In the home’s interior, leather-finish Cippolino marble paving was painstakingly end-matched to create the illusion of one continuous piece of stone traveling through the whole level, under a bathtub made from a single block of Cippolino marble, and transitioning into the master bath’s shower walls. On this same level the kitchen is outfitted with a 15 foot long book-matched Lapis Lazuli island countertop shaped at its perimeter with a “knife edge,” adjacent to a countertop and sink clad in book-matched Cippolino marble. Matched vein-cut travertine paving covers the floor and seamlessly continues through the living room and out onto the exterior sundeck, terminating at the swimming pool which is completely bordered by travertine coping containing slots for drainage that allow the top edge of the pool’s water to become perfectly aligned with the top edge of the adjacent travertine paving, thus creating a level surface from the kitchen to the infinity edge of the pool.

How to bridge two families together? The design looks forward in terms of how people live today. The home is an experiment in transparency and solid form; removing borders and edges from outside to inside the house, and to really depict “flowing and endless space”. The house floor plan is derived by pushing and pulling the house’s form to maximize the backyard and minimize the public front yard while welcoming the sun in key rooms by rotating the house 45-degrees to true north. The angular form of the house is a result of the family’s program, the zoning rules, the lot’s attributes, and the sun’s path. We wanted to construct a house that is smart and efficient in terms of construction and energy, both in terms of the building and the user. We could tell a story of how the house is built in terms of the constructability, structure and enclosure, with a nod to Japanese wood construction in the method in which the siding is installed and the exposed interior beams are placed in the double height space. We engineered the house to be smart which not only looks modern but acts modern; every aspect of user control is simplified to a digital touch button, whether lights, shades, blinds, HVAC, communication, audio, video, or security. We developed a planning module based on a 6-foot square room size and a 6-foot wide connector called an interstitial space for hallways, bathrooms, stairs and mechanical, which keeps the rooms pure and uncluttered. The house is 6,200 SF of livable space, plus garage and basement gallery for a total of 9,200 SF. A large formal foyer celebrates the entry and opens up to the living, dining, kitchen and family rooms all focused on the rear garden. The east side of the second floor is the Master wing and a center bridge connects it to the kid’s wing on the west. Second floor terraces and sunscreens provide views and shade in this suburban setting. The playful mathematical grid of the house in the x, y and z axis also extends into the layout of the trees and hard-scapes, all centered on a suburban one-acre lot. Many green attributes were designed into the home; Ipe wood sunscreens and window shades block out unwanted solar gain in summer, but allow winter sun in. Patio door and operable windows provide ample opportunity for natural ventilation throughout the open floor plan. Minimal windows on east and west sides to reduce heat loss in winter and unwanted gains in summer. Open floor plan and large window expanse reduces lighting demands and maximizes available daylight. Skylights provide natural light to the basement rooms. Durable, low-maintenance exterior materials include stone, ipe wood siding and decking, and concrete roof pavers. Design is based on a 2' planning grid to minimize construction waste. Basement foundation walls and slab are highly insulated. FSC-certified walnut wood flooring was used. Light colored concrete roof pavers to reduce cooling loads by as much as 15%. 2x6 framing allows for more insulation and energy savings. Super efficient windows have low-E argon gas filled units, and thermally insulated aluminum frames. Permeable brick and stone pavers reduce the site’s storm-water runoff. Countertops use recycled composite materials. Energy-Star rated furnaces and smart thermostats are located throughout the house to minimize duct runs and avoid energy loss. Energy-Star rated boiler that heats up both radiant floors and domestic hot water. Low-flow toilets and plumbing fixtures are used to conserve water usage. No VOC finish options and direct venting fireplaces maintain a high interior air quality. Smart home system controls lighting, HVAC, and shades to better manage energy use. Plumbing runs through interior walls reducing possibilities of heat loss and freezing problems. A large food pantry was placed next to kitchen to reduce trips to the grocery store. Home office reduces need for automobile transit and associated CO2 footprint. Plan allows for aging in place, with guest suite than can become the master suite, with no need to move as family members mature.

Our clients for this remodel of a 100 year old home in San Francisco’s Liberty Hill neighborhood recently moved to San Francisco. The house they purchased was very stately and had great bones, but lacked a true master suite and had recently been remodeled in a slightly generic modern style. We helped them with projects throughout the house. Our biggest project was creating a true master suite out of two bedrooms and an existing bathroom. We created an open concept bathroom with custom gray lacquer wardrobes and shoe storage units with a dramatic slot skylight overhead. Access to the master bedroom is through this room. The clean lines of the bathroom are complimented by a very long wall hung vanity with a CaesarStone counter which flows into the walk-in shower and becomes the curb. A variety of tiles including locally fabricated tile from Heath Ceramics were carefully selected to create a warm and inviting, yet modern, feeling. Oak floors similar to those in the rest of the house were used throughout the master suite for continuity. By using the same tile on the back wall of the bathroom we were able to create a visual unity from the shower through the vanity and the water closet. Custom concrete sink and vanity for kids bunk room. The concrete trough sink has a stepped front to make it easier for smaller kids to reach the sink. The overall goal of this project was to create a museum experience for the homeowners, yet have it remain comfortable and livable. The master bathroom contains an 18 ft. long x 10 ft. tall backlit shower wall that opens to a private outdoor space. Walls within the 440 sq. ft. master bath were floated square and plumb, water proofed and clad with the direct adhered method per the MIA installation standard for wet areas-stone slab residential showers. The onyx slabs were sized, templated for random colors, cut and fabricated with a 1/6" chamfer to create a jeweled edge. Hidden in these walls were backlit medicine cabinets, trash bins, and accent panels. Each panel was highlighted with a stainless muntz bar on all sizes. The custom backlit trough sinks were fabricated to contain a slot drain and functioning drawers. The entire master bath floor was treated as a wet area with suspended shower floor. A secondary shower floor underneath, pitched water to drain system below.

## I. Spatial Composition & Architectural Volume This bedroom operates as an exercise in controlled asymmetry, its plan organized around a freestanding headboard wall that reads less as partition than as inhabited architecture. Framed in a crisp oak reveal that traces its full perimeter, the wall detaches from the ceiling plane and terminates short of the right-hand elevation, generating a threshold that draws the eye into a secondary corridor volume beyond. This device — the *poché* wall as spatial pivot — establishes a layered enfilade: the intimate sleeping zone in the foreground, a transitional dressing passage in the middle distance, and a slot of daylight at the terminus. The ceiling is articulated with a shallow recessed tray and delicate stepped cornice, a restrained gesture toward classical Parisian *moulure* that regulates the room's proportion without ornamental excess. Sightlines are deliberately choreographed: the bed sits low and horizontal, the joinery plinth of the nightstand cantilevers from the wall to preserve floor-plane continuity, and the herringbone parquet visible beyond the threshold introduces a directional pull that animates what would otherwise be a static rectilinear volume. The result is a composition of nested frames — millwork within millwork — that lends considerable depth to a comparatively compact footprint. ## II. Materiality, Color & Texture The palette is tonal rather than chromatic, calibrated within a narrow band of oatmeal, greige, and pale putty, and enlivened almost entirely through surface incident. The dominant wallcovering — a vertically striated, marquetry-like textile of tessellated ivory and taupe fibers — supplies a subtle warp-and-weft rhythm that shifts under raking light, functioning as texture masquerading as pattern. Against this, rift-sawn white oak framing introduces a honeyed, gently reddish undertone, while the bespoke bedside cabinet deploys a radiating sunburst veneer in a blush-tinged walnut or eucalyptus, its book-matched geometry providing the room's single moment of overt figuration. Textiles carry the tonal counterweight: the channel-tufted headboard in a muted heather-aubergine linen offers the deepest saturation in the frame, cooling the prevailing warmth, while cotton percale with contrast tape borders, a slubbed lumbar cushion, and a hand-stitched matelassé coverlet with tambour scrollwork build a gradient of tactility from crisp to plush. The doorway's parchment-and-verdigris art panel — appearing as a gilded, oxidized *gessoed* screen — supplies a patinated, almost frescoed counterpoint, while unlacquered brass at the sconce introduces the only metallic warmth, deliberately restrained. ## III. Lighting, Atmosphere & Style Profile Illumination is handled with notable discretion. Natural light enters obliquely from an off-frame source at right, filtered through a floor-to-ceiling striated linen drapery that diffuses rather than admits, producing an even, shadowless wash consistent with northern European daylight. A secondary aperture — the narrow vertical slot glimpsed down the corridor — acts as a luminous punctuation mark, terminating the sightline with a slender bar of brightness that draws the occupant forward. Artificial lighting is intentionally sparse and task-oriented: a brass scissor-arm sconce with an unbleached linen shade, adjustable and near-vernacular in its mechanism, provides articulated reading light while contributing a note of atelier informality against the otherwise refined joinery. The absence of visible downlights or decorative pendants reinforces the room's quietude. Stylistically, the scheme resolves into a sophisticated **Soft Minimalism** inflected with contemporary Parisian classicism — the restraint and tonal discipline of the former, the millwork rigor and proportional literacy of the latter, warmed by a *wabi*-adjacent appreciation for patina and handwork. It is a room that eschews statement in favor of atmosphere, achieving luxury through material intelligence and the calibrated withholding of contrast.
