Inspiration for a modern dining room remodel in Chicago

Jennifer goes on to explain, "When I decorate my home I don't feel I have a style. I believe what ever you put in your home is what you should love, and that way it creates its own style ... I've been collecting for so long that a lot of my treasures have come together because I love them and eventually it will all make sense. I don't like one 'way'; that's why all my rooms are different." The dining table was found in an old flower shop. Originally it was a worktable with very tall legs, so Raymond and Jennifer cut them down to modify it for its current use. The chairs received Jennifer's creative touch as well. Purchased at a garage sale for $1 each, they are originally from an ice cream parlor in the basement of the historical Higbee's Company department store. Maximizing the functionality of this space, and coordinating the new kitchen with the beautiful remodel completed previously by the client were the two most important aspects of this project. The existing spaces are elegantly decorated with an open plan, dark hardwood floors, and natural stone accents. The new, lighter, more open kitchen flows beautifully into the client’s existing dining room space. Satin nickel hardware blends with the stainless steel appliances and matches the satin nickel details throughout the home. The fully integrated refrigerator next to the narrow pull-out pantry cabinet, take up less visual weight than a traditional stainless steel appliance and the two combine to provide fantastic storage. The glass cabinet doors and decorative lighting beautifully highlight the client’s glassware and dishes. The Ikon Drive dining table designed by Philip Jackson is setting a new standard for modern, urban living spaces. This innovative showpiece combines wood, glass and metal to create a stunning table that will enhance any dining room with unmatched sophistication. The unique base is made of extra clear tempered glass, with a decorative beam that comes in graphite or walnut. The solid walnut top comes in three fixed sizes for the Ikon table, and the Ikon Drive comes in two extendable sizes. The gorgeous walnut top has natural edges that only add beauty and detail to this amazing table.

Adding a cheerful turquoise rug to anchor the oversized dining room, we brought the river view to the other side of the apartment. That Hudson River view is a feature we want the buyers to remember as they flow through the unit.

Inspiration for a contemporary dark wood floor kitchen/dining room combo remodel in Santa Barbara with white walls and no fireplace

The Tice Residences replace a run-down and aging duplex with two separate, modern, Santa Barbara homes. Although the unique creek-side site (which the client’s original home looked toward across a small ravine) proposed significant challenges, the clients were certain they wanted to live on the lush “Riviera” hillside. The challenges presented were ultimately overcome through a thorough and careful study of site conditions. With an extremely efficient use of space and strategic placement of windows and decks, privacy is maintained while affording expansive views from each home to the creek, downtown Santa Barbara and Pacific Ocean beyond. Both homes appear to have far more openness than their compact lots afford. The solution strikes a balance between enclosure and openness. Walls and landscape elements divide and protect two private domains, and are in turn, carefully penetrated to reveal views. Both homes are variations on one consistent theme: elegant composition of contemporary, “warm” materials; strong roof planes punctuated by vertical masses; and floating decks. The project forms an intimate connection with its setting by using site-excavated stone, terracing landscape planters with native plantings, and utilizing the shade provided by its ancient Riviera Oak trees. 2012 AIA Santa Barbara Chapter Merit Award Jim Bartsch Photography
