You will want to cover the entire perimeter of your home. Any opening that a potential thief can get into without ladder. Double up on the backyard area so if they try and take one camera out you have them on the other. In general the surveillance system and security system should be designed together to protect your home.

One piece of advice I can offer is that it is best to set cameras so that each is seen by at least one other camera. This prevents camera theft as well as strengthening the security.

I have also found that having at least one camera easily visible from the street is a deterrent to intruders.
