Sunken seating areas are becoming common design elements that peak many client’s wish lists. A sunken seating area can be one of many features yet often is a great location for a fire pit. They provide a vantage point that is not customary yet quite desirable. As when you are nestled into the framework of a surrounding outdoor living environment one can’t help to feel secure and cozy. When placed pool side the views across the water elevation evokes a sense of calm. It seems quite simple, as the once under-appreciated idea of lowering ones vantage point is now quite popular.

The Benefits of Frameless Glass Shower Doors
Of course, the top benefit to frameless shower doors is an aesthetic one. They provide a feeling of spaciousness to a small bathroom by their transparency and lack of framework.
On frameless shower doors, the door is able to be opened in either an outward or inward direction owing to an improved hinge design. This provides the architect or designer with more options in a small bathroom regarding the critical placement of other fixtures and accessories.
The design options with frameless shower doors themselves are practically limitless as well. Frameless shower enclosures can be fashioned in any size or shape imaginable, inspiring the architect or designer and homeowner to be as creative as possible and cleaning is quick and easy.

Dramatic framework forms a matrix focal point over this North Scottsdale home's back patio and negative edge pool, underlining the architect's trademark use of symmetry to draw the eye through the house and out to the stunning views of the Valley beyond. This almost 9000 SF hillside hideaway is an effortless blend of Old World charm with contemporary style and amenities.
Organic colors and rustic finishes connect the space with its desert surroundings. Large glass walls topped with clerestory windows that retract into the walls open the main living space to the outdoors.

The owner of this Devil’s Glen Ski Resort chalet was determined to honour the original structure built by his father.
At the same time, a growing family created the need for an amplified space. The design for the enlarged chalet attempts to incorporate proportions and angles from the original craftsman styled structure while simultaneously taking cues from the challenging mountain site.
Stonework and timber beams create a framework for expansive glazing that affords sweeping views to the mountain, snow and sky. As a result, a new generation of skiers is engaged with the mountain and it’s community in the same way the owner’s father provided him.

The Curvature In The Framework Provide An Architectural “Clasp” That Becomes An Integral Part Of The White Cylindrical Glass Diffuser Providing An Elegant Way Of Holding It. Delicate Ivy Leaf Work Softens The Forms And Blends Harmoniously With The Simple Ironwork.

This small weekend cabin designed by the owner is incredibly space-efficient. Hosting 2 bedrooms and 2 baths by sharing a shower and having an office space that doubles as a second bedroom by utilizing a Murphy bed, the modest 7oo SF footprint can comfortably accommodate guests. The outdoor spaces expand the living area with a 400 SF porch and a 200 SF deck that overlooks the river below. Materials were carefully selected to provide sustainable beauty and durability. The siding and decking are Kebony, interior floors are polished concrete (with hydronic heat), the fireplace surround is board-formed concrete (no finish applied), and the built-ins and half of the interior doors are cedar. The other interior doors are painted poplar with a waxed-steel band. A reclaimed pine countertop finishes off the natural steel framework made by a local fabricator. Houseworks provided the doors, built-in cabinetry, and poured-in-place concrete for the fireplace and remote firepit.

Monroe Place by Robin Key of Robin Key Landscape Architecture
The landscape architect worked closely with the owners to design the front and rear gardens of this Brooklyn Heights townhouse. Located in a historic district, the front garden ironwork and original bluestone sidewalk were restored with the approval of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. In the rear garden, materials were carefully selected to create a balance between the historic landscape and the new elements. The stone patios, laid using salvaged bluestone already existing on the site, are defined by two linear, stacked-stone fountains where water cascades gently into low pools. A raised wood deck at the back of the property is nestled within a bed of soft moss and wispy ferns, creating a peaceful seating area surrounded by woodland plantings. Here modern garden furniture and sculpture create a bold contrast. Throughout the property, the site’s existing mature trees were preserved to serve as a framework for the garden. A lower level seating area adjacent to the house provides the owners with an outdoor kitchen and area for entertaining. Photo courtesy Robin Key Landscape Architecture

Garden by Lake Michigan by Maria Smithburg of Artemisia
This property by Lake Michigan provided a magnificent framework for the new space by using the reflective quality of the water as a metaphor for the creation of the garden: a moving landscape of passing clouds by the lake. The owners were empty nesters and had no need to keep the swimming pool alive. The landscape architect’s idea was to replace this pool with a collection of water features to include a series of sculptures. The soft rhythm of the undulating pools captures the sky in the water and echoes the colors of the lake. This is emphasized by the combination of perennials and ornamental grasses that follow the movement of the lines. The water cascades down into different levels until it reaches the lower pools in the garden. Intimate seating areas were nestled among the pools, providing the perfect spot to enjoy the lake views and the sunset. Photo by Maria Smithburg

Nestled in a Redwood forest, the house on Upper Moonraker is a cook's paradise with homage paid to the owners' love of crafts and exquisite home-carved wooden ducks. Sea Ranch Architect David Moulton AIA designed a hefty, hand-milled walnut island set over custom made cherry cabinets as the initial kitchen focal point. A mighty Wolf stove framed in stainless steel shelving provides the framework for power cooking and the owner's collection of bright red Le Creuset pots and pans. Wild Rice Ceasarstone countertops are a sleek but soft complement to a Rolf sink both wide and deep enough to accommodate large pots and pans and a Blanco pull-down faucet provides for easy clean up of freshly-picked garden vegetables. Adding to the ambiance of real cookery, a wrap-around wall-sized blackboard with stainless shelving provides the perfect place to keep track of often-used recipes, favorite spices, utensils, pots and pans.
