern kitchen which fused the necessities of a functional space with the elegant form of the contemporary aesthetic. The kitchen playfully mixes frameless white upper with horizontal grain oak lower cabinets and a fun diagonal white tile backsplash. Gorgeous grey Cambria quartz with white veining meets them both in the middle. The large island with integrated barstool area makes it functional and a great entertaining space. The master bedroom received a mini facelift as well. White never fails to give your bedroom a timeless look. The beautiful, bright marble shower shows what's possible when mixing tile shape, size, and color. The marble mosaic tiles in the shower pan are especially bold paired with black matte plumbing fixtures and gives the shower a striking visual. Taragano Design & Build completed this great room addition in Walnut Creek, California. The addition sits between the two existing wings at the rear of the house, filling what had been an open gap where the two roof lines came together. Building into that void rather than extending outward kept the footprint compact and gave the new room exterior walls on only one side, which is what made the full height glass possible. That roof junction was the structural problem. Two gables meeting a new flat roofed volume creates a valley condition that has to shed water in two directions, and the connection to both existing structures had to be detailed so nothing telegraphs at the seam through the first wet season. The parapet was carried above the adjacent ridge lines so the new roof drains clear of both, rather than tucking under them where debris collects. The glass wall faces the pool and slides fully open. At that opening width the header carries meaningful load across an unsupported span, which is a structural engineering question answered during design rather than a door selection made at the end. The room was oriented to the rear yard for a specific reason. Placing it here meant the rooms it connects to on either side kept their own windows, so nothing in the existing house became an interior space without daylight. Our client contacted us regarding the fireplace he was building in his new home. He decided to be a general contractor and build his house himself, he bought blue prints over the internet. However after framing the home he realized that his fireplace in the main portion of the house was out of proportion . He wanted this fireplace to be the focal point of his home. Client’s Desires: • Larger Fireplace • Wall of Stone • Large Mantel proportion to the size of the fireplace When we first meet our client at his new home, the framing of the fireplace was approx. 6 feet wide and 18 ft. high. After talking to him, we both felt that the fireplace needed to be a lot larger to give that dramatic look, he was looking for. We also suggested, because the wall wrapped into the kitchen that he should have a two sided fireplace with the other side facing his kitchen. We started by re-framing the fireplace to 12.5 feet wide, because of the size we enlarged the insert to 48" opening. We realized when ordering the stone for the fireplace that the weight of the stone was going to be very heavy. When looking at the framing of the house, we got an structural engineer involved to determine the stone weight and beams in the home and that the wall was not a load bearing wall. It was determined that we had to add an additional 6 LVL beams between the two load barring steel beams, to support the weight of the stone. The stone is a 70/30 mix to give it a more rustic look, we wrapped the stone around the wall into the kitchen to give it a beefy look. We had two custom mantels made, the living room mantel is made of alder wood and is 8.5 feet long with a two tier step with custom corbels. The homeowner chose a distress look. The kitchen mantel is more elegant with custom molding to match their kitchen cabinets.

Client’s Desires: • Larger Fireplace • Wall of Stone • Large Mantel proportion to the size of the fireplace When we first meet our client at his new home, the framing of the fireplace was approx. 6 feet wide and 18 ft. high. After talking to him, we both felt that the fireplace needed to be a lot larger to give that dramatic look, he was looking for. We also suggested, because the wall wrapped into the kitchen that he should have a two sided fireplace with the other side facing his kitchen. We started by re-framing the fireplace to 12.5 feet wide, because of the size we enlarged the insert to 48" opening. We realized when ordering the stone for the fireplace that the weight of the stone was going to be very heavy. When looking at the framing of the house, we got an structural engineer involved to determine the stone weight and beams in the home and that the wall was not a load bearing wall. It was determined that we had to add an additional 6 LVL beams between the two load barring steel beams, to support the weight of the stone. The stone is a 70/30 mix to give it a more rustic look, we wrapped the stone around the wall into the kitchen to give it a beefy look. We had two custom mantels made, the living room mantel is made of alder wood and is 8.5 feet long with a two tier step with custom corbels. The homeowner chose a distress look. The kitchen mantel is more elegant with custom molding to match their kitchen cabinets.

Our game plan going in was to use both modern and traditional elements, blending together eclectic patterns and textures, to create a visually layered room. One of the first decisions we made was to divide the room into four quadrants. Why? Two reasons. First, usability. In a big open room filled with long tables, there is no way to create a defined space for conferences, group meetings, or casual conversation. With the room pieced into sections, the areas for talking are more intimate, and the sofas and chairs are triangulated in a way that facilitates conversation. Additionally, you can have four separate meetings or conversations occurring simultaneously without one group disrupting another, so it’s just practical. The second reason for the quadrants was design cohesion. It’s difficult to construct an eclectic look in a large room that is also cohesive. But by breaking the room up, we were able to design four parts that each have their own tone and personality, and then each of the four sections play off one another to work as a unified whole.

The tiered perennial and annual beds were meticulously designed to look soft, rich, and full without being messy. The stripes of color and confetti of blooms is truly an amazing sight to behold and sets off the richness of the green lawn in between.

For this project the house itself and the garage are the only original features on the property. In the front yard we created massive curb appeal by adding a new brick driveway, framed by lighted brick columns, with an offset parking space. A brick retaining wall and walkway lead visitors to the front door, while a low brick wall and crisp white pergola enhance a previous underutilized patio. Landscaping, sod, and lighting frame the house without distracting from its character. In the back yard the driveway leads to an updated garage which received a new brick floor and air conditioning. The back of the house changed drastically with the seamless addition of a covered patio framed on one side by a trellis with inset stained glass opposite a brick fireplace. The live-edge cypress mantel provides the perfect place for decor. The travertine patio steps down to a rectangular pool, which features a swim jet and linear glass waterline tile.
