What size coffee table?

We need help picking coffee table size. We have 2, 88" sofas and the 2 chairs. What you see in the room now is covered cardboard boxes to try and get an idea of size. If we do square, to make it useable, it would have to be 55" or large. We could do a very large rectangle (in front of couch facing TV) and ottomans in front of fireplace to "balance" room. Either way the table will be a custom made farmhouse style table. Thoughts?

I would opt for a cocktail ottoman instead.

Or an ottoman with sliding bridge table.

The size you are replicating looks just right.

So you like large square? What if square is more than 18" from all seating? Isn't that considered too far from seating? Is okay not to center the square? Fabric ottoman is not really an option for family, two small grandchildren and large family gatherings.

Sorry new to this site, comment directed to Beverly :)

I love the fabric ottoman. You can use the second and darker fabric one if keeping it clean is your concern. The great thing is you can use it to sit on as well as use it for putting items on it. Put trays on it for setting items on it. Actually, it's better for kids because if they bump into it (and you know they will!), they won't hurt themselves.

Move the brown sofa that is facing the TV under the window and put a long table behind it with 3 high stools, plants and books and a lamp for the winter. Natural light is better for reading and you can have snacks there and swivel to see the garden.
Place the two white chairs opposite the TV and bring the other brown sofa up closer with enough room to walk through. Put the end table at the other end of the brown sofa. Buy 4 square ottomans with flip lids so you can store nice throws for the sofas and use the tray for drinks/plates and is easy to clean. Buy a round coffee table for the two white chairs that has a shelf underneath for storage of books. Add some nice decorative pillows that have covers that come of to wash, in greens teal white and add a touch of fern leaves and birds in the design. Add a large green or blue glass with pampas grass in the corner by the TV. Buy a moving tea cart in a sturdy wood for holding popcorn/real napkins/ glass jugs of tea/juice and ice buckets. Keep round coffee table center of attraction for home cooking and use the long table behind the sofa for extra décor or candles or lighting or seasonal theme or kids that want to play games and computers as it can be faced to the window and they are in view but not bored or part of the adult scene. Buy a nice round rug for under the coffee table.

I think the size looks ok from what I can see. I would also consider a table with shelving at the bottom for additional storage for books and games etc. for the family:)

Cano, we have a long sofa table in front of the window behind the chairs. The chairs are large and when placed facing the t.v. It gets too tight for walkways. The couches are a taupe/gray and we have a slate blue/gray 8 x 10 rug coming. We have already committed to a furniture maker for the table. Although we have a deposit down on a custom table, we may be able to cancel. He was just waiting for dimensions. Thank you for all suggestions.

Thank you Mark, the second image is the style we are looking at. So square you think, not oversized rectangle?

I do like a square coffee table much better than a rectangular one.

18" is just a general guideline - place your table where it will be most comfortable for your shins. So long as guests can reach it to place a cup down on, all is well.

Move the furniture first and view the space form the TV, the sofas and the whole room. There should be moveable space all around the TV area. Finding a round coffee table is tricky, and make sure it is a wood that creates a creative look and is decorative to your colour scheme. Round tables induce movement, and look nice with round plates, tiered cake plates and flowers in the middle or a lazysusan. Height should be the same as the seating height or a few inches more, not lower, unless you are using an added tray to move about and diameter should complement the room, most probably 3 feet in diameter for the coffee table.

Cocktail ottoman can be covered in a washable microfiber fabric or leather.

My concern is that a 55" wood coffee table will look like a dance floor.

55" square from RH. Lots of 60" square tables at RH.
