If you’re going to host a party or have a few friends over for happy hour, you better make sure your cabinets are fully stocked with the right kinds of bar glasses. You don't want to be caught serving a cocktail in a beer stein or vise versa. Each drink has a proper vessel to be served in for good reasons, so be prepared for any drink guests throw your way, and get your bar glassware in tip-top shape with at least a few of each of the following types:
• Beer glasses: Pour your pilsner or lager into a specially designed pilsner glass, but keep your other beers happy in a pint glass, beer stein or mug.
• Shot glasses: No, these aren’t miniature mugs for beer. The thick, heavy bottom on your shot glass keeps it from breaking when you slam it onto the counter after downing a shot of Jaeger, mezcal or Patron.
• Whiskey glasses: If you’ve got whiskey in the jar-o, you can serve it up in one of these. They’re also useful for serving single shots of liquor if you don’t have any shot glasses available.
• Cocktail glasses: Martinis, margaritas, highballs and good old Collins cocktails can be served up in a variety of glasses. Of course, your martini glass is readily identifiable, and you can also use it to serve a sidecar, daiquiri, Manhattan or a Brooklyn. On the other end of the spectrum, your highball glass features a tall, thin shape and heavy bottom. It’s used to serve your gin and tonic, plus any other paired drinks like scotch and soda or bourbon and ginger.
• Brandy snifter: The short stature of this glass is perfect for enjoying a quality cup of brandy. The wide part of the glass allows the aroma of your libation to rise to the narrowest part of the glass where you can enjoy it every time you take a sip.
