The client’s brief was to create a space reminiscent of their beloved downtown Chicago industrial loft, in a rural farm setting, while incorporating their unique collection of vintage and architectural salvage. The result is a custom designed space that blends life on the farm with an industrial sensibility. The new house is located on approximately the same footprint as the original farm house on the property. Barely visible from the road due to the protection of conifer trees and a long driveway, the house sits on the edge of a field with views of the neighbouring 60 acre farm and creek that runs along the length of the property. The main level open living space is conceived as a transparent social hub for viewing the landscape. Large sliding glass doors create strong visual connections with an adjacent barn on one end and a mature black walnut tree on the other. The house is situated to optimize views, while at the same time protecting occupants from blazing summer sun and stiff winter winds. The wall to wall sliding doors on the south side of the main living space provide expansive views to the creek, and allow for breezes to flow throughout. The wrap around aluminum louvered sun shade tempers the sun. The subdued exterior material palette is defined by horizontal wood siding, standing seam metal roofing and large format polished concrete blocks. The interiors were driven by the owners’ desire to have a home that would properly feature their unique vintage collection, and yet have a modern open layout. Polished concrete floors and steel beams on the main level set the industrial tone and are paired with a stainless steel island counter top, backsplash and industrial range hood in the kitchen. An old drinking fountain is built-in to the mudroom millwork, carefully restored bi-parting doors frame the library entrance, and a vibrant antique stained glass panel is set into the foyer wall allowing diffused coloured light to spill into the hallway. Upstairs, refurbished claw foot tubs are situated to view the landscape. The double height library with mezzanine serves as a prominent feature and quiet retreat for the residents. The white oak millwork exquisitely displays the homeowners’ vast collection of books and manuscripts. The material palette is complemented by steel counter tops, stainless steel ladder hardware and matte black metal mezzanine guards. The stairs carry the same language, with white oak open risers and stainless steel woven wire mesh panels set into a matte black steel frame. This small kitchen space needed to have every inch function well for this young family. By adding the banquette seating we were able to get the table out of the walkway and allow for easier flow between the rooms. Wall cabinets to the counter on either side of the custom plaster hood gave room for food storage as well as the microwave to get tucked away. The clean lines of the slab drawer fronts and beaded inset make the space feel visually larger.

The open floor plan between the living room, dining room, and kitchen in this vacation home designed by Colorado architect Dominique Gettliffe allows for this space to be used for meals, yoga, relaxing, or dancing late into the night.

This kitchen renovation started when the ceiling light began to flicker on and off. Realizing the age of that light fixture brought the homeowners to wonder just how long the rest of their appliances would last. The kitchen was more than fifteen years old. Remodeling the kitchen was the opportunity they needed to create the space they desperately wanted. First on the list was an area to entertain and cook, second was that is be Kid friendly for their grandchildren, and third, they wanted the kitchen to open up to their adjacent living room. All new appliances, quality Fieldstone cabinets, and new hardwood flooring throughout the first floor brought this kitchen up to speed. They liked the idea of extending the counter to create a large seating area. This turned out to be the best loved feature of their new kitchen. Working with the designer and the granite company, they made a unique “tear drop” extension of the counter for seating. The old “breakfast” table moved out! Bright, airy and beautiful- the homeowners are thrilled.

The perimeter countertop of this farmhouse kitchen remodel contrasts the dark granite of the island. The stone is called "Crystal Gold Leather" and has a textured look. It was honed to remove the shine of the granite. The Crystal Gold Leather granite originates from Brazil. This kitchen area is set up in a 90° angle, dividing the room into a cooking area and a dining area with seats at the kitchen counter. High cabinets are set apart and contain an integrated refrigerator and plenty of room for groceries. To light up the overall room we chose Flos downlights coupled with a focused light above the kitchen counter in the form of a beautiful brass LED-lamp from Anour.

This laundry room and mudroom remodel was designed to create a clean, efficient, and welcoming space with elevated style. What was once a purely utilitarian area is now an organized, joyful, and multifunctional room that supports everyday routines and reduces clutter from the family’s frequent use of the garage entry. Thoughtful cabinetry, improved organization, durable work surfaces, and dedicated areas for air-drying, sorting, and folding make the room feel like a practical extension of the home rather than simply a utility space. Functional Features • A custom fold-down drying rack provides a beautiful and practical solution for air-drying delicate clothing. • The tall drawer stack between the washer and dryer includes an oversized lower drawer that functions as a built-in hamper. • A custom built-in bench with storage lockers keeps coats and shoes tidy yet accessible, while motion-sensor lighting in the shoe cubbies makes everyday use convenient at any time of day. • Cabinetry extends to the ceiling, maximizing vertical storage and concealing bulk items such as paper goods, detergents, cleaning supplies, outdoor clothing, and other household essentials. Materials and Finishes Durable materials were selected to withstand frequent use while maintaining a cohesive, elevated look. Large-format dark floor tile helps conceal dirt tracked in from the garage, while a combination of warm white and deep cherry cabinetry adds richness and contrast. Stain-resistant white quartz was used for both the folding counter and bench top, and a 2 ½-inch round mosaic tile backsplash complements the palette. Brushed gold hardware adds warmth and visual appeal. Lighting Lighting enhancements further improve both function and atmosphere. Under-cabinet lighting at the folding counter adds task illumination, while motion-sensor lighting in the shoe cubbies increases convenience. An oversized statement ceiling fixture brings warmth, personality, and a finished designer touch to the space.
