The homeowner felt closed-in with a small entry to the kitchen which blocked off all visual and audio connections to the rest of the first floor. The small and unimportant entry to the kitchen created a bottleneck of circulation between rooms. Our goal was to create an open connection between 1st floor rooms, make the kitchen a focal point and improve general circulation. We removed the major wall between the kitchen & dining room to open up the site lines and expose the full extent of the first floor. We created a new cased opening that framed the kitchen and made the rear Palladian style windows a focal point. White cabinetry was used to keep the kitchen bright and a sharp contrast against the wood floors and exposed brick. We painted the exposed wood beams white to highlight the hand-hewn character. The open kitchen has created a social connection throughout the entire first floor. The communal effect brings this family of four closer together for all occasions. The island table has become the hearth where the family begins and ends there day. It's the perfect room for breaking bread in the most casual and communal way.

Formally the barn's main entrance, the gathering area is the primary connection between the kitchen and the four-season porch. Large scale glass doors and transom windows mark the transition with a nod to the barn's history, while offering a virtually unobstructed view to the room beyond.

The Cicero is a modern styled home for today’s contemporary lifestyle. It features sweeping facades with deep overhangs, tall windows, and grand outdoor patio. The contemporary lifestyle is reinforced through a visually connected array of communal spaces. The kitchen features a symmetrical plan with large island and is connected to the dining room through a wide opening flanked by custom cabinetry. Adjacent to the kitchen, the living and sitting rooms are connected to one another by a see-through fireplace. The communal nature of this plan is reinforced downstairs with a lavish wet-bar and roomy living space, perfect for entertaining guests. The client wanted to open up the front of the house, integrating the kitchen and the family room as one space. Two walls were removed and replaced with two support beams and a column, resulting in one spacious room. In order to delineate a transition between the space, a two level kitchen island was built -- adding counter space and additional seating. The soapstone counter-top, farmhouse sink and faucet pair well with the craftsman style cabinets and 4x8 backsplash tile. The pendant lights that hang over the counter and the under-cabinet LED lights add a warm glow to the space. The 12x24 porcelain tile for the floor blends well with the warm oak flooring.

A serene riverside retreat in Aspen, this home blends natural materials, custom details, and modern lines to create a timeless, sensory-rich sanctuary rooted in calm, connection, and flow. The tranquil outdoor area, complete with comfortable furniture, creates a pleasant space for gathering with friends and family. Lush greenery and a mature tree enhance the peaceful, nature-inspired setting.

The velvet dining chairs, oversized mirrors, and textured gray wallpaper blend beautifully with the open floorplan of this home. This custom built Olathe home was built in the late 1980’s when mauve was still the rage. It was unusual to have a master bedroom on the first floor, but this was just the ticket for our clients. With it’s beautiful acreage and surrounding our client’s decided to stay in their home as they age. The master bathroom was desperate for an update and there was mold in the shower which required swift action to eliminate. The tub was to be eliminated and a larger shower with clean Euro glass doors was requested. The vanity with a makeup area was perfect although new painted cabinets with updated interiors and an area for a plugged in blow dryer was requested. The client loved the idea of a perfume cabinet to store her collection. Design Connection Inc. Kanas City Interior Designer provided: Auto Cad drawings and elevations for design details, tile, cabinets, painting and installation as well as project management.

Because the family room is now used for lounging and watching TV, we decided to utilize the hearth room as a sitting room that joins the kitchen and dining areas in comfort and in style. A Jack and Jill bathroom divide up the space between the upper bedrooms. Wallpaper was chosen for its endurance, color and texture along with a new custom vanity, mirror, lighting and accessories. The sunroom addition turned out beautifully! Design Connection, Inc. incorporated shiplap on the walls of this four seasons room to create interest and painted the walls and shiplap in the same beige tone to give the room a continuous feel. We added the four side chairs upholstered in a large-scale pattern in beige tones, and grouped them around an ottoman. The new room is a perfect place to read and relax!
