Casual elegance perfectly describes this classic family home. Delicate touches of color, loads of crisp white and a little bit of luxury are what brings this home to life.

This couple wanted to get the most out of their small, suburban backyard by implementing an adult design separate from the kids' area, but within its view. Our team designed a courtyard-like feel to make the space feel larger and to provide easy access to the shed/office space. The delicate water feature and fire pit are the perfect elements to provide a resort feel.

The owners requested a Private Resort that catered to their love for entertaining friends and family, a place where 2 people would feel just as comfortable as 42. Located on the western edge of a Wisconsin lake, the site provides a range of natural ecosystems from forest to prairie to water, allowing the building to have a more complex relationship with the lake - not merely creating large unencumbered views in that direction. The gently sloping site to the lake is atypical in many ways to most lakeside lots - as its main trajectory is not directly to the lake views - allowing for focus to be pushed in other directions such as a courtyard and into a nearby forest. The biggest challenge was accommodating the large scale gathering spaces, while not overwhelming the natural setting with a single massive structure. Our solution was found in breaking down the scale of the project into digestible pieces and organizing them in a Camp-like collection of elements: - Main Lodge: Providing the proper entry to the Camp and a Mess Hall - Bunk House: A communal sleeping area and social space. - Party Barn: An entertainment facility that opens directly on to a swimming pool & outdoor room. - Guest Cottages: A series of smaller guest quarters. - Private Quarters: The owners private space that directly links to the Main Lodge. These elements are joined by a series green roof connectors, that merge with the landscape and allow the out buildings to retain their own identity. This Camp feel was further magnified through the materiality - specifically the use of Doug Fir, creating a modern Northwoods setting that is warm and inviting. The use of local limestone and poured concrete walls ground the buildings to the sloping site and serve as a cradle for the wood volumes that rest gently on them. The connections between these materials provided an opportunity to add a delicate reading to the spaces and re-enforce the camp aesthetic. The oscillation between large communal spaces and private, intimate zones is explored on the interior and in the outdoor rooms. From the large courtyard to the private balcony - accommodating a variety of opportunities to engage the landscape was at the heart of the concept. Asher’s seamless joinery and beautiful walnut or ash veneer are inspired by Danish traditional mid-century masterpieces. The delicately sculpted frame falls 45 degrees into the drawers creating a beautiful casing and intricate depth. Neatly tapered solid wood legs complete the look with handsome brushed copper detail. The Asher Night Stand is the perfect complement to the Asher bed frame, and completes the classic mid-century modern dream.

This room is a very pleasing mixture of contemporary, transitional and traditional pieces. The furniture has rather clean lines but the rich textures of the fabrics and gorgeous pattern of the area rug soften and add richness to the room. The crisp white floor to ceiling molding leaves open panels of wall that were painted in a camel color to add warmth. The corner chair with its delicate arabesque outlined pillow, oval end table with circle-based lamp and collages hung in picture boxed frames are just perfection.

The kitchen area is dramatically transformed to fit the needs of the owner―clean lines, open spaces, natural light, use of healthy materials and Energy Star rated appliances. FSC-certified, formaldehyde-free lumber is used throughout the house. Cabinets are carefully constructed to maintain the wood pattern of the walls and floors creating a unified look. MA Peterson www.mapeterson.com The true centerpiece of this project is the rift sawn oak, which we used for the custom cabinetry throughout as well as on the artisan hand-chipped, carved kitchen island. Compared to traditional plain and quarter-sawn styles, rift sawn wood is less common and simply put, exquisite. The milling is done perpendicular to growth rings, producing a grain pattern with no flecking, a unique linear look, and impressive dimensional stability. The delicate, complementary tones of the oak floor pull everything together in a quiet harmony, and slate backsplash adds its own brand of dimensional interest and beauty. Accommodating the owner's desire for premier details, we also designed a custom steel hood for the cooktop and carefully selected fine quality dining stools to accompany the center island.

This Orchid House Conservatory is perched on a deck overlooking a manicured yard. Entry to the room is directly from the first floor kitchen so it is an easily accessible and thus frequently used space. Just what the owners wanted.
