We bought and renovated an old house, and now we're in and need to make finishing touches, including dressing the windows. This room below was formerly a bedroom and now is our dining room which is wide open to the kitchen.

We took great care to restore the window trim and add mouldings, so now we need to add window treatments for privacy but I'm stumped! I don't think drapes are right because they would cover too much of the pretty woodwork, plus that doesn't feel right given the proximity to the kitchen (not to mention our kids' grubby hands!). My thoughts:

- I love the look of shutters but 1) expensive and 2) the windows are angled so it would be very busy if we were to ever open them. Half shutters only? Not insulating enough for New England hot summers and cold winters?

- Wood blinds in white. The wooden slats kind of look like shutters, but I can't decide.

- Top down/bottom up honeycomb shades. Too plain or the right look to do the privacy trick but also not take over as a design statement? They have the added insulating benefit. What color? Neutral?

- Roman shades. I love these but am overwhelmed by the fabric choices and the commitment.

- Solar shades? We have one in the kitchen that I love but that feels too "casual" for this side of the space.

For reference, the walls are Stonington Gray, and this is the kitchen, 180 degrees from the perspective the DR photo is taken from. The big kitchen window has a solar shade that matches the counter.
