La Nordica Mamy wood cook stove in a family room. This is where the fireplace used to be, hence an easy chimney connection. Non-combustible brick walls on all sides mean that the cook stove can be installed in a zero-clearance fashion!

Before renovating, this bright and airy family kitchen was small, cramped and dark. The dining room was being used for spillover storage, and there was hardly room for two cooks in the kitchen. By knocking out the wall separating the two rooms, we created a large kitchen space with plenty of storage, space for cooking and baking, and a gathering table for kids and family friends. The dark navy blue cabinets set apart the area for baking, with a deep, bright counter for cooling racks, a tiled niche for the mixer, and pantries dedicated to baking supplies. The space next to the beverage center was used to create a beautiful eat-in dining area with an over-sized pendant and provided a stunning focal point visible from the front entry. Touches of brass and iron are sprinkled throughout and tie the entire room together.

The designer's own kitchen was gutted and renovated in 2017, with a focus on classic materials and thoughtful storage. The 1920s craftsman home has been in the family since 1940, and every effort was made to keep finishes and details true to the original construction. Inspiration for a large timeless dark wood floor bedroom remodel in Philadelphia with gray walls
Inspiration for a large timeless dark wood floor bedroom remodel in Philadelphia with gray walls

This expansive Victorian had tremendous historic charm but hadn’t seen a kitchen renovation since the 1950s. The homeowners wanted to take advantage of their views of the backyard and raised the roof and pushed the kitchen into the back of the house, where expansive windows could allow southern light into the kitchen all day. A warm historic gray/beige was chosen for the cabinetry, which was contrasted with character oak cabinetry on the appliance wall and bar in a modern chevron detail. The cooking area and prep area adjoin the open eating area. A 3x6 Carrara marble subway tile wall provides a cost-effective and dramatic backdrop for the space.

Rosa Maiolica wood cook stove in a living room with wooden interior.
Even though fire may not be wood's best friend with sufficient protection a wood cook stove can be installed anywhere. Note the hearth pad protecting the floor from ambers falling out of the firebox, this is a a must.

The screened, open plan kitchen and media room offer space for family and friends to gather while delicious meals are prepared using the Fire Magic grill and Big Green Egg ceramic charcoal grill; drinks are kept cool in the refrigerator by Perlick. Plenty of room for everyone to comfortably relax on the sectional sofa by Patio Renaissance. The tile backsplash mirrors the fireplace’s brick face, providing visual continuity across the outdoor spaces.
