I am not a good color picker - help with kitchen cabinets/backsplash

Help- I stink with colors and backsplash ideas. We just added a new island, changed the counters to quartzite- Taj Mahal, and made a corner desk area into a bar area by adding a double drawer fridge a new cabinet. (The cabinet wasn’t supposed to be painted but it came this way). It’s a very dark kitchen during the day bc it only gets morning sun. Should we paint the cabinets the same as the island? Do white? Do something else? Backsplash - stone? It’s more a brown gray but the picture shows more blue. Thank you!!!

This space is a mixture of different things lacking a functional task lighting plan on top. The orange in my monitor floor is a major design component that I'd refinish or replace in my plan. The step-by-step procedure you're outlying requires a solid overall goal to follow. Find out the color code for the white on your island. If the maker doesn't know, I'd take a door into Sherwin Williams and have them analyze it for matching or choosing complimentary colors. Post a closeup of your counter color. A lighting plan for leds can include undercabinet as well as high output recessed cans placed 6" in from the edge of the counter as work zone task lighting. 450 lumens at the counter surface is a minimum.

Yes to painting the dark wood cabinets in the same color as the island, especially since you said there is very little natural light in the room. It will totally change the look of your kitchen.. And wait until AFTER the dark cabinets are painted before picking a backsplash.

That new cabinet and the island cabinets really don't coordinate with the original cabinet style, do they. I don't think paint will change the fact that you have very different door styles.

Looks like you need a soft white that best compliments with the Taj counters. I would look for that and then have all cabinets and island done the same. Need to be mindful of the white that's already going on (door and trim nearby and the ceiling). Hold off on choosing a backsplash until after cabinets are redone.

I think I would pause and look over the budget and do a couple things before the bigger paint job. The island will bring focus forward away from the perimeter ...a good thing..... your natural inclination is to get on w painting. But as mentioned an improved lighting plan including pendants for the great island would be the best step right now. are you getting stools ? ..pick those out.....youll be rewarded for the enjoyable island set up [center of space] ..... Then I would actually remove the far 3 wall cabinets on the stove wall where you took out desk......a great opportunity to differentiate that end of the run. Shelves or glass doors if you want o keep cabinets...really nice. Then w these few adjustments move on to the color pallette and backsplash picks. Before painting is the time for strategic tweaks Good Luck.

Paint does not make a space brighter only lighting does that . I like LED 4000K in kitchens I do under cabinet, island and overall all on seperate switches since I do not like dimmers in kitchens The cabinet color of course needs to change since dark on uppers is never a great look. I like the color of the island but before doing any more to the space deal with the storage issue . A nice pretty kitchen with counters filled with stuff is never a nice look.Any stool you get IMO needs to be avery low back where the whole stool can go under the overhang since that area is tight for stools so close to the dining table I love colored stools they add a bit of fun and allow you to add accents in a color . This is my kitchen and I love the pop of orange in an otherwise very simple scheme . I do not like your mismatched cabinet style beside the fridge drawers . If possible I would do the backsplash in the counter material and please no fan in a DR or kitchen and a good hood for venting the stove too.

The pale gray island color reminds me of a metal office cabinet. The color is off for this room IMO.

I would downplay it by painting out all the pale gray to a deep Charcoal or Espresso so it recedes visually and the original cabs will pop in their current color.

Here is an Espresso island with orangey floors and light countertop like yours.

I'm confused. If the cabinets weren't supposed to be painted, why did they get installed? Is that a finished paint or is it possible that it is a primer and you still need to paint them?

At this point, you will need to paint at least the rest of the base cabinets the same color. I would probably do the uppers the same as well at this stage I don't think a 2 color kitchen would work.

The color seems ok with your floor but doesn't work with the wall paint ( at least on my monitor ) . I would wait until all of that is sorted out before worrying about a backsplash.

You may also want to add some pretty pendants over the island.

Hi - we just moved in and the fans are everywhere, that is on the list to remove and change the lighting above the island and the sitting area, but we wanted to get the other things done first and that all at once. :) we were dealing with a deadline where the counters were getting installed so had to just get them installed and then we figured we were going to have to paint it anyway. Based on this advice, my husband is thinking either 1) keep the island the same and do the base cabinets the color of the trim (Benjamin moore swiss coffee) which is a warm white or 2) paint everything the same color with the warm gray, for some reason it is showing bluer than what it is. It sounds very mixed on the idea of doing the base the warm gray and the uppers maybe a warm white? And I definitely got the message to hold off on the backsplash till all painting is done.

If you like the way the Taj Mahal counter tops look with the paint color on the island, then paint all the cabinets that color. The island color looks fairly light, so there's not going to be enough contrast with white to make it worth it.

Personally I'd replace your black refrigerator and cooking appliances with stainless steel like your new fridge drawers. They are going to stand out (and not in a good way) after you paint the cabinets the light gray.

YES! We have that on the list as well to make it consistent. It's an old house so lots of things happening.

This is super helpful, I really appreciate it. We had a family death right as we’re moving in so so many things had to sort of be done very quickly and so all these feedback is super helpful.

What abundant cabinet space! Great kitchen.

Your new counters, island, and floor look fine together. Don't mess with what you can see in person and already works: Paint all of the rest of your cabinets - uppers and lowers, the same as your island.

New hardware - nickel or chrome will add more light/shine to the space.

Differentiate the island from the other cabinets by using great stools (with backs) and a focal point light, as in this Serena and Lily pic. You don't have to go as dramatic as this pic but you can see how the island stands out even though it is the same color as the other cabinets.

@lisedv black paint would help with the cabinet style mis-match until all the cabinets can be replaced. Great job!

If you are going to paint all of the cabinets including the island, then maybe do 2 colors, if you like that look.

I would also consider taking 1 or 2 of the wall cabinets and have the center panel cut out and put some glass in them. It could even be a frosted glass or textured if you don't want to see inside. There is a lot of cabinets, would be nice to break it up a bit.

    Good luck

    Really pretty kitchen.

To me it would look best with all the cabinets the same color.

I like the way the island color contrasts with the floor.
