Though the walls and most of the cabinetry are painted “Super White”, the real eyecatchers are the custom brass-trimmed black hood; the black mullion glass doors flanking the hood; and the black front and rear island bases, which echo the black-framed windows. With the addition of elegant Calacatta Gold marble countertops with waterfall island ends and slab backsplashes, I challenge you to say the inclusion of black makes the kitchen feel small or dark. Despite contemporary touches, the cabinetry is traditional flush inset construction; doors and large drawers are wide-framed classic Shaker styling with a stepped inner profile. The fridge and dishwasher are paneled to match to avoid distraction. Decorative hardware is honey bronze; the faucet and instant hot are sleek matte black. Pulling triple duty is the peninsula, which houses a microwave drawer; a beverage fridge; and space for cushioned stools with awning-stripe black webbed backs. The most dramatic view is through the opening in the striking black and gold Art Deco wallpapered dining room, which is centered directly on the black island and black-and-brass hood. Contemporary kitchens are the epitome of the sleek, minimalist layout. Characterized by dark wood or black cabinetry, fresh white countertops, and smooth stainless steel appliances, the contemporary kitchen is functional and sometimes artistic in nature.

In this kitchen remodel, the homeowners wanted a modern update with improved island functionality. To achieve their vision, we removed the existing island cabinets and replaced them with frameless cabinets from the Era series of the Kitchen Solvers Classic Collection in Basalt. We expanded the island's size and added custom metal legs to create a seating area at the end. The perimeter cabinets were refaced with Haze Super Matte slim shaker doors, featuring increased overlays and the removal of some mullions for a sleek, modern look. Once the cabinets were installed and refaced, we finished the space with a 3cm Vicostone Venatino Quartz countertop and a 4x12 Arctic Matte White backsplash tile with bright white grout. A new luxury vinyl plank floor completed the transformation, delivering the updated style the homeowners had envisioned.

Our clients came to us after purchasing their new home, wanting to update a few things to make it “theirs.” The master bathroom was very out of date, so that was their first priority and the largest part of the project. It had black galaxy granite with surrounding mirrors on all of the walls. They wanted to enlarge the shower, get rid of the huge step-up jacuzzi tub, and change the swing of the door to the closet and water closet. They also wanted all new cabinets and to create his and hers vanity sinks, if possible. We gutted the bathroom and started with a clean slate. Waypoint Shaker panel cabinets were installed and painted linen, with Super White Marble countertops. Payton Sconces in satin nickel were hung on either side of each vanity mirror. Mirabelle undermount vanity sinks were installed, finishing those off with sleek Brizo Virage faucets in brilliance brushed nickel. Capua Multi Perla ceramic tile was used on the shower walls, with the floor tile being Tesoro Nuvoloso Herringbone. A Mirabelle brushed nickel, square, custom showerhead and a Vilamonte brushed nickel handle were the hardware used in their new shower. We customized bookcases, changed out the carpet for hardwood, and added gorgeous furniture, lighting and decor. We also modernized and updated the foyer with statement lighting and sleek new railings. The homeowners absolutely love their new space that is now completely functional, comfortable, and welcoming to friends and family.

Remnant counter quartzite was used as a highlight in the master shower. Super low profile trench drain disappears under the bench seat. Tile-look vinyl plan flooring abuts for a sleek curbless entry.

The bedroom had super heavy drapery that darkened the room and took up too much space. In addition, a wood-burning fireplace encroached farther than was desirable. We switched this out to electric (who wants the hassle of a wood-burning fireplace in the bedroom?!) and designed a clean and modern surround and mantle with a flat, more minimal presence in the room. This bright, dreamy master bedroom features comfortable, warm details and sleek, modern design choices. We elevated the space with new furniture from RH, handsome window treatments, and newly appointed artwork for a bright and cheerful room that exudes comfort. It's the perfect environment to unwind, read a good book, and get a good night's sleep.

Interior Designer: MOTIV Interiors LLC Photographer: Sam Angel Photography Design Challenge: This 8 year-old boy and girl were outgrowing their existing setup and needed to update their rooms with a plan that would carry them forward into middle school and beyond. In addition to gaining storage and study areas, could these twins show off their big personalities? Absolutely, we said! MOTIV Interiors tackled the rooms of these youngsters living in Nashville's 12th South Neighborhood and created an environment where the dynamic duo can learn, create, and grow together for years to come. Design Solution: In his room, we wanted to continue the feature wall fun, but with a different approach. Since our young explorer loves outer space, being a boy scout, and building with legos, we created a dynamic geometric wall that serves as the backdrop for our young hero’s control center. We started with a neutral mushroom color for the majority of the walls in the room, while our feature wall incorporated a deep indigo and sky blue that are as classic as your favorite pair of jeans. We focused on indoor air quality and used Sherwin Williams’ Duration paint in a satin sheen, which is a scrubbable/no-VOC coating. We wanted to create a great reading corner, so we placed a comfortable denim lounge chair next to the window and made sure to feature a self-portrait created by our young client. For night time reading, we included a super-stellar floor lamp with white globes and a sleek satin nickel finish. Metal details are found throughout the space (such as the lounge chair base and nautical desk clock), and lend a utilitarian feel to the room. In order to balance the metal and keep the room from feeling too cold, we also snuck in woven baskets that work double-duty as decorative pieces and functional storage bins. The large north-facing window got the royal treatment and was dressed with a relaxed roman shade in a shiitake linen blend. We added a fabulous fabric trim from F. Schumacher and echoed the look by using the same fabric for the bolster on the bed. Royal blue bedding brings a bit of color into the space, and is complimented by the rich chocolate wood tones seen in the furniture throughout. Additional storage was a must, so we brought in a glossy blue storage unit that can accommodate legos, encyclopedias, pinewood derby cars, and more! Comfort and creativity converge in this space, and we were excited to get a big smile when we turned it over to its new commander.

Inspiration for a bedroom remodel in Chicago

It’s no surprise these Hanover clients reached out to Cathy and Ed of Renovisions for design and build services as they wanted a local professional bath specialist to turn their plain builder-grade bath into a luxurious handicapped accessible master bath. Renovisions had safety and universal design in mind while creating this customized two-person super shower and well-appointed master bath so their clients could escape to a special place to relax and energize their senses while also helping to conserve time and water as it is used simultaneously by them. This completely water proofed spacious 4’x8’ walk-in curb-less shower with lineal drain system and larger format porcelain tiles was a must have for our senior client –with larger tiles there are less grout lines, easier to clean and easier to maneuver using a walker to enter and exit the master bath. Renovisions collaborated with their clients to design a spa-like bath with several amenities and added conveniences with safety considerations. The bench seat that spans the width of the wall was a great addition to the shower. It’s a comfortable place to sit down and stretch out and also to keep warm as electric mesh warming materials were used along with a programmable thermostat to keep these homeowners toasty and cozy! Careful attention to all of the details in this master suite created a peaceful and elegant environment that, simply put, feels divine. Adding details such as the warming towel rack, mosaic tiled shower niche, shiny polished chrome decorative safety grab bars that also serve as towel racks and a towel rack inside the shower area added a measure of style. A stately framed mirror over the pedestal sink matches the warm white painted finish of the linen storage cabinetry that provides functionality and good looks to this space. Pull-down safety grab bars on either side of the comfort height high-efficiency toilet was essential to keep safety as a top priority. Water, water everywhere for this well deserving couple – multiple shower heads enhances the bathing experience for our client with mobility issues as 54 soft sprays from each wall jet provide a soothing and cleansing effect – a great choice because they do not require gripping and manipulating handles yet provide a sleek look with easy cleaning. The thermostatic valve maintains desired water temperature and volume controls allows the bather to utilize the adjustable hand-held shower on a slide-bar- an ideal fixture to shower and spray down shower area when done. A beautiful, frameless clear glass enclosure maintains a clean, open look without taking away from the stunning and richly grained marble-look tiles and decorative elements inside the shower. In addition to its therapeutic value, this shower is truly a design focal point of the master bath with striking tile work, beautiful chrome fixtures including several safety grab bars adding aesthetic value as well as safety benefits.
