A great customer re-designs a room we did years ago

Amy is a great customer. And, my friend (and advocate) too! She is a longtime client of mine. Years ago we designed her living room – but she was ready to add some freshness and excitement to the things she already loved about her room. We kept some elements: the beautiful cocktail table and etagere. The art she had was working well. We added new furniture, window treatments, an area rug & lighting. She chose the Melanie sofa with it’s deeply tufted back and English arms. Then we added an Asher chair and put a bit of surprise in the room by covering it with a contemporary fabric. The geometric designs in the area rug and draperies in a citron color also added a right-now feel to the room. Woven grass lamp shades add a nice texture

We combined dark and light wood elements in the furniture, with wood effect vinyl flooring, allowing for the warmth of material, to be juxtiposed with ceramic, stone, glass and metal - trademarks of Contemporary Design. The counter stools are Bess by Camerich, upholstered with durable Navy Blue Crypton fabric and natural wood legs. This new home build project on Shawna Way is one of the nearest and dearest to Versa. These clients were ready to enjoy their retirement with a growing family of grandchildren but needed their current space to accommodate their changing lifestyle landscape. With much excitement the existing home was demolished before their eyes to make way for their custom dream home. Incorporating mostly traditional elements with a few modern touches they were able to create a stunning and inviting dwelling for their family to enjoy together for many years to come.

All the classic elements of a well appointed home. No detail was overlooked in this amazing custom kitchen. Beautiful travertine floors done in a herringbone pattern. Hand carved corbels and medallion carvings are placed to add a more ornate detail to the open shelf units and stove wall. Mixing materials to keep the design exciting, we used marble and brick to dress the fire place wall and added a built in mahogany surround. Custom furnishing and window treatments play a big part in the home. Florals, paisleys , plaids and chenilles in warm browns, beiges and eggplant add elegance to every room.

Excitement and unique elements make for this special kitchen design. Using shape to create a space that is pleasant to the eye yet functional for the homeowner. Natural lighting, bright paint colours and beautiful backsplash all come together in creating a bold appeal. Traditional cabinetry, mouldings and hardware make for a unique spin on a traditional style. Accents, seating and décor help implement just how beautifully this space is laid out. Having to create such a striking kitchen, yet considering the everyday use for the space is a challenge to all. This kitchen would make anyone never want to step away from their sink. While entertaining, having a separation between dining and prepping is important to many everyday hosts. This design is one to stand the test of time.

Mauk Cabinets by Design

Once again, we have had the pleasure of working with this outstanding builder on another project. Aaron Mauk not only designed but supplied and installed all the cabinetry in this new home which definitely utilizes an "open" design concept throughout. Unique lighting elements are found in every room which keeps every space fun and exciting. The kitchen uses grey tones to create a cool, clean environment that showcases the breathtaking ceilings. Most of the cabinetry in the house is shown in Marsh’s “Graphite” stain on maple wood, which is a beautiful way of tying the whole home together. This home is not only beautiful, but it is functional as well. The pull down closet rods found in the laundry room extend over the washer and dryer so it can be used when needed, but easily stored out of the way when not in use. A happy east coast family gets their perfect second home on the west coast. This family of 6 was a true joy to work with from start to finish. They were very excited to have a home reflecting the true west coast sensibility: ocean tones mixed with neutrals, modern art and playful elements, and of course durability and comfort for all the kids and guests. The pool area and kitchen got total overhauls (thanks to Jeff with Black Cat Construction) and we added a fun wine closet below the staircase. They trusted the vision of the design and made few requests for changes. And the end result was even better than they expected.

Eclectic Contemporary Master Bath

Revealing Redesign

This project was exciting from the start--a contemporary 80's house that still had its original master bathroom, with all of its intense peach color, powder blue formica counters, grainy oak cabinetry, and miles of linoleum floors....so much potential! The original bathroom was long, low-ceilinged, and narrow, with a single tall window at the far end. Knowing that the adjacent space was a walk-in closet featuring the same type of window, and that the room was in the front gable of the house, my hope was that we could gain vertical and horizontal space by removing the wall separating the two rooms, and also vault the ceiling.... We did just that, and now with a vaulted ceiling and expanded footprint, the bathroom has a luxurious and relaxing feel, just as my clients had wanted. With the gable end wall highlighted with clear cedar planks (further accenting its vertical lines and feeling so at home in the house's wooded setting), a beautiful limestone floor, a Mid-Century styled ceiling fixture, and an antique botanical print framed especially for the space-- the marriage of traditional and contemporary elements into a funky, eclectic mix, reflects the style of the house and its occupants. The pinky peach and cramped footprint of this bathroom is now a distant memory, and a lovely, serene space now has taken its place. Photos by Laura Kicey

We loved this project! The transformation was incredible. Our client came to us asking for a master bedroom that created a space for them to retreat to at the end of a very busy day. They moved into this beautiful estate overlooking a Connecticut vineyard that yearned for a design to compliment the architecture of the home, yet personalize the transitional taste of this young couple. We wanted to bring them elements that included clean lines with some updated tradition. Gray has been the new neutral in design lately but to set it aside from the typical use of this hue, a favorite by many today, we added a touch of gold for warmth and elegance. The client's desire for a place to read and relax allowed for a seating area where they can transition to a doorway that leads them out to a beautiful stone veranda. We are excited as they are able to enjoy the start of a beautiful home redesign with a space that starts and ends their day in understated luxury. Custom designed by Hartley and Hill Design. A showstopping large wooden built-in is the focal point, which brings attention to its antique style and classic aesthetic.
