The owner of this rather traditional Portland home wanted a more contemporary look, and a backdrop to show off his stunningly beautiful garden. Besides those stipulations, the color selection took into account certain existing features that were to remain untouched, and also the colorful transformation of the gardens during the course of the seasons. It's amazing what a little paint can do, isn't it?

This Tonka Bay home was built in 1956 by commercial architect Jackson Griswold. The home was practically untouched until his death in 2009. His Heirs started remodeling the home in 2010 but exhausted their budget and soon ran out of the desire to finish the home. The house was purchased by a developer in late 2011 and Excelsior Design Group was commissioned in 2012 to design a combination remodel/restoration of this Frank Lloyd Wright inspired rambler

Characterized by contrast, parts of each board are planed down to reveal the raw quality of old growth timber underneath the weathering, while parts are left untouched to display the hard-earned antique finish. By simultaneously displaying both the aged and the original state of each board, this contrast celebrates both the beauty created by decades of exposure and the quality of timber it took to last.

A breathtaking hilltop view of the Pacific was the reference point for this dramatic landscape transformation. The Campion Walker team utilized succulents, water falls, textured concrete and steel to integrate the house and the raw untouched land surrounding it.

We chose to reskin the house with a black and white stucco exterior along with meranti wood siding, durable and rich in color, to highlight the architectural angles of the home. The project was a massive feat of engineering as it involved building on a slope of fill that required steel piles driven 20 feet down to support a new cantilevered indoor/outdoor living space. No detail was left untouched, from design and construction to furnishing the finished spaces.
Nestled amongst the treetops, the property begged for access to the outdoors. We removed a small, difficult to access, dilapidated deck and created a huge covered indoor/outdoor space off the dining room and kitchen complete with sky lights and heaters to dine outside year round.
