This bedroom and full bathroom are part of an adventuresome project my wife and I embarked upon to create a complete apartment in the basement of our townhouse. We designed a floor plan that creatively and efficiently used all of the 385-square-foot-space, without sacrificing beauty, comfort or function – and all without breaking the bank! To maximize our budget, we did the work ourselves and added everything from thrift store finds to DIY wall art to bring it all together. A partial double closet bar adds a little extra space while still leaving room for longer hanging clothes.

A modern inspired, contemporary town house in Philadelphia's most historic neighborhood. This custom built luxurious home provides state of the art urban living on six levels with all the conveniences of suburban homes. Vertical staking allows for each floor to have its own function, feel, style and purpose, yet they all blend to create a rarely seen home. A six-level elevator makes movement easy throughout. With over 5,000 square feet of usable indoor space and over 1,200 square feet of usable exterior space, this is urban living at its best. Taragano Design & Build completed this kitchen as part of a whole house remodel in Berkeley, California. Color was the client's call and the layout supports it. A saturated cabinet color across a full wall only works if the wall is uninterrupted, so appliances were panelled in and the pantry run was carried floor to ceiling. Broken up by a stainless refrigerator front, the same color reads as a mistake. The island is freestanding and topped in solid wood rather than stone. It works as a prep surface and a table, and in a kitchen where the perimeter carries all the wet and hot functions, the center does not need to be a hard surface. Storage was consolidated into one wall instead of distributed. Everything that is not sink, dishwasher, or range lives in that run, which leaves the window wall low and open and keeps the room's one exterior exposure clear. The niche and arch were kept from the original house. In a home of this period, those are the details that place it, and replacing them with square openings would have made the kitchen newer and the house worse. When friends heard that we were planning to build a new home (especially at our time in life) we were regaled with stories of frustration, mistakes, and financial complications. We were convinced it was right to build a small efficient home, so the stories were dismissed with the conviction that we would find the RIGHT general contractor to avoid the pitfalls of home construction. Our decision to use Todd Swanson and Bio-Hab Inc. reflected our desire to use natural, energy efficient materials and systems, to stay small, and to work with a contractor expressing honesty, open-ness, and common sense. We also welcomed his artistic talent in designing and finish work using natural materials -earth plaster,earth floors, wood exteriors and more. We began by working with a designer and Todd in our house design. Todd collaborated with the designer to not only make the design more beautiful and functional, but also practical to construct. We are very pleased with the finished product and love our home. It was easy AND a pleasure to work with Todd. We appreciated his high standard sub contractors and lead men- not only were they professional, they were cheerful to have around! With two small children and a third on the way, the owners of an original eighteenth century Cape were quickly out-growing it, but they had no desire to move away from the Cape Cod home and location they loved. They simply needed a reconfigured layout and more space. Their goals included repurposing some existing rooms, adding a new kitchen/family area plus screen porch on the first level, and creating a master suite and roof deck with an outdoor shower on the second level, connected by a new stair. Our challenge was to improve the flow between existing spaces, and design the two-story addition without overwhelming the pint-sized original Cape. We took advantage of the lower grade at the rear of the property to step the first floor of the addition down two steps from the existing main level. This allowed us to align the second floor in the addition with the existing second floor, while gaining ceiling height in the new first-floor kitchen/family area. We composed a cross-gabled form for the addition to improve the second floor headroom, while maintaining the existing eave line. We then extended some existing shed dormers to gain headroom and enhance function. We also expanded the outdoor living area with privacy walls along the roof deck. New, larger, double–hung windows that match the lite configuration of the existing windows, along with new side-wall shingles and trim which resemble the existing exterior treatment help to tie the new addition to the old Cape. Though there’s no mistaking the new for the old, the two are simpatico.
