The Atherton House is a family compound for a professional couple in the tech industry, and their two teenage children. After living in Singapore, then Hong Kong, and building homes there, they looked forward to continuing their search for a new place to start a life and set down roots.
The site is located on Atherton Avenue on a flat, 1 acre lot. The neighboring lots are of a similar size, and are filled with mature planting and gardens. The brief on this site was to create a house that would comfortably accommodate the busy lives of each of the family members, as well as provide opportunities for wonder and awe. Views on the site are internal. Our goal was to create an indoor- outdoor home that embraced the benign California climate.
The building was conceived as a classic “H” plan with two wings attached by a double height entertaining space. The “H” shape allows for alcoves of the yard to be embraced by the mass of the building, creating different types of exterior space. The two wings of the home provide some sense of enclosure and privacy along the side property lines. The south wing contains three bedroom suites at the second level, as well as laundry. At the first level there is a guest suite facing east, powder room and a Library facing west.
The north wing is entirely given over to the Primary suite at the top level, including the main bedroom, dressing and bathroom. The bedroom opens out to a roof terrace to the west, overlooking a pool and courtyard below. At the ground floor, the north wing contains the family room, kitchen and dining room. The family room and dining room each have pocketing sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary between inside and outside.
Connecting the wings is a double high living space meant to be comfortable, delightful and awe-inspiring. A custom fabricated two story circular stair of steel and glass connects the upper level to the main level, and down to the basement “lounge” below. An acrylic and steel bridge begins near one end of the stair landing and flies 40 feet to the children’s bedroom wing. People going about their day moving through the stair and bridge become both observed and observer.
The front (EAST) wall is the all important receiving place for guests and family alike. There the interplay between yin and yang, weathering steel and the mature olive tree, empower the entrance. Most other materials are white and pure.
The mechanical systems are efficiently combined hydronic heating and cooling, with no forced air required.

A collection that unites the poetic and unique beauty of stones harnessed by Dekton® technology, as those dreams where we observe and vaguely feel in control but only the deepest part of our mind truly understands. The collection is named in honor of the lavish inspiration of the two worlds conveyed in marbled colors to captivate our eyes and bring to any space a feeling we understand but cannot explain.

The Gillman Garden by Victoria Fensterer of Victoria Fensterer Landscape and Garden Design, LLC
Flowers overflow in this lush, sun-filled garden for a charming and historic farmhouse. The landscape for this Amangassett retreat includes a courtyard and pool area. In the courtyard garden, a central axis provides structure to the design while old large evergreens provide height and a sense of enclosure. A rose pergola and vine-covered arbor lead to garden spaces beyond.
An existing pool was recreated into a more organic shape, lined with large stones and boulders. Small evergreens complement older established ones, creating a secluded enclave. The patio was paved with warm-hued stone and edged by planting beds. Here the plantings take on a tropical feeling. A rustic pavilion provides a cozy place to sit and observe the light dancing off the water and to listen to the sound of birds and wind in the trees.
On the south side of the property, the landscape architect planted a group of large broadleaf and needled evergreens to provide privacy and year-round interest. Additional windows were added to the farmhouse to take full advantage of the beautiful view. Photo by Robert Eckholm

The owners envisioned an outdoor space that would allow them to enjoy the life cycles of the elements. The challenge was to blend the casualness of a true native Florida garden with the modern origami-inspired architecture. The crisp lines and bold hardscape textures and colors act as an interlude between the soft, seemingly unstructured flora and the sharp white building and walls. An edible garden, butterfly and larva attractants, and wildflower mixture allow the owners to experience the seasonal evolution of their landscape while recycled hardscape materials provide the access for observation.

Pool Patio Travertine - Long Island, NY

With this photo all of us observe a lovely backyard setting, which has a pool patio created from natural stone in Jamesport, New York (11947). Natural stones that define this patio and laid in what’s known as a French pattern, this provides the patio a really clean cut turn to it. Throughout the patio we view many different kinds of landscaping that add color to your backyard. Additionally we view a fireplace which is perfect entertainment for the guests within the warm summer and fall evenings. As well as the warm summer and fall days there’s always this excellent in ground rectangle vinyl swimming pool area for cooling off in for all of your relatives and buddies to experience together with you. http://deckandpationaturalstones.com/travertine-pavers-pool-patio.html

Eye-catching kitchen vent hood in modern dark gray that combined with light gray to bright up the beautiful kitchen that observes the peaceful back yard. This project is a stunning kitchen transformation in a luxurious neighborhood in Flower Mound, Tx. This formerly dark kitchen that used to provide a cramped feeling to everyone who set in there got a massive transformation with a fresh coat of paint, modern color touches, lightning, and hardware.

Aesthetic Value: The subtle lines and light color of the radiata pine stringer model spiral provide nice contrast with the eccentric iron balustrade. Laser cut Tinkerbells and abstract Mickey Mouse and fireworks elements contribute unique detail.
Stair Safety: The balustrade rejects a 4" sphere in all areas despite the complex detail of the components and floating rail above the laser cut elements.
Quality: The balustrade features predominantly laser cut sections fabricated with minimal visible welds and custom finished in-house with a three step guilders paste application.
Technical Challenge: Creating the complex ironwork design in a way that has aesthetically pleasing sections that fit the theme and space. Attention to meticulous details that convey the theme even at deepest levels of observing the stair.

A closer look at one of the boulder retaining walls reveals the natural, well-balanced arrangement of stones that give the structure character and strength. Modern path lights softly illuminate the stone steps and new plantings nearby, while the green lawn of the lower terrace stretches below. Every element in view: the wall, the steps, the plantings, the lawn, chosen to serve its purpose and be beautiful to observe.

Echium - Pride of Madera with Euphorbia and Aloes in this vast hillside in San Anselmo, Northern California and the personal sanctuary of Landscape Designer Eileen Kelly, owner of Dig Your Garden Landscape Design. This sustainable garden also serves as Eileen's "living laboratory" where she observes and learns from the habits and growth of her extensive selection of plants. They include hundreds of varieties of low-water plants that range from California natives to plants from other Mediterranean regions. This diverse garden also offers an abundance of biodiversity and balance for the birds, the bees and the butterflies. The Honeymoon Cottage began as a childhood dream for Vinny as he watched his grandfather build his home. A house for a Scientist and a future architect, in both process and product, this house served as an opportunity and challenge. Physically fabricated by him and his wife, as architect and owner, contractor and client, laborer and occupant, this house has the same program, budget and type of construction as its neighbors. A goal of the Honeymoon Cottage is to celebrate and reinterpret, rather than reinvent, the framework of its early suburban neighborhood.

A&E Construction. This Pennington NJ remodel of a master bath en-suite features marble basketweave tile detailing and a generous walk-in shower area. One of the two master bathrooms in this home. This one is more feminine as expressed by the woodwork and color tones. Once again we can really observe how the windows add character to the space by allowing for an abundance of natural light and one-of-a-kind view.
