The Architect House is located on a breathtaking five-acre property in Great Falls, VA. This modern home was designed to shape itself into the site and landscape. By doing so each indoor space individually responds to the corresponding outdoor space. The entire house is then able to knit itself together with spaces that freely flow together from inside and out. The orientation of the house allows sunlight to tell the time of the day while you are inside. Upon entering you see straight through a central atrium and into the landscape beyond. Natural light and views of nature are captured from every angle inside the home. The modern exterior design of the house utilizes a linear brick at the base of the house that anchors it to the land. Gray and cedar colored modern architectural panel siding alternate patterns on all facades of the house, accentuating the different volumes. These volumes are then capped off by low sloping metal panel roofs. Exposed steel beans and columns are utilized to create long spans of covered outdoor spaces that then easily recede into the backdrop of the landscape. The design of this modern home is in harmony with the site and landscape creating a warm welcoming feeling and one that conveys that the house belongs there.

Our client’s charming cottage was no longer meeting the needs of their family. We needed to give them more space but not lose the quaint characteristics that make this little historic home so unique. So we didn’t go up, and we didn’t go wide, instead we took this master suite addition straight out into the backyard and maintained 100% of the original historic façade. Master Suite This master suite is truly a private retreat. We were able to create a variety of zones in this suite to allow room for a good night’s sleep, reading by a roaring fire, or catching up on correspondence. The fireplace became the real focal point in this suite. Wrapped in herringbone whitewashed wood planks and accented with a dark stone hearth and wood mantle, we can’t take our eyes off this beauty. With its own private deck and access to the backyard, there is really no reason to ever leave this little sanctuary. Master Bathroom The master bathroom meets all the homeowner’s modern needs but has plenty of cozy accents that make it feel right at home in the rest of the space. A natural wood vanity with a mixture of brass and bronze metals gives us the right amount of warmth, and contrasts beautifully with the off-white floor tile and its vintage hex shape. Now the shower is where we had a little fun, we introduced the soft matte blue/green tile with satin brass accents, and solid quartz floor (do you see those veins?!). And the commode room is where we had a lot fun, the leopard print wallpaper gives us all lux vibes (rawr!) and pairs just perfectly with the hex floor tile and vintage door hardware. Hall Bathroom We wanted the hall bathroom to drip with vintage charm as well but opted to play with a simpler color palette in this space. We utilized black and white tile with fun patterns (like the little boarder on the floor) and kept this room feeling crisp and bright.

Channel back chairs carry their own exclusive beauty, a swell enrichment to a room. Their unique shape both compliments and beautifies a simple space. A curvilinear fabric works well with the channeling, even brings the channels out more. The accompanying ottoman is also enhanced by the curvilinear fabric, repeated from the chair. The soft blue coordinates with the wall color, as well as integrate the multi-colored floral drapery and sham fabric. The sham contains a welt in yellow fabric to emphasize its own shape and accent the ruffles. A corresponding blue pin stripe dobby fabric is used on the sunburst pillow and its center button, with contrasting yellow welt to accentuate the sunburst’s shape. Altogether, the use of various shapes and patterns of the furniture, draperies and accessories all work together simultaneously to harmonize this bedroom.

For this newly referred client, we provided interior painting services at her Acton home. The stair railings and treads were primed and applied two finish coats of Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo paint in Dark Chocolate. The remaining balusters, risers and related stairway trim were painted with two coats of Regal Select Mountain Peak White. The corresponding front entrance and second floor hallways were prepped and painted to complete the stairway color transformation.

The monolithic island is outlined by fronts and tops made of one type of Pietra Grey marble. The uniform character of the furniture stands in stark contrast to irregular milled handles and a sink with a high edge integrated into the countertop. A massive form of the island corresponds with tall cabinets in the form of a light case. Only the central part of the furniture has full fronts with a new type of decorative cutters.

design: Carrie Preston (Studio TOOP) and Jasper Helmantel (Cruydt Hoeck), 2011 location: Appeltern, NL status: built in 2012 by Appeltern Model Garden Complex photos: Olga van Saane, October 2013 Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved. At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees. The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.

Complete reconstruction of family house was inspired by elegant French style. The city house decorated in mainly bright colours connects concrete with wood and industrial parts with furniture from all over the world. There were several major changes made during the reconstruction: The old staircase was repealed and there was created a new one, elegant, on a completely different place, which better corresponds with the central open space. In the lower part of the house there is a kitchen connected with a living room, so it resulted in a creation of one large living space, dominated by a new double-sided fireplace with a concrete trowel set in a load-bearing central support. Window covering were selected to correspond and compliment the existing cool, classic, contemporary decor. The drapery fabric selected was an organic linen with a beautiful silver shimmer.

This beautiful Vienna, VA needed a two-story addition on the existing home frame. Our expert team designed and built this major project with many new features. This remodel project includes three bedrooms, staircase, two full bathrooms, and closets including two walk-in closets. Plenty of storage space is included in each vanity along with plenty of lighting using sconce lights. Three carpeted bedrooms with corresponding closets. Master bedroom with his and hers walk-in closets, master bathroom with double vanity and standing shower and separate toilet room. Bathrooms includes hardwood flooring. Shared bathroom includes double vanity. New second floor includes carpet throughout second floor and staircase.

Wanting to ensure accessibility and functionality of their new home, the homeowners opted to include both a home elevator and dumbwaiter into their design. The elevator pairs fully automatic, sleek, stainless steel side sliding doors with anodized aluminum fixtures. Not only adding style but nearly “hands free” access to every level of the home. The cab’s interior was custom finished by the general contractor to match the home’s modern simplicity design. The floor-loading dumbwaiter allows for heavier items to be transported with more ease from the wine cellar to the main floor. The stainless-steel finish and corresponding fixtures tie in flawlessly with the elevator and the decor of the home. This Modern Marvel will make the perfect home for multigeneration living for years to come.

Craig & Chad are both professionals in the realm of design – fashion & detail. Our collaboration proved to be a fun challenge that resulted in a kitchen renovation with two bathrooms. Their main bathroom featured above makes great use of space with the addition of built in cabinetry, a wall niche, and storage beneath the sink. It also features a unique tile floor pattern from Centura with wood accents and herringbone patterns, which corresponds nicely with the black accents. Fixtures are beautifully made by Brizio by Jason Wu.
