Blending contemporary and historic styles requires innovative design and a well-balanced aesthetic. That was the challenge we faced in creating a modern kitchen for this historic home in Lynnfield, MA. The final design retained the classically beautiful spatial and structural elements of the home while introducing a sleek sophistication. We mixed the two design palettes carefully. For instance, juxtaposing the warm, distressed wood of an original door with the smooth, brightness of non-paneled, maple cabinetry. A cork floor and accent cabinets of white metal add texture while a seated, step-down peninsula and built in bookcase create an open transition from the kitchen proper to an inviting dining space. In this kitchen we removed the existing soffits and opened up the room by removing the peninsula and installed new Waypoint Living Spaces 630S door style, full overlay Maple cabinets with Cognac stain with crown molding up to the ceiling. Richilieu brushed nickel transitional metal pulls were installed on the cabinets. Wilsonart Bronzed Fusion laminate countertops were installed with a Blanco diamond equal bowl sink in biscuit color with Moen Arbor single handle pullout faucet in spot resistant stainless steel finish. The backsplash is 3x6 Rittehnhouse glazed wall tile in almond color installed in a subway pattern. On the floor is Permastone 16x16 groutfit tile in Indian Slate dune.

A dark stained maple island anchors the middle of this large kitchen with a unique layout. Glazed white cabinets on the perimeter with a dark stained paneled refrigerator and pantry. The paneled refrigerator and pantry are recessed into the wall so they take up less space visually and appear to be furniture looking.

This kitchen offers a harmonious blend of both the classic and farmhouse kitchen styles. The classic look of the white painted inset center panel doors with mitered edges with the dark quartz countertops and subway tile backsplash is offset by the farmhouse feel of the pecan finish large eat-in prep island with sink along with the farmhouse main sink. The finishes in this kitchen include: medium toned hardwood floors, glass accent doors, built-in plate rack, high-end stainless steel appliances, recessed, under-cabinet, and accent lighting.

Like most of our projects, we can't gush about this reno—a new kitchen and mudroom, ensuite closet and pantry—without gushing about the people who live there. The best projects, we always say, are the ones in which client, contractor and design team are all present throughout, conception to completion, each bringing their particular expertise to the table and forming a cohesive, trustworthy team that is mutually invested in a smooth and successful process. They listen to each other, give the benefit of the doubt to each other, do what they say they'll do. This project exemplified that kind of team, and it shows in the results. Most obvious is the opening up of the kitchen to the dining room, decompartmentalizing somewhat a century-old bungalow that was originally quite purposefully compartmentalized. As a result, the kitchen had to become a place one wanted to see clear through from the front door. Inset cabinets and carefully selected details make the functional heart of the house equal in elegance to the more "public" gathering spaces, with their craftsman depth and detail. An old back porch was converted to interior space, creating a mudroom and a much-needed ensuite walk-in closet. A new, larger deck went on: Phase One of an extensive design for outdoor living, that we all hope will be realized over the next few years. Finally, a duplicative back stairwell was repurposed into a walk-in pantry. Modernizing often means opening spaces up for more casual living and entertaining, and/or making better use of dead space. In this re-conceptualized old house, we did all of that, creating a back-of-the-house that is now bright and cheerful and new, while carefully incorporating meaningful vintage and personal elements. The best result of all: the clients are thrilled. And everyone who went in to the project came out of it friends. A daring combination of forms and finishes yielded an exciting contemporary/industrial hybrid. In a converted wedge-shaped factory building, this loft’s quirky shape was celebrated, not disguised. Contrasting flooring demarcates what is, in fact, a literal work triangle. The island’s unusual five-sided shape proudly reiterates the room’s footprint; the three waterfall ends accentuate its one-of-a-kind geometry. Four different materials were chosen to establish a playful dialogue between light, dark, and texture: caramel-stained rift cut oak on open cabinets; matte charcoal gray paint on tall and wall cabinets; brushed bronze oil-rubbed wire mesh inserts for bases; and panels in a laminate resembling knotty weathered wood. White quartz countertops provide a unifying feature. Open cabinets are singular for their asymmetrical placement and, in some spots, open-ended configuration within the tall units. The breathtaking dining table was fashioned from two free-form live edge planks, joined by a ribbon of clear epoxy resin, thus creating the illusion of a stream meandering through fallen trees. Black elements contribute an industrial edge: an open-framed metal wall shelf over the sink; iron table legs; a mix of dining chairs in mid-century wire mesh, molded plastic, and retro aluminum; and machinery castors on the low-slung coffee table. This laundry room was created by removing the existing bathroom and bedroom closet. Medallion Designer Series maple full overlay cabinet’s in the Potters Mill door style with Harbor Mist painted finish was installed. Formica Laminate Concrete Stone with a bull edge and single bowl Kurran undermount stainless steel sink with a chrome Moen faucet. Boulder Terra Linear Blend tile was used for the backsplash and washer outlet box cover. On the floor 12x24 Mediterranean Essence tile in Bronze finish was installed. A Bosch washer & dryer were also installed.
