In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. In 2014, these clients came to Sunspace with a sketch and a dream of enlarging their kitchen. The goal was to create a much larger, open room flooded with natural light. Sunspace worked with the clients to design a space that would meet their goals, and the results are presented here. The most important facet of this project was the design and inclusion of a large double hip skylight centered in the ceiling of the new space. The size of the skylight required a concealed steel frame to carry the long spans and provide the desired levels of natural lighting. Sunspace coordinated the entire project from design to kitchen renovation to completion. The space is open and light. Because the kitchen work area became part of the unified space, the client was left with a great place for family and friends to gather. Additional customization throughout the kitchen and the introduction of elegant wood flooring added to the appeal and warmth of this truly magnificent family space.

A homeowner who we’d worked with previously (a bathroom we’d remodeled for him was named ‘Bathroom of the Year’ by Boston Globe Magazine in 2007.) contacted us with a new project in mind. Following a divorce and second marriage, he and his family had moved into mid-sized home that felt too cramped for two adults and four children. Working within its existing frame, we set to work creating a more functional and pleasant living experience. The family’s main gathering area is the kitchen. We began improving the space by absorbing square footage from what had been a mudroom/laundry area behind the kitchen. This allowed us to introduce an island, creating a focal point for meal prep, cooking, and socializing. New custom cabinetry increased storage. We added a homework nook for the kids. Wider openings to the foyer and the dining room made flow between spaces easier. At the home’s entry, we re-treaded and re-finished the staircase, adding new railings and newell post. An orange fiberglass exterior door contrasts playfully with the home’s deep blue exterior. Finishing the basement allowed the introduction of a new laundry area, a cozy family room/kids play space, and a workshop. In this last space we reconfigured some kitchen items that had been ordered but were unusable due to a last-minute change in plans, including a cabinet now used for tool storage and a wall panel that became a workbench. On the home’s second floor, one bedroom had been accessible only by passing through another bedroom. The family’s two teenage children had been enduring this arrangement via solutions that included placing duct tape along the floor to mark passage boundaries. We were able to give each child much-desired private space by borrowing square-footage from a closet and carving out a hallway with separate entries for each room. Inspiration for a rustic living room remodel in Salt Lake City

This Californian home was transformed from a standard house builders’ specification into a showcase for the owners. The multi generational Indian family who lives here now has a home which unites the living and cooking areas with the outside space which reflects their way of life. The introduction of a sweeping staircase connects the first and second floors and celebrates the triple height entryway. Guests experience an open floor plan with generous vistas throughout the house with a multitude of surprise elements such as pops of charm delivered via playful wallpaper and decorative tile.

The priorities for this master bath remodel included an increased shower area, room for a dresser/clothes storage & the introduction of some sustainable materials. A custom built-in was created to house all of the husband’s clothes and was tucked neatly into the space formerly occupied by the shower. A local fabricator created countertops using concrete and recycled glass. The big, boxy tub, a floor model bought at an extreme discount, is the focal point of the room. Many of the other lines in the room echo its geometric and modern clean lines. The end result is a crisp, clean aesthetic that feels spacious and is filled with light.

Our introduction to the Tahoe site was in late winter, on a clear sunny day with filtered light and long shadows through snow-laden fir and pine bows. It made a strong impression, stored for future consideration but the impetus for the design came soon after the spring snow melt. A powerful sense of horizontal layering of vegetation and various stages of decomposing downed timber on the two-acre site, juxtaposed with pine and fir trees and the dense canopy of the surrounding forest. The site is located near the historic 1960 Olympic Nordic track, situated on the edge of wetlands and seasonal streams. The homeowners were previous clients and dreamt of having a retreat in the Sierras away from their home base in Berkeley, CA. Among skiers, bike riders, hikers, and boaters, they found the ideal central location for their home base near Lake Tahoe. The home is organized as a series of linked spaces, each providing a unique sensory experience and connection to different parts of the site, both vertically and horizontally. The design includes extensive use of glass to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and maximize natural light. At the center of the site are two large fir trees, which the building respectfully wraps around in an L shape to create a focal point in the landscaped courtyard. A refined, context-driven palette of natural materials including cedar, oak, fir, and steel is used to harmoniously blend in among the surroundings. The construction includes advanced details such as thermally broken steel beams supporting layered roof planes engineered to hold snow rather than shed it. Designed to resist significant load, we exposed the steel structure as a recurring element in the interior spaces. The resulting columns and support beams contribute to the familiar design aspects of each room and provide a better understanding of how the building was constructed. The second floor features cantilevered volumes that reach out into the nearby evergreen limbs, likening the experience to being in a tree house. The house incorporates features such as radiant heating, solar panels, and operable windows for passive cooling. Fire safety measures include the use of naturally fire-resistant materials, a Class A roof construction, sprinklers, and drought-tolerant landscaping beyond the defensible space.

In this primary bathroom remodel, a once uninspiring space was completely transformed into a fresh and modern bathroom that excelled in both aesthetics and functionality. To achieve this, the room was opened up by removing parts of the walls surrounding the shower and toilet. The introduction of a half pony wall struck a perfect balance, offering privacy while allowing light to flow freely throughout the room. Unique and stylish tiles were meticulously chosen for the shower and bathtub, injecting a sense of intentionality into the overall design. A beautiful new vanity became the centerpiece, complemented by a large mirror and new vanity lighting to complete the look. The addition of gold fixtures throughout the room added a touch of luxury, elevating the bathroom into a space that marries both form and function seamlessly.

Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen and Bath in Southern Pines, NC collaborated with Chis Sowell to design a transitional style kitchen design featuring Green Forest cabinetry. The kitchen cabinets are in the Park Place door style in a Sea Dance Green finish, complimented with Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops. The kitchen also includes a Kohler faucet and MDC D Shape sink. "I had a fantastic experience with the design and installation team at Reico. They were professional, talented, and easy to work with. Nancy, my designer, took my color preferences and created a beautiful design, addressing all my concerns about layout and budget effortlessly,” said the client. “Once the installation started, I was equally impressed with that team and process. My favorite part of the cabinets is the decision to use deep drawers on the island. I also love the gold handles and the way they accent the gold in the gorgeous countertops. The colors make all the difference to me. I have and will continue to recommend Reico to anyone who ever needs quality kitchen and bathroom design, products and installation.” “This was so much fun! The Sea Dance Green cabinetry was a new introduction and the homeowner chose it immediately. The gold accessories and the Brittanicca Gold countertop look great. THE SETUP The original L-shaped guest bathroom, primarily utilized by the client’s young nephews, presented several design challenges. The entry door’s placement at the top of the stairs created an awkward flow, while the lack of natural light and the sectioned-off toilet and shower area contributed to a cramped and dimly lit ambiance. Also – careful selection of materials and finishes contributing to the bright and airy aesthetic Inclusion of a handheld showerhead serving as a lower shower option for young guests The new floor plan and the introduction of natural light have transformed this guest bathroom into a radiant, welcoming space. The dual vanity sinks and tall storage cabinet cater to versatile needs, while the terracotta floor tiles harmonize beautifully with the overall design, adding warmth and style. The decision to keep a shower curtain for the tub/shower combination enhances the open and airy feel. Thoughtful details, such as the gear-inspired faucet handles and complementary light fixtures above the mirrors, add a touch of edgy sophistication to this multifunctional guest retreat.

Custom, luxurious window treatments which have been tailored to the highest standards are a particular speciality for Grunberger Interiors. This lush inner-city renovation in New South Whales highlights just what can be done in a small space and the luxury feel that can be achieved on a low budget. This pristine, modern unit design offers clean lines, easy flow and plenty of natural light! The client requested an ultra-luxe design and construction that catered to their functional needs with their own style and personal taste incorporated. Soft timbers enhance this space with a richness of colour, though the room maintains a light and airy feel and strong spacial lines with the introduction of black framed windows. This condo foyer is a perfect introduction to the interior, setting the mood instantly. We decided to extend the hardwood right to the entrance, since guests have a long way to walk on a carpeted corridor before arriving at the suite. We added moulding to the flat front door and painted it the same bright blue featured elsewhere in the suite. Traditional paneled doors replace basic sliding closet doors. Hand-painted pinstripes add whimsy and interest to the beige walls. While there is no room for a console table in the foyer itself, we used the walls on either side for small pieces of furniture that anchor a display of the clients' art collection. Rather than being just a pass-through area, the hallway now feels like part of the living room.
