Food Heaven & Hell London Brothers’ bistro design concept started from the menu.“Food Heaven & Food Hell” made us immediately think of duality and also link it to British flag’s colors. It felt natural to divide the space into two almost symmetrical sides, and play with the blue-red color scheme. In all restaurant projects we try to reflect the spirit of the place, so we opted for a contemporary design with industrial touches. We played with contrasting tones and textures: metal and greys, warm wood and plants. Since the space was not generous to begin with, we descided to spice things up. Wall art in intense colors and using the ceiling for wood decoration. As for the sitting area, benches combined with chairs is the best option to save space. The lamps were chosen for their double role: functionality and decorative as a little bit of greenery is always welcomed. The recipe was a success – yet we believe the best thing here is the delicious menu.

Every inch of this 4,200-square-foot condo on Las Olas—two units combined into one inside the tallest building in Fort Lauderdale—is dripping with glamour, starting right away in the entrance with Phillip Jeffries’ Cloud wallpaper and crushed velvet gold chairs by Koket. Along with tearing out some of the bathrooms and installing sleek and chic new vanities, Laure Nell Interiors outfitted the residence with all the accoutrements that make it perfect for the owners—two doctors without children—to enjoy an evening at home alone or entertaining friends and family. On one side of the condo, we turned the previous kitchen into a wet bar off the family room. Inspired by One Hotel, the aesthetic here gives off permanent vacation vibes. A large rattan light fixture sets a beachy tone above a custom-designed oversized sofa. Also on this side of the unit, a light and bright guest bedroom, affectionately named the Bali Room, features Phillip Jeffries’ silver leaf wallpaper and heirloom artifacts that pay homage to the Indian heritage of one of the owners. In another more-moody guest room, a Currey and Co. Grand Lotus light fixture gives off a golden glow against Phillip Jeffries’ dip wallcovering behind an emerald green bed, while an artist hand painted the look on each wall. The other side of the condo took on an aesthetic that reads: The more bling, the better. Think crystals and chrome and a 78-inch circular diamond chandelier. The main kitchen, living room (where we custom-surged together Surya rugs), dining room (embellished with jewelry-like chain-link Yale sconces by Arteriors), office, and master bedroom (overlooking downtown and the ocean) all reside on this side of the residence. And then there’s perhaps the jewel of the home: the powder room, illuminated by Tom Dixon pendants. The homeowners hiked Machu Picchu together and fell in love with a piece of art on their trip that we designed the entire bathroom around. It’s one of many personal objets found throughout the condo, making this project a true labor of love.

The new design of the kitchen went from dark and dreary to bright and inviting. With new custom designed tiles, a beverage serving areas, custom island and surrounding cabinets. Every detail in this kitchen was thought of. Ginger Rabe Designs, LLC also did a refresh on the bathroom as well as the adjoining dining room. The house is ready for entertaining to all ages. The dark cabinets and countertop made the room feel dull. And the major drawback, a large corner pantry that was eating into the room, make it appear smaller than it was. We started by ditching the corner pantry. It created a perfectly centered spot for the new professional range and made room for a much larger island that now houses a beverage center, microwave drawer, seating for three and tons of storage. The multi-generational family does a ton of cooking, so this kitchen gets used! We spent lots of time fine tuning the storage devices and planning where critical items would be stored. This included the new pantry area across from the refrigerator that houses small appliances and food staples. Sometimes great things come from small things and this entryway project was exactly like that. This very small yet interesting project started almost by accident. Entryway TileI had completed a tile job a few months before and had some high quality porcelain tile left over. It was nice tile so I was hesitant to toss it out but after moving the pile around my shop for several months I finally decided to throw it away. While loading my pickup with miscellaneous construction garbage – and this great tile – one of my neighbors stopped by for a chat about some of my recent projects. I showed him the great left over tile that I was throwing away and asked him if he had any interest in taking it off my hands – for free. He said he was actually thinking about replacing his existing tile landing at his house because although it had been redone just a few years ago, it had cracked. We went over and took a look at his landing and decided the scrap tile might be a perfect solution. tile floorI told my neighbor “you come up with any design you want, and I’ll bring that to life.” He came up with an idea and sketched out the idea within a couple of days. As soon as I looked at the sketches, I knew it was going to be a very challenging project, but I also knew it would be a rewarding project I would be proud to put the Corvus name on. We took the final sketch and imported it into a graphics design program to make the focal point of the design work within the existing space and fine tune the look of the project to fit the available space of the entryway. This was going to be a highly customized undertaking that was going to be all about the details. Because every tile had to be custom cut, I printed out the final design from the program to create a stencil to trace the outline on each tile. After all of the painstaking tile cutting, I laid it out in a mock-up on the entry floor. Then we were ready to overcome our next challenge – the flexing and moving sub floor. The existing tile landing that we were replacing had been installed just a few years earlier but had already cracked down the center. This fracture made me realize that we needed to find a way to somehow decouple the substrate from the finished tile surface to prevent the same problem from cropping up again. tile floor entrywayI decided to go with a Schluter-DITRA™ tile underlay for this job. Working with DITRA™ was surprisingly simple. The only thing you need to remember is to use unmodified thinset mortar when setting tile over this substrate, because modified thinset would take a very long time to cure. We also decided to use QuartzLock™ urethane grout for the floor because it expands and contracts when the floor flexes under foot traffic and could help prevent future cracking. In the end the project came out great! My neighbor is thrilled and can’t wait to show it off to anyone that stops by. This is a great example of how custom work can really amp up the appeal of your home and how a small change can make a big difference in the look of your home.

Our designer Jamie finally had the pleasure of designing her own kitchen. After nearly 10 years of designing for clients, it was time she designed her own home. Jamie knew what she wanted right from the start, and we think she nailed the look!

There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

Contemporary bathrooms are one of the highest trending designs in recent years, and for good reason too! With this style of space, you get all the benefits of experiencing a luxurious and clean-looking bathroom, as well as high-quality functionality from the materials. These two bathrooms are no exception. The unit was constructed in the ’80s, having an outdated traditional design that doesn’t cut it with today's standards. Both spaces were originally built with cheap materials that began deteriorating, making the functionality frustrating and unattractive. However, with the recent remodeling project, we took care of all those nuisances. We think that both spaces turned out fantastic, especially the vanities with the wall matching countertops that seamlessly blend together, making both designs feel complete and perfectly catered for the home. When we got a green light from the designer and the customer after their acceptance of our shop drawing, we started fabrication of those custom made cabinets. During fabrication some changes were made, the designer wanted to gain as much space as possible so the contractor had to open up some additional walls where all electrical and plumbing pipes were hidden. By doing that, we had to resize some of the cabinets, which resulted in change an order. The kitchen cabinet fronts had a custom profile which was very unique. All of the custom cabinets were made of pre-finished maple inside and satin lacquer fronts outside. Drawers slides were by Blum under mount soft close; cabinet doors hinges by Blum soft closing. The upper cabinets got under mount LED lights. Living room units were made of pre-finished maple inside and primed outside only; the client wished to apply wall paint on them rather than lacquer that we use to make sure it blends in with the walls leaving rough surface. Overall, we did a fantastic job. Just a small hint to everyone, before you make any decision think first before it might get more costly later.
