Simple, clean. This walk-in closet, though large, had design challenges that required detailed planning. A drop down attic stair access, safes that secured to studs and shelves, doors that swing into the space. The results! Lucite doors cover the shoes which are out of the way when the stairs are down. The island also does not block the stairs and still has a bench to sit while selecting clothes for the day. The tall mirrored panels cover folded clothes on shelves and allow for a final check before heading out for the day!

After demolition, we were able to carefully modify the original concrete block base structure, then install the striking new stainless steel elements, including a commercial grade 32" grill with rotisserie and Sear Zone, and 2-drawer + door unit below, and double doors to access an ample storage space. And, the new vent hood above the grill assured no more black 'soot marks' trailing up the back wall. Finally, my client picked out a granite species that rendered the project a beautiful 'work of art,' like the rest of their lovely home!

When this Chester Springs family came to Craftsworth Construction, they had a vision: transform an unfinished basement into a true extension of their home — a space where they could entertain, relax, host game nights, and still have room for the kids. What we delivered exceeded every expectation.
This full basement finish spans multiple defined zones, each with its own purpose and personality, yet all flowing seamlessly together in an open-concept layout. Every detail was intentional. Every material was selected for both beauty and durability. The result is one of the most complete and well-executed basement transformations we've built in Chester County.
The Wet Bar & Kitchenette
The centerpiece of the entertainment side of the basement is a fully custom wet bar and kitchenette that rivals an upstairs kitchen in both form and function. Dark charcoal shaker cabinets with brushed brass pulls line the walls, framing a dramatic white quartzite stone backsplash that runs full height. Live-edge floating shelves add warmth and texture against the stone. A stainless undermount sink sits beneath a matte black and gold pull-down faucet, and the countertops throughout are a gorgeous veined quartz. Appliances include a full-size stainless French door refrigerator, dishwasher, wine cooler, and a microwave drawer built into the island. A large waterfall island with seating for four anchors the space and separates the working kitchen from the entertainment area. A dramatic hand-hewn wood beam runs overhead, tying the rustic and modern elements together.
The Dry Bar & TV Bar
On the opposite side of the open space sits a sleek dry bar with a butcher block top and dark charcoal base, perfectly positioned in front of the media wall. Four swivel bar stools with wood backs face the TV, creating a natural watch-the-game setup that's as functional as it is good-looking. This bar serves as the connector between the lounge and the game room, keeping the flow of the space intuitive and social.
The Media Lounge
The living area features a custom slatted wood accent wall with a large wall-mounted TV, in-wall speakers, and a soundbar — all framed by the warm natural tone of the slat panels against the deep charcoal accent wall. Brass wall sconces flank the TV wall, and a large sectional with a round wood coffee table creates a cozy, cinema-quality hangout space. A black sliding barn door with frosted glass panels leads to the fitness room, adding an industrial-modern touch while keeping the space flexible.
The Game Room
Dedicated to fun, the game room features a full-size pool table, dart board cabinet, cue rack, and wall-to-wall sports memorabilia including a framed Eagles jersey. A corner L-shaped floating wood shelf wraps the back wall, perfect for drinks and gear during a game. The deep charcoal paint and recessed lighting keep the vibe right.
The Bathroom
The basement bathroom is a full showstopper. A dark wood vanity with quartz countertop and brass pulls sits beneath a gold-framed rectangular mirror flanked by brass sconces. The frameless glass walk-in shower is tiled floor to ceiling in vertical white subway tile with a built-in niche and a brass thermostatic valve. A vertical shiplap accent wall behind the toilet adds a designer touch that elevates the entire room.
The Fitness Room
Accessed through the barn door from the lounge, the fitness room is clean and bright with its own wall-mounted TV, recessed lighting, and egress window. It's private enough to feel like a dedicated gym but connected enough to stay part of the home.
The Kids' Playroom
No detail was overlooked — even the space beneath the stairs was converted into a functional kids' playroom with built-in shelving, a Lego table, and a chalkboard easel. A smart use of square footage that the whole family can enjoy.
The Pantry
A pair of oversized custom barn-style double doors in matte black open to reveal a full walk-in pantry with white built-in shelving. Closed, the doors look like a bold design feature. Open, they reveal serious organized storage.

The client approached us as he had a property that benefited from an elevated position and water views over the Georges River. The current home needed a change to the layout, additional bedrooms and living spaces that captured the magnificent views and catering for their retirement. The existing property had a garage, rumpus room and two terrace’s within the front setback along the boundary which needed to remain as part of the proposal as it would not be permissible to reinstate them under the current planning rules. The floor plan of the development is meticulous in providing for the needs of the client. As seniors in their 70’s we were keen to provide easy access on a steep sloping block. The driveway, lift and elevation of the main floor level adjacent to the rear garden has achieved this brilliantly. Enjoyment of the stunning views over the river was of paramount importance and this has been elegantly achieved. There are great views from all three terraces, the entire upper floor, including the master bedroom, the lift, the rear patio and rear garden. The highlight of this home, however, is the enthusiastic manner which, both the client and designer approached the picturesque views. Large double glazed windows and doors optimally located provide wonderful thermal efficiency and a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors whilst ensuring privacy from neighbouring sites. The light and airy feeling in this space is complemented with the natural coastal finishes prevalent throughout the home.

As readers of architect/designer Katie Hutchison’s book The New Cottage (Taunton Press 2018), these homeowners approached KHS about designing a second home in Westerly, Rhode Island. Theirs is a double-long lot with street frontage on both ends, a short walk from the water. In addition to the new house, their wish list included a new lap pool (with associated patio) and new garage.
Aesthetically, they were looking to create an informally elegant, human-scaled family compound, engaged with the site and connected with the outdoors. They further requested sustainable features/systems and low-maintenance materials.
In response, KHS proposed an ell-shaped house that wraps two sides of a lap pool/patio. A porch-fronted two-story gabled component faces the main street and is flanked by the one-story primary suite in one leg of the ell and the one-story kitchen and rear porches in the other leg of the ell. The house is an efficient +/- 2800 square-feet and contains four bedrooms and three and one half bathrooms.
A salt-box inspired garage is detached so as not to increase the building massing. It helps shape outdoor spaces and doesn’t block daylight and direct exterior access from the house. It faces the secondary street. Driveways off both streets offer different modes of arrival.
The south-facing roof of the two-story volume – which includes three bedrooms and two baths – and the south-facing one-story roof of the kitchen and rear porches, as well as the south-facing roof of the garage support 47 photovoltaic solar panels, providing the bulk of the property’s electric power.
Two oversized exterior folding glass doors off the living area and kitchen blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors, welcoming abundant daylight, views of the pool and patio, as well as summer breezes. An airy living/dining area includes a long custom window seat and borders a semi-open kitchen beneath a cathedral ceiling. Living area built-in shelving frames a TV and surrounds a modern efficient pellet stove.
A cheerful interior palette of soft hues features pops of color, Scandinavian wallpapers, custom textiles, and a dash of warm wood accents in the form of counters, built-in desks, and custom furnishings. On the exterior, natural shingles side the main volume and environmentally friendly and durable Boral board-and-batten side the one-story components and garage, communicating a legible hierarchy of spaces. The overall effect is a breezy, crisp New England home, pool patio, and garage for today’s living.

Set on a narrow lakefront parcel defined by tight setbacks and limited hardscape allowance, this modern cabin demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform restriction into possibility. Carefully composed to preserve privacy while opening fully toward the water, the home feels both expansive and intimate—an elevated retreat grounded in its landscape.
Though modest in footprint, the residence lives generously. Four bedrooms are tucked efficiently within the plan, including a light-filled quilting studio that reflects the homeowners’ creative life. Each bedroom opens onto its own private balcony, offering moments of pause and perspective with views stretching across lake and countryside.
The upper level also includes a family room, providing a quiet gathering space removed from the activity below. From here, the home’s vertical volume becomes apparent, as daylight pours down through a dramatic two-story space framed by glass facing the lake.
At the center of the home, a custom steel-and-wood plank stair acts as both circulation and sculpture. Rising through the double-height volume, it leads the eye upward to a tall Nelson cigar lamp suspended above—an intentional moment of drama and delight.
The main floor is designed around connection and flow. Kitchen, dining, and living areas exist as one continuous space, unified by light, views, and material warmth. A 12-foot-long island anchors the kitchen, serving as the natural gathering place for morning coffee, family meals, and summertime buffet-style entertaining. When fully opened, large folding accordion glass doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, allowing the screened porch to become a true extension of the living space.
Function is carefully layered throughout the plan. A mudroom entry from the tucked-under two-car garage includes a powder room and utility closet, while a generous entry closet provides essential storage and has been dimensioned to accommodate a future elevator.
Designed intentionally for aging in place, the home incorporates zero-threshold access from the garage, wide halls and doorways, reinforced wall blocking for future grab bars, and infrastructure for a future elevator—ensuring long-term comfort without compromising design.
Clad in dark painted board-and-batten siding, the exterior minimizes visual scale and allows the home to recede quietly into the landscape. Recessed balconies and façade elements are wrapped in warm wood-look siding, adding depth and contrast while bringing warmth into the interior. At night, light spills softly from within, and the cabin glows along the shoreline—welcoming, calm, and enduring.

Our clients needed a new kitchen that would work for their growing family. They knew an open concept would allow for the most interaction during their busy days, and they needed the design to incorporate a lot of storage. The features include a seamlessly integrated coffee station, a spot in the corner cabinetry for the microwave, an island that includes a steam oven, a paper towel holder and a pull-out trash bin, and a custom-designed vent hood that accommodates the 48-inch Wolf range. The cabinetry continues into the bar area but stands out due to its stunning antiqued mirror backsplash, which creates a focal point. Placing an ice maker and a beverage fridge in this area makes it easily accessible and out of the cook’s way — perfect for entertaining and for their kids to grab their own drinks.
The large island now allows for the family to spend a lot of time together comfortably whether cooking, eating or doing homework. Although the laundry room was reduced, its new layout makes for a better functioning, tidy space. Another must-have for a bustling family is the message center hidden away in the hallway. Its design allows for storage of keys, paperwork, calendars and more. In order to open up the staircase, we removed the original bulky landing that blocked views and replaced it with a more open one that includes decorative newel posts and wrought iron balusters that were more in line with the new design style of the main floor.
Our clients are thrilled with the final renovation.

This beautiful shaker home would sit comfortably on many sites, particularly those with a view. The main floor offers a wide variety of inviting areas to gather, including a large combined kitchen, dining, and living area, a cozy hearth room, and an expansive deck off the back of the house. Two separate upper levels provide space for sleeping, the quarters above the garage acting as a guest apartment. Extra bunk beds, billiards, seating areas and access to more outdoor living can be found on the lower level, making entertaining easy.

This bathroom takes the desire to "age in place" to glamorous levels. So often, hospital grade products come to mind when thinking of an ADA compliant space. This renovation removed the existing tub and replaced it with a large shower. The zero-height threshold and double glass doors allow for a standard sized PVC wheelchair. A built-in bench gives someone who doesn't require a wheelchair a place to sit. The linear drain along the seat gives a flat floor with a slight pitch in one direction, rather than a drain in the center of the space which would need the floor to be pitched in four directions. The handheld shower is perfect for a sitting bather or care-giver. The pedestal sink with two legs instead of a central center stand gives leg room for someone in a wheelchair. And, as both owners of the home are fully able bodied now, behind the walls is blocking for future grab bars, if needed.

The patio level is raised to meet the family room threshold. To provide access to the entire back yard, these boulder steps were installed. The modular block retaining wall near the water has a plant bed for the family vegetable garden. The afternoon shines brightly on that garden.

Our customers came to us with a desire to open up their kitchen into the dining and living rooms. They wanted an open concept to make their home more comfortable and easy to get around in when their grandchildren came over to visit. We were able to take down two walls and leave a post where the island is currently located. We were also able to continue and match the hardwood floors in the kitchen. The ginger stained cabinets and the under cabinet lighting add a warmth to the kitchen. The staggered wall cabinets with the large crown mounding added an interesting touch. And lastly the washing machine was moved from the basement into the kitchen for easier access to our customers who have a hard time walking up and down the staircase. The customers love their new kitchen and enjoy spending time with their family.
