Mid-sized traditional red one-story brick house exterior idea in Chicago with a hip roof and a shingle roof
Mid-sized traditional red one-story brick house exterior idea in Chicago with a hip roof and a shingle roof

We planned a thoughtful redesign of this beautiful home while retaining many of the existing features. We wanted this house to feel the immediacy of its environment. So we carried the exterior front entry style into the interiors, too, as a way to bring the beautiful outdoors in. In addition, we added patios to all the bedrooms to make them feel much bigger. Luckily for us, our temperate California climate makes it possible for the patios to be used consistently throughout the year.
The original kitchen design did not have exposed beams, but we decided to replicate the motif of the 30" living room beams in the kitchen as well, making it one of our favorite details of the house. To make the kitchen more functional, we added a second island allowing us to separate kitchen tasks. The sink island works as a food prep area, and the bar island is for mail, crafts, and quick snacks.
We designed the primary bedroom as a relaxation sanctuary – something we highly recommend to all parents. It features some of our favorite things: a cognac leather reading chair next to a fireplace, Scottish plaid fabrics, a vegetable dye rug, art from our favorite cities, and goofy portraits of the kids.

Potting mixes for container gardens need to drain freely, but still retain moisture. My base potting soil mix contains (clockwise from upper left) coarse builder's sand, high-quality organic compost or worm castings, coconut coir, and small lava rock. I supplement this with additional compost, fresh worm castings, and organic soil amendments, with the amounts varying depending on what I'm planting. Photo by Steve Masley

Every successful bath project starts with the right design plan and for this teen’s bathroom, creating a stylish space reflecting their personalities was a must.
Safety features, good lighting and proper ventilation improved the usability and enhanced the space for these young adults. We recommended a vent fan that not only removes unwanted moisture but also can stream their favorite music from their smart phones Bluetooth so that the phones can stay safe and dry in a nearby room.
Transitional larger format tile in a neutral grey tone, unique and decorative glass tile and brushed nickel edging around the shower cubby added an element of dimension and style. The decorative tile created a stunning focal-point to the back wall of the shower and complimented the brushed nickel fixtures and tending finishes of the white quartz countertop and grey-blend porcelain plank flooring.

This Cobble Hill Brownstone for a family of five is a fun and captivating design, the perfect blend of the wife’s love of English country style and the husband’s preference for modern. The young power couple, her the co-founder of Maisonette and him an investor, have three children and a dog, requiring that all the surfaces, finishes and, materials used throughout the home are both beautiful and durable to make every room a carefree space the whole family can enjoy.
The primary design challenge for this project was creating both distinct places for the family to live their day to day lives and also a whole floor dedicated to formal entertainment. The clients entertain large dinners on a monthly basis as part of their profession. We solved this by adding an extension on the Garden and Parlor levels. This allowed the Garden level to function as the daily family operations center and the Parlor level to be party central. The kitchen on the garden level is large enough to dine in and accommodate a large catering crew.
On the parlor level, we created a large double parlor in the front of the house; this space is dedicated to cocktail hour and after-dinner drinks. The rear of the parlor is a spacious formal dining room that can seat up to 14 guests. The middle "library" space contains a bar and facilitates access to both the front and rear rooms; in this way, it can double as a staging area for the parties.
The remaining three floors are sleeping quarters for the family and frequent out of town guests. Designing a row house for private and public functions programmatically returns the building to a configuration in line with its original design.

Creating these beautiful bathrooms for an Algiers' couple was a delight! Although they knew exactly what they wanted from the start, they were very open to my ideas and recommendations. Porcelain tiles were selected for its durability, warm gray tones for a relaxing feel and chrome fixtures/hardware to add a subtle sparkle.

BEFORE & AFTER! We started this journey a couple months ago. Angela came up with the idea of using the existing cabinets since they were of excellent quality. So we were left with paint colors, back splash and counter top. She also wanted to replace all of the appliances. Up first, Crystal from Shabby Brown Restore, to look at painting these cabinets in an off-Black-Gloss. Since it didn't have much natural light, I suggested gloss to bounce the light around. The end result is stunning, but not recommended for families with young kids, AKA "messy" fingerprints. Crystal and her husband did an incredible job and I'd recommend them to anyone considering such an endeavor. Next up, Albany Marble, to choose back splash and counter-top, material. Angela fell in love with this gorgeous, natural Quartz and the glass backsplash is super fun. I always use Albany Marble, for all my solid surface and tile needs. Albany Marble is a direct importer, so truly one cannot beat the prices and the welcoming customer service is stellar! The original kitchen didn't have enough cabinets, so we extended the Refrigerator wall, by adding 4 more uppers and lowers. We also had to cut off the Bar counter to even out and enlarge the counter space. As you can see, the end result is over the top! They say it takes a village and here we proved that it indeed takes a solid team! #Anotherbdesigns #allinthedetails #shabbybrownrestore #albanymarbleinc #blackkitchens #kitchenremodel #kitchenfacelift #quartzcountertops #naturalquartz #Glasstile #Shineon #ange

Interior Designer, Anne Figueroa of Figueroa Design, www.annefigueroadesign.com
Our client had a house filled with newly installed white paint-grade wood paneling, white doors & trim. The interior designer asked us to come up with a sample of faux wood to show the client in tones recommended to suit our client's taste. The end result of their approved samples was this 4-layer wood finish. We also recommended we add a bit of hand-painted artwork to the wood arch panel to give it a little extra interest. We gold leafed the crown molding, glazed the dining room walls red, the ceilings gold and the rest of the house walls the same soft gold faux.
