Movin on up from the tract homes of the Valley to the Ranch takes a shift in mindset, yet this couple also wanted to keep it real and practical for their growing family, house full of pets, and casual lifestyle. Inspired by a modern farmhouse aesthetic, this home was taken down to the bones and updated with a personal style of comfortable elegance while keeping the kids in mind.

This backyard has a lot going on, and that's a good thing. They've got a beautiful trellis with hammocks and outdoor furniture. Vines grow along the trellis, plants punctuate the landscape and a beautiful, red Modern-Shed entertainment room sits in the corner. "Come on in," it says. "I've got a TV, a sweet LEGO VW bus, and a comfy, cozy couch."

These four custom cedar raised beds were constructed at the Seattle Urban Farm Co headquarters and delivered, fully assembled, to the clients rooftop deck. Each of the four raised beds include a cold frame structure that sits 2ʼ above the raised bed with interchangeable south-angled panels: greenhouse paneling for winter and shade cloth covering for summer. This addition to the raised beds will allow the client to continue growing crops throughout the year in the unique microclimate of a roof, protecting crops from excess heat, cold, and wind. This small third bedroom in a 1950's North Vancouver home originally housed our growing interior design business. When we outgrew this 80 square foot space and moved to a studio across the street, I wondered what would become of this room with its lovely ocean view. As it turns out it evolved into a shared creative space for myself and my very artistic 7 year old daughter. In the spirit of Virginia Wolfe's "A Room of One's Own" this is a creative space where we are surrounded by some of our favourite things including vintage collectibles & furniture, artwork and craft projects, not to mention my all time favourite Cole and Son wallpaper. The design challenge was to enhance the square footage, flow and livability in this 1,442 sf 1930’s Tudor style brick house for a growing family of four. A two story 1,000 sf addition was the solution proposed by the design team at Advance Design Studio, Ltd. The new addition provided enough space to add a new kitchen and eating area with a butler pantry, a food pantry, a powder room and a mud room on the lower level, and a new master suite on the upper level. The family envisioned a bright and airy white classically styled kitchen accented with espresso in keeping with the 1930’s style architecture of the home. Subway tile and timely glass accents add to the classic charm of the crisp white craftsman style cabinetry and sparkling chrome accents. Clean lines in the white farmhouse sink and the handsome bridge faucet in polished nickel make a vintage statement. River white granite on the generous new island makes for a fantastic gathering place for family and friends and gives ample casual seating. Dark stained oak floors extend to the new butler’s pantry and powder room, and throughout the first floor making a cohesive statement throughout. Classic arched doorways were added to showcase the home’s period details. On the upper level, the newly expanded garage space nestles below an expansive new master suite complete with a spectacular bath retreat and closet space and an impressively vaulted ceiling. The soothing master getaway is bathed in soft gray tones with painted cabinets and amazing “fantasy” granite that reminds one of beach vacations. The floor mimics a wood feel underfoot with a gray textured porcelain tile and the spacious glass shower boasts delicate glass accents and a basket weave tile floor. Sparkling fixtures rest like fine jewelry completing the space. The vaulted ceiling throughout the master suite lends to the spacious feel as does the archway leading to the expansive master closet. Three raised beds make the most of limited growing space in this compact garden. I was invited to do the planting design for this compact hillside project after the hardscape was complete. The home is situated on a corner lot, and a number of very narrow beds and stepped planting arrows wrap the house in a "C" shape. The homeowner was looking for plantings that would be soft and inviting for her children, and welcome birds, bees, and butterflies to the garden. Kelly Greenwood

Soft purple and crisp white furniture give a fresh, playful look to this little girl's room. Functional accessories and practical decorations give a sweet touch that grows with the child. Featured in this photo is a Nearly Natural carnation arrangement. Add a pop of color without having to worry about allergies, upkeep and spills with faux florals.

When the neighbor expanded, the small, open courtyard became an extension of the neighbor's driveway. Southern Landscape designed and built a custom privacy trellis to shield the neighbor while creating an intimate retreat off the master bedroom. ,Asian jasmine climbs the trellis, while dianella, foxtail, and little gem magnolia highlight the custom water feature, all of which contributes to the quiet oasis.

Our homeowners were looking for a garden where they could sit by the fire, grow vegetable and hear the sound of water. Their home was new construction in a modern farmhouse style. We used gravel and concrete as paving. Board formed concrete firepit keeps it feeling modern. The vegetable beds supply season vegetables and herbs.

chadbourne + doss architects have designed a washroom in the historic Alderbrook Station Netshed. The exterior gapped boards are inspired by cracks of light in the netshed's historic board and batten siding that shrink and grow depending on the season.
