Inspiration for a large timeless backyard concrete paver and rectangular pool fountain remodel in Richmond

Craig Bergmann Landscape Design was commissioned to design a garden for an avid collector of fine Asian antiquities. Nestled among a woodland setting, the garden was created to complement an array of fine sculpture and relics. A plant palette primarily composed of shade loving perennials and shrubs, plants were chosen to be reminiscent of Asian flora.

This Paradise Valley modern estate was selected Arizona Foothills Magazine's Showcase Home in 2004. The home backs to a preserve and fronts to a majestic Paradise Valley skyline. Architect CP Drewett designed all interior millwork, specifying exotic veneers to counter the other interior finishes making this a sumptuous feast of pattern and texture. The home is organized along a sweeping interior curve and concludes in a collection of destination type spaces that are each meticulously crafted. The warmth of materials and attention to detail made this showcase home a success to those with traditional tastes as well as a favorite for those favoring a more contemporary aesthetic. This modern outdoor kitchen and dining area is a perfect blend of style and function. The cantilevered grill station, featuring a stainless steel gas natural gas grill and a Big Green Egg, is framed by a contemporary pergola with steel and Douglas Fir wood beams, creating an open yet defined space for cooking and entertaining. The floating countertops provide ample workspace for food prep, while the natural elements, like the wooden slats and the surrounding greenery, blend the structure seamlessly with the outdoor environment.
Beneath the pergola, a long steel and stone dining table with minimalist chairs invites guests to enjoy al fresco meals. With its clean lines, functional design, and modern aesthetic, this outdoor kitchen is ideal for those who enjoy outdoor dining and entertaining in style.

1929 Spanish Colonial home; this master bath renovation started with a new alcove shower on the 2nd floor of the home, situated in the historic district of Cocoa Village in Brevard County, Florida. The clients wanted to respect the architectural style of their home without creating a period reproduction. Honed & tumbled travertine tiles in multiple sizes were employed with a decorative border produced by Stone Impressions of San Diego, CA. Travertine tile sizes include: 12x12, 6x6 and 4x8. The border is composed of 6x6 and 3x6 travertine. Grohe plumbing fixtures from Aquadraulics in Rockledge, Florida.

When this young couple bought their dream home, their dream kitchen seemed completely out of reach. With only minor updates to the floor plan but major updates to the finishes, the kitchen was transformed into a sleek and modern space that the whole family could enjoy. High contrast finishes feel crisp and fresh, uncluttered and composed, creating calmness and ease for an otherwise busy family.

The great room's beach house kitchen is composed of white shaker cabinets, oil rubbed bronze hardware, and stainless steel appliances. The quartz counter top is a mix of gray, cream, and brown speckles reminicent of a sandy shoreline. The use of clear glass pendants above the kitchen island make the space feel light and clean. The designer used turquoise accents in the napkins and place mats to add a pop of color.

The original design of this late Mid-century Modern house featured a horrifically ugly entry which the owners needed our help to fix. In addition, they wanted to add a master suite, create a home theatre, and remodel the family room. Although they originally considered adding a second floor, our final design resulted in an extension of the house which accentuated its existing linear quality. Our solution to the entry problem included cutting back part of the vaulted roof to allow more light in and adding a cantilevered canopy instead. A new entry bridge crosses a koi pond, and new clerestory windows, stone planters and cedar trim complete the makeover of the previously bland plywood-clad box. The new master suite features 12 foot ceilings, clerestory windows, 8 foot high French doors and a fireplace. The exterior of the addition employs the same pallet of materials as the new façade but with a carefully composed composition of form and proportion. The new family room features the same stone cladding as we used on the exterior.

THE CHALLENGE: Transform an outdated and compartmentalized 1950’s era home into an open, light filled, modern residence fit for a young and growing family.
THE SOLUTION: Juxtaposition was the name of the game. Dark floors contrast light walls; small spaces are enlarged by clean layouts; soft textures balance hard surfaces. Balanced opposites create a composed, family friendly residence.

This newly constructed home was in need of an outdoor living space and streetscape in a matching contemporary Northwest style. Our studio composed a landscape with an improved entry sequence, balancing the need for personal privacy alongside a distinctive public face. A courtyard oasis with a new deck is enclosed by warm wooden fencing set on top of the contrasting raw texture of a gabion retaining wall that acts as a backdrop to bold streetscape plantings.

Limestone steps and terraces float through the gardens drawing the visitor into the landscape. A gradual approach to the house softens the steep site and strengthens the connection of the house to the street and neighbourhood. The planting, composed of a colour palette of pale blues and silvers, displays varying textures of grasses, bold architectural perennials, and the soft silvery mounds of the Lamb’s Ear that contrast beautifully against the clean lines of the steps and terraces. The back garden showcases a generous limestone terrace that blurs the lines between house and garden and an intimate dining area settled into the Oak trees. Viewed from many vantage points throughout the house, a grove of serviceberries at the back of the garden, nestled in a matrix planting of ferns and native groundcovers, provides a contemporary nod to the ravine setting and a dynamic seasonal backdrop.
