Historic New York City Townhouse | Renovation by Brian O'Keefe Architect, PC, with Interior Design by Richard Keith Langham

This award-winning and intimate cottage was rebuilt on the site of a deteriorating outbuilding. Doubling as a custom jewelry studio and guest retreat, the cottage’s timeless design was inspired by old National Parks rough-stone shelters that the owners had fallen in love with. A single living space boasts custom built-ins for jewelry work, a Murphy bed for overnight guests, and a stone fireplace for warmth and relaxation. A cozy loft nestles behind rustic timber trusses above. Expansive sliding glass doors open to an outdoor living terrace overlooking a serene wooded meadow.

Located in the Langley Fork Historic District in McLean, Virginia, this residence was designed to speak to the formal massing seen in the existing neighborhood fabric of stately traditional homes. The simplicity and clean lines of the stucco and limestone façade blends harmoniously with its surroundings. Traditional forms, interjected with modern twists, create a tension that carries throughout the design, creating a home that feels warm and familiar while clean and distilled at the same time. What a difference it made to take that wall down! We had to put a large beam in the ceiling and support it in the sides walls with metal columns all the way down to the basement to make this structurally sound.

Enclosed dining room - large contemporary dark wood floor and black floor enclosed dining room idea in New York with black walls and no fireplace

The project started with an open kitchen floor plan with a connected living and dining room. We worked closely with Aspen Leaf to design the cabinets, layout and finishes including a shimmering backsplash of Ann Sacks 1x2-inch tile, and a dramatic, custom-crafted hood.

db Landscaping LLC is a Landscape design NH company serving the New England region in particular the New Hampshire areas of Lake Sunapee, Lake Winnipesaukee, the seacoast including Portsmouth and Rye, Hanover, Concord, New London, Newbury, Warner, Sunapee, Hanover, Lebanon and Bow. In Vermont, we serve the central part of the state and area resort towns including Norwich, Quechee, Woodstock, Weathersfield, Stowe and Ludlow to name a few. We are dedicated to landscape design excellence, utilizing the latest in Architectural Landscape design ideas and proven installation techniques.

The project is a series of mural panels painted in the artist’s studio and installed on all walls of a dining room. The imagery is of soft landscape with classical architectural elements, loosely based on an Arcadian 18th century French wallpaper scenic.
The murals are painted in grisaille, a traditional technique which uses a monochromatic palette of grey to create depth. In this case the artist used the soft painterly style of Fragonard and Boucher to create the lush landscape in the same grey palette. The freshness and vitality of the brushwork distinguishes these murals from printed wall covering. Silver leaf detailing on the pilasters adds a luminous effect.
This project won an Acanthus Award for excellence from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art in 2014.
