We planned a thoughtful redesign of this beautiful home while retaining many of the existing features. We wanted this house to feel the immediacy of its environment. So we carried the exterior front entry style into the interiors, too, as a way to bring the beautiful outdoors in. In addition, we added patios to all the bedrooms to make them feel much bigger. Luckily for us, our temperate California climate makes it possible for the patios to be used consistently throughout the year.
The original kitchen design did not have exposed beams, but we decided to replicate the motif of the 30" living room beams in the kitchen as well, making it one of our favorite details of the house. To make the kitchen more functional, we added a second island allowing us to separate kitchen tasks. The sink island works as a food prep area, and the bar island is for mail, crafts, and quick snacks.
We designed the primary bedroom as a relaxation sanctuary – something we highly recommend to all parents. It features some of our favorite things: a cognac leather reading chair next to a fireplace, Scottish plaid fabrics, a vegetable dye rug, art from our favorite cities, and goofy portraits of the kids.

The client wanted to have a modern, bright open-plan space with updated colours, finishes, furniture and lighting in a fresher style. We created plans and recommended storage strategies in the rest of the home so the main living area would be free of clutter and elegant enough for entertaining. The bright colour palette of white and warm greys blends beautifully with the wood elements. The chrome lighting and reflective silver mirror add bling and visual interest to the room. The white sheer curtain adds softness and the final touch.
Materials used:
Wood dining table, modern white leather chairs, black and white trellis dining room curtains, white and chrome light suspension with crystal, hardwood floors, modern chrome tripod floor lamp, dark purple chaise longue, sheer white living room curtains, white lacquer and wood media unit, grey fabric storage ottoman, spotlight-style tripod lamp.

“We got taller cabinets for the uppers on the walls plus increased storage under the island. The style of the cabinets fits in with all our Mid Century modern furnishings and wood trim,” he adds.
This was even more impressive considering that Brian and the contractor had to overcome some obstacles due to the original construction of the kitchen.
“The wall behind the cabinets was essentially horsehair plaster on brick, and also the issue with the plumbing was running through the cabinets,” he explains.
Lastly, Brian opted not to use IKEA’s under cabinet lighting system, instead choosing a lighting system recommended by the general contractor’s electrician.

We often come across clients looking for small space ideas. Our first recommendation is always to go bright. The depth of our glaze color adds visual interest and a bold color choice helps make a space appear larger. Posh and polished (just like the homeowner) this stunning sapphire blue bathroom will have you in awe. The owner of this amazing lake house is our friend Rachel Shingleton of Pencil Shavings Studio. Her refined design-eye coupled with our bright and bold tile transformed this small bathroom into the perfect master bath. And could you believe it? This is a super simple project! Read on to learn more about this design and how to achieve the look yourself.
Another great way to open up a small bathroom is by using smaller tile! Our regular Hexagons are the great example of this - approximately 2"x2" their small size maximizes the rest of the room, and their classic shape is perfect for a bathroom floor.

Transitional bathroom vanity with polished grey quartz countertop, dark blue cabinets with black hardware, Moen Doux faucets in black, Ann Sacks Savoy backsplash tile in cottonwood, 8"x8" patterned tile floor, and chic oval black framed mirrors by Paris Mirrors. Rain-textured glass shower wall, and a deep tray ceiling with a skylight.

Bedroom - small transitional guest carpeted and beige floor bedroom idea in Toronto with beige walls

We reconfigured this kitchen - removing a wall - to allow for a large island for entertaining. With two young children, durability was key. We chose Brownstone stools customized with performance fabric on the back to introduce a bit of pattern and wipeable faux leather seats.
The backsplash over range is a single slab of Eureka Danby from Vermont's Dorsett Mountain, which wipes down easily. The Lostine pendants and sconces introduce a smidge of midcentury vibes. The tongue and groove backsplash and soapstone counters provide a quaint farmhouse feel; and we chose the fabric for the roman shade from a Parisian fabric house, Antoinette Poisson, which specializes in 18th century pattern designs, to add a bit of history.
