Gallegos was contacted by a client about a project where stone was not just to be an accent material, but the main visual and perceived structural element to create a timeless architectural composition. To further the endeavor: all veneers and dimension stone must be locally sourced and sustainably quarried. The design called for a moss rock veneer with cut stone trim. Sourcing the sandstone moss rock was simple because there were several local quarries to use. The problem was with the trim pieces. Gallegos selected Colorado Buff sandstone for the trim since the buff body was a good contrast to the moss rock and it is a stone that can be cut to size. One main concern with any sedimentary stone is hitting what is known as a “dry” layer in the ledge. This is an area in the stone between sedimentary layers that has not solidified or cemented. It is still granular and can lead to future stone failure as water penetrates these layers and creates freeze/thaw issues. To avoid this, they used an epoxy injected into the dry layers to help solidify the material and prevent any future failures. The client also wanted sustainable materials for their countertops and bathrooms. Many of the interior stones were either reclaimed materials or were sourced from Colorado quarries – Calacatta Lincoln was used extensively. Gallegos sourced tiles from reclamation projects in Europe and Asia for use in the master bath and front entry areas. For many of the countertops, the owner’s interior designer spent hours looking through remnants and applied several throughout the residence. Willow Court is a spectacular and dramatic nod to stone masonry, something the owner, architect, and builder can be proud of and, for the most part, was built with the environment in mind.

Starting its life as a dark, walled in space with inadequate cabinetry and multiple awkward components, I knew the only way forward with this penthouse kitchen, was for it to undergo a complete rebuild. The clients were hoping to welcome a child in the years following this renovation, however they love to entertain so also wanted a modern and sophisticated kitchen. Therefore, the task became marrying functional indestructibility with clean, elevated design, resulting in a timeless, architecturally forward kitchen with sensible storage and innovated finishes. The first and most important task when addressing the modernization of this kitchen, was to remove the existing walls that closed off the space. Accomplishing this allowed for a more free-flowing feel and opened the sightline to the rest of the unit. This also invited the opportunity for a new, more welcoming floor plan including the addition of a large island with ample counter space and optional eat-in functionality. In order to maximize functional efficiency and overall aesthetic value, I knew the plumbing required substantial relocation. However, with concrete ceilings and floors, combined with a strata unwilling to allow trenching of the slab, moving the plumbing to the most effective location was no easy feat. Ultimately, I was able to accomplish this by creating a hidden channel inside the cabinetry that allowed the plumbing to be redirected to the ideal location without visible detection. Creatively, I was inspired by the idea of injecting dimension, by way of juxtaposing materials that wouldn’t necessarily be found together in nature, yet worked harmonious when combined. You’ll notice the cabinet fronts are all made of solid Dekton – a manmade stone that while costly, is nearly indestructible. This created the base in which we inset the countertop, backsplash and surround, all made in a wood-like material. As if a huge ice-cream scoop glided into a slab of solid stone, uncovering beautiful layered depths of wood. I worked with a local company to custom manufacture this is a high impact, one-of-a-kind laminate specifically for this project. It’s nonporous, fingerprint resistant and antimicrobial. It offers a matte finish which has a beautiful hand-feel resembling real wood but because it’s manmade, it’s not subjected to the same expansion and contraction of natural wood, making it an exceptional choice for this application. Final details also include a touchless kitchen faucet, integrated appliances, hidden storage, Italian lighting, delicate Australian hardware and smart switches and plugs.

Game On is a lower level entertainment space designed for a large family. We focused on casual comfort with an injection of spunk for a lounge-like environment filled with fun and function. Architectural interest was added with our custom feature wall of herringbone wood paneling, wrapped beams and navy grasscloth lined bookshelves flanking an Ann Sacks marble mosaic fireplace surround. Blues and greens were contrasted with stark black and white. A touch of modern conversation, dining, game playing, and media lounge zones allow for a crowd to mingle with ease. With a walk out covered terrace, full kitchen, and blackout drapery for movie night, why leave home?

Only the chicest of modern touches for this detached home in Tornto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood. Textures like exposed beams and geometric wild tiles give this home cool-kid elevation. The front of the house is reimagined with a fresh, new facade with a reimagined front porch and entrance. Inside, the tiled entry foyer cuts a stylish swath down the hall and up into the back of the powder room. The ground floor opens onto a cozy built-in banquette with a wood ceiling that wraps down one wall, adding warmth and richness to a clean interior. A clean white kitchen with a subtle geometric backsplash is located in the heart of the home, with large windows in the side wall that inject light deep into the middle of the house. Another standout is the custom lasercut screen features a pattern inspired by the kitchen backsplash tile. Through the upstairs corridor, a selection of the original ceiling joists are retained and exposed. A custom made barn door that repurposes scraps of reclaimed wood makes a bold statement on the 2nd floor, enclosing a small den space off the multi-use corridor, and in the basement, a custom built in shelving unit uses rough, reclaimed wood. The rear yard provides a more secluded outdoor space for family gatherings, and the new porch provides a generous urban room for sitting outdoors. A cedar slatted wall provides privacy and a backrest.

Ideally, an ensuite bathroom is a luxurious extension of your bedroom – but for these clients, the space felt dated. We relocated all the fixtures. These changes allowed us to add a larger vanity, a tall linen storage cabinet, and a doubled-in-size make-up area (which the client dubbed “her new favourite seat in the house”). Large vintage-inspired tiles, floating rustic shelves, and sleek grey cabinets inject style; a steam shower and modern fixtures add another layer of luxe.

Our clients fell in love with this expansive modern home and collaborated with us to inject their personalities and add function to meet their lifestyle. Original artwork collected during their travels inspired much of the interior palette, and we looked to vibrant patterned fabrics, bold accents and gorgeous floral wallpapers to boost the personality of the spaces. In the great room, we added color with a bold wool area rug and accent pillows, and the pair of swivel chairs in the window invites leisurely time taking in the sweeping views. The richly textured dining room has its own personality with brick-clad walls and an unapologetically stylish sputnik chandelier. The primary bedroom is wrapped in soft, modern floral wallpaper that inspired the palette of the bespoke furnishings and luxurious bedding. Rich upholstery and supple leather adorn pieces customized for the space. The home’s key entertaining space is the ground level bar and lounge which boasts a custom handcrafted wine wall by Sommi Wine Cellars. Furnishings with colorful patterns and unique shapes are everywhere, inviting lively gatherings and conversation. The hobby room invites the couple to get creative together and serves as a multi-purpose getaway. The guest room repurposed the couple’s existing bedroom furniture and area rug, and we pulled it all together with new artwork, lamps and bedding to create an inviting space for guests. This solution would involve a multi-layered treatment process: Ultrafiltration (UF) was the first stage to remove the suspended solids and colloids in order to protect the downstream processes from fouling. RO was thus used to bring down the TDS considerably and provide a permeate stream suitable for re-use into the field’s operations. MEEs were installed for the RO concentrate treatment step, further decreasing the volume of brine and recovering more water for re-use. The system developed by Waterman Engineers Australia led to a significant reduction in scaling and corrosion problems, extended the life expectancy of the field’s infrastructure, and facilitated the re-injection of treated water that results in reduced reliance on freshwater resources. The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep.
