In approaching the task of form-making in this context, the Architect considered the surrounding vernacular architecture. The most distinct structures in the sparsely populated area are agricultural buildings -- barns and sheds. In the initial phase of the project, the living area was therefore conceived as an abstraction of the typical barn form. Alternately, the bedroom wing takes the form of the shed.

Country living with views of the mountains and the city. We took this beautiful piece of property and replaced the old, poorly built house with a 5 bedroom country style 5897 sq ft mansion. An amazing transformation, the architectural design was conceived specifically for this existing site so that the new home could be carefully and artistically slipped into the existing landscape. By keeping the best of the old and adding the best of the new, we made this close-in horse property the best it could be.

The owners knew they wanted to create spaces in their backyard that be useful and encourage them to be outside more often, but because their backyard space is so massive the scope and size of the project was initially difficult to define. After a few initial rounds of design, the project ended up creating a series of spaces near their house and pool rather than try to utilize the entirety of their yard.
The existing pool was situated in proximity (and almost entirely aligned) to a detached garage. The garage was perfectly useful for parking cars, but nothing special Architecturally and certainly not functionally associated with the pool. The cabana would have been too far away from the main home if it were located on the opposite side of pool and would have been too large and visually obtrusive if arrange to the side of the pool. The design of the cabana was conceived as an addition to the garage that more appropriately capped the end of the pool with an openable space that could be used for cooking, lounging in the shade poolside, or playing games in with the space itself. There wasn’t enough space between the garage and pool to contain all the uses they wanted, so an additional shade structure with a dining space and a fire pit with build-in benches was included to the project, located near their existing living room.
Board formed concrete walls were used as a common element between the shade structure and the cabana. The base used as a planter wall and back to the bench in the shade structure is maintained in the base of cabana to develop aesthetic cohesion between the two spaces. The cabana engages a build in bar to a series of folding glass walls for compact efficient use. The interior of the cabana had to maintain the existing garage roofline for structural stability, but the interior is vaulted to the highest extent possible. The interior of the vault is lined with wood to frame the space for visual clarity enhancing transparency.
A goal of the project was to make a vast backyard more useful at a walkable scale by creating outdoor spaces close to each other and the existing living areas in and around the home. Rather than attempt to encapsulate the entire backyard it creates density around the edges that look onto the backyard. Because the spaces engage with the existing conditions the space has become a much-used outdoor living space.

The New Hope first floor remodel was conceived to blend functionality with timeless beauty across key areas of the home including the kitchen, mudroom, music room, and powder room. The design team worked closely with the homeowners to ensure that every space was not only visually cohesive but also elevated with purpose-driven upgrades. The overall palette merges soft, natural tones with bold accents, warm metals, and rich textures, striking a balance between comfort and sophistication. With a focus on personalized use and performance, each room now supports the family’s lifestyle through intelligent design and custom detailing.

Built as an art studio and hang-out space, the Art Barn was conceived as a modern interpretation of a traditional 19th Century barn. Built with a traditional post-and-beam structure, the entire barn is organized as a three dimensional grid. The use of modern metal fins and pins, rather than the traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, allowed the posts to be much thinner than in traditional barns. These fins also provided a lateral stability that enabled the structure to be built without corner braces, the diagonal “dog-eared” beams normally seen in post-and-beam construction. The effect of these differences gives the structure a light, modern feel.
Solar panels and passive heating and cooling concepts were incorporated into the architecture-so, except for winter days without sun, the building stays comfortable temperature year-round with little active heating or cooling necessary. (It should be noted that the window wall and doors were not built by Art of Building).

LEED Certification Level: Platinum.
Desert Rain was conceived and constructed with meeting the imperatives of the Living Building Challenge, and LEED Platinum Certification as the ultimate goals. The Desert Rain Team has been involved in this process from day one. From design charettes and materials vetting to building deconstruction and pulling the entire compound and systems together we have all been there. This was an extremely challenging process and will not be entirely complete until the one-year audit period and ultimately full LBC and LEED certification is complete. Following is a partial list of the features of Desert Rain and other awards and accomplishments along the way.
-EPS Score of ZERO

Located in the heart of Montreal, Binôme is an architectural urban densification project built by Modulor. Composed of two distinct buildings connected by an inner courtyard, this new five-unit development stands out through its unique layout, architecture, and exceptional attention to detail. The construction required rigorous planning and precise technical execution, particularly due to major excavation work and underpinning of adjacent buildings. Such interventions in a dense urban environment demand specialized expertise and tight project management at every phase of the build.
Conceived as an income-generating property, the clients benefited from our strategic support to ensure the profitability, efficiency, and optimization of their investment. Modulor worked closely with the team at Appareil Architecture to bring to life a project of high architectural integrity.
Binôme’s architecture draws inspiration from the area's industrial past: clean volumes, red brick, generous openings reminiscent of former workshops, and elegant brick colonnades form a refined and cohesive ensemble. The central courtyard, designed as a luminous and welcoming shared space, becomes the vibrant heart of the project. A colorful metal staircase, crafted by Atomic Soudure, connects both buildings and adds a distinctive, curated touch.
As a finalist for the 2025 Ordre des architectes du Québec Awards of Excellence, Binôme stands as a model of successful urban revitalization. It illustrates how thoughtful, well-executed construction can elevate Montreal’s built environment while addressing today’s densification challenges.

A rugged vanity with aged industrial drawers and flea-market accessories is the perfect counterpoint to contemporary Gessi faucets and lavs in this New York Loft bathroom conceived by the Gessi Design Studio.

For a family putting down lasting roots in Park City, this 10,000-square-foot estate within the gated enclave of Quarry Mountain Ranch is conceived as both sanctuary and legacy. Designed to evolve alongside its owners, the home balances permanence with a deep sensitivity to the land it inhabits.
Thoughtfully positioned within an alpine meadow shaped by the gentle flow of McLeod Creek, the residence embraces its setting. The waterway threads through the property, sustaining native grasses and drawing elk, deer, and migratory birdlife, grounding daily life in the rhythms of season and landscape.
Broad planes of glass and sheltering rooflines frame uninterrupted views of ski slopes and distant ridgelines, while long sightlines pull natural light deep into the interior. Terraces and covered outdoor rooms mediate between house and meadow, creating spaces for gathering, reflection, and year-round connection to the outdoors.
A restrained palette of wood and stone echoes the textures of the terrain, lending warmth and durability to the home’s contemporary expression. A separate guest house extends the architectural language, forming a discreet compound that supports family life, hospitality, and the enduring cadence of alpine living.

The new construction luxury home was designed by our Carmel design-build studio with the concept of 'hygge' in mind – crafting a soothing environment that exudes warmth, contentment, and coziness without being overly ornate or cluttered. Inspired by Scandinavian style, the design incorporates clean lines and minimal decoration, set against soaring ceilings and walls of windows. These features are all enhanced by warm finishes, tactile textures, statement light fixtures, and carefully selected art pieces.
In the living room, a bold statement wall was incorporated, making use of the 4-sided, 2-story fireplace chase, which was enveloped in large format marble tile. Each bedroom was crafted to reflect a unique character, featuring elegant wallpapers, decor, and luxurious furnishings. The primary bathroom was characterized by dark enveloping walls and floors, accentuated by teak, and included a walk-through dual shower, overhead rain showers, and a natural stone soaking tub.
An open-concept kitchen was fitted, boasting state-of-the-art features and statement-making lighting. Adding an extra touch of sophistication, a beautiful basement space was conceived, housing an exquisite home bar and a comfortable lounge area.

A couple was looking to move downtown to a pied-a-terre where they could live and work amidst their large collection of African art. In the end, they purchased 3,600 sf of raw space at Locust Walk at Washington Square, a historic turn of the century, five-story building located in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.
The rectangular space has large numbers of windows on two exposures, and a linear scheme was developed. All walls and built-ins were pulled away from the exterior walls, providing for an open vista along the full extent along the exterior face. By not breaking the apartment down into smaller enclosed rooms, the full breadth of the space can be taken in and experienced.
A half-round gallery space greets visitors as one moves through the entry. At this point, public spaces extend in one direction, and more private spaces, including a large home office and the master suite extend in the other direction.
In order to best display the sculptural artwork, the spaces were conceived of a clean, drywall boxes. The existing heavy timber structure and steel frame was encased in drywall as well, creating a quiet backdrop to the real star - the beloved art that fills this apartment's every room.

This stunning modern home has been meticulously crafted to cater to the dynamic lifestyle of a young, vibrant family. Nestled in the picturesque heart of wine country, this residence was conceived with a deep appreciation for indoor-outdoor living. Embracing its natural surroundings, the house is strategically positioned to capture breathtaking panoramic views while providing ample space for outdoor gatherings and entertainment.
Inside, the interior space is intelligently divided into three distinct zones. The public living area welcomes guests with open arms, offering a harmonious blend of comfort and sophistication. The two-bedroom suite provides cozy retreats for family members or guests, ensuring privacy and relaxation. Finally, the separate master suite stands as a sanctuary of luxury, complete with an artfully designed interior that fosters serenity and creativity.
This home represents a seamless fusion of modern design and the beauty of its wine country locale, making it the perfect haven for a family seeking both elegance and functionality.

A Whole House Transformation – conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. There were structural considerations and the overall floor plan design centered on maximizing the views. Additions to this home totaled over 1,200 square feet. What was once the master suite, on the second floor, is now a teenagers bedroom. The master suite was relocated to the first floor and is now overlooking the pool, pool house and patio with panoramic views of the backyard. The front entrance closet became the new entrance for the master suite, which includes a sprawling bathroom and boutique closet. Underneath this area is the new theater and billiard room located in the lower level. A new front entrance and roof gables were added for a seamless new exterior look on the right side of the house. The new functional home office, gourmet kitchen, wainscot dining room, and laundry on the main level were taken down to the studs. A new traditional style for the home was created with new cabinetry, trim and millwork, space planning and detail. The lower level was gutted and turned into an award winning showpiece with gym, full wet bar and kitchen, wine nook, family room and game room marrying the new addition with theater and billiard area. The entire exterior stucco was taken off the home and pool house replacing it with stone, stone pillars, shakes and board and batten. The small screen deck was torn off making for expansive 3 season living with a new covered stone grill area. The patio was expanded with a stone fireplace overlooking the entire backyard and pool area. Adding to the new design were landscape features with a new concrete driveway, stone address pier light, stamped concrete walkway to the newly created front covered porch and bead board ceiling, creating an amazing first impression.

The fact that this home is in a development called Providence now seems perfectly fitting. Chris, the owner, was merely considering the possibility of downsizing from a formal residence outside Atlanta when he happened on the small complex of luxury brownstones under construction in nearby Roswell. “I wandered into The Providence by chance and loved what I saw. The developer, his wife, and the agent were there and discussing how Cantoni was going to finish out one of the units, and so we all started talking,” Chris explains “They asked if I wanted to meet with the designer from Cantoni, and suggested I could customize the home as I saw fit, and that did it for me. I was sold.”
Cantoni was originally approached by Mike and Joy Walsh, of Lehigh Homes, to create a contemporary model home to be featured on the Roswell Woman’s Club home tour. “Since Chris bought the brownstone right after we agreed to do the design work,” Lorna Hunter recalls, “we brought him in on the meetings with the architects to help finalize the layout.” From selecting tile and counter tops, to designing the kitchen and baths, to the furniture, art and even linens—Cantoni was involved with every phase of the project. “This home really represents the complete range of design and staging services we offer at Cantoni,” says Lorna. “Rooms were reconfigured to allow for changes Chris found appealing, and every tile and doorknob was thoughtfully chosen to complete the overall look.”
Chris found an easy rapport with Lorna. “I have always been drawn to contemporary décor,” he explains, “ so Lorna and I hit it off immediately.” Among the custom design ideas the two conceived for the 2,600 sq. ft. 3/3 brownstone: creating a “wing wall” (open on both sides) to form a sitting area adjacent to the guest room
downstairs, removing the elevator to enhance a sense of openness while leaving the 3-story shaft as a unique focal point, and choosing to expand the height of windows on the third level to maximize the flow of natural light.
The Providence is ideally located near quaint shops, great restaurants, jogging trails and a scenic river—not to mention it’s just four miles from Chris’ office. The project represents the breadth and depth of Cantoni’s in-house creative resources, and proves again that GREAT DESIGN IS A WAY OF LIFE.

Vistafolia's modern and flexible Artificial Green Wall design offers real customer value, providing excellent bespoke solutions for any client requirement. This roof terrace had an exceptionally long, south-facing space with parapet walls clad in metal sheeting, creating an environment too hot and inhospitable for real planting. The limited area coverage was also a big issue, as putting in living plant systems would significantly reduce the floor space and hamper mobility.
Our Vistafolia Panels, which can be customized to fit any conceivable dimension, fulfilled the client’s desire to look out to beautiful greenery by creating a simple solution to the problem with our versatile system and design expertise.

The view terrace/patio was completely re-conceived.
A new spa was placed at the edge of the patio, thrust out over the edge and into the view, grounded with stone planters.
An eliptical patio engages with pre-existing limestone boulders.
Supports for the deck are clad in limestone.
Composite decking and cable rails are new.

The existing under-utilized garage will be converted into a modern style home office & future ADU.
This detached residential home office & future accessory dwelling will serve as a focus work space, as well as an independent living space for family or guests to stay overnight with privacy from the main home. The interior has been personalized with an open lofted space and full height shelving for books or other storage. A custom design rolling library ladder will reinforce the library ambiance. The “Loft-brary” also utilizes a floor to ceiling corner glass window system, allowing it to be closely connected to the adjacent Japanese style landscaping.
Primarily serving as a home office studio, the interior is conceived to be open & spacious with lots of shared light, with a lofted upper floor work area taking advantage of views overlooking the adjacent valley. A small kitchen and full bathroom are provided with adequate space for the future bedroom.
Careful attention was given to the solar conditions of the building’s orientation, and an integrated exterior shading system is provided to mitigate the challenging afternoon sun.
A second floor covered exterior deck is provided to allow for year round fresh air work breaks. Propel was hired as architect and landscape designer on the project and we are currently exploring small variations in the plan before proceeding with full construction documentation, engineering, permitting and construction. Target completion is late summer 2022.
