We have had sea or bay side projects over the years which brings with them a special set of opportunities and constraints. In this case we were challenged with creating a pool garden that had views to the bay. As I don't like to have a swimming pool just as a swimming pool room, I made this pool area a pool 'garden' where accessing the pool is off the main terrace and one enters a garden that has a lap pool, not a lap pool that has a garden.

My client wanted to update her traditional kitchen. Due to budget constraints, she chose to keep her cabinets. We changed everything else, including the counter tops, backsplash, appliances, flooring, paint, bar stools and pendants. Overall, we went from a traditional to a transitional design.

This compact bathroom and laundry has all the amenities of a much larger space in a 5'-3" x 8'-6" footprint. We removed the 1980's bath and laundry, rebuilt the sagging structure, and reworked ventilation, electric and plumbing. The shower couldn't be smaller than 30" wide, and the 24" Miele washer and dryer required 28". The wall dividing shower and machines is solid plywood with tile and wall paneling.
Schluter system electric radiant heat and black octogon tile completed the floor. We worked closely with the homeowner, refining selections and coming up with several contingencies due to lead times and space constraints.

This historic 1910 Federal style house was carefully renovated and decorated by SRA in phases while the family - including five children - lived there. Flow issues created by haphazard additions by previous owners were eliminated with a clear-cut circulation path. Today, perfectly proportioned rooms and open spaces are elegantly connected within the constraints of the existing 7-bedroom, 6-bathroom structure.

Streamside at The Wedshire. Enjoy the clean mountain air while relaxing on the deck. Here we went really economical due to the constraints within the building. We placed a composite click-connect decking tile over the existing and required plywood balcony surface to spruce up the space as best we could.

Working within a set of constraints, whether of space or budget, challenges my creativity and leads to a beautiful end result. The old kitchen used the space very poorly. The intent was just to replace the countertop. But once we investigated, the inferior cabinets needed replacing, too, so a rethink of space usage created a small and stylish kitchen of lasting quality.

This fun classic kitchen in Gold River features Columbia frameless cabinets in Sandy Hook grey. A green glass backsplash in a random matte and polished pattern complements the cabinets which are faced with both painted wood and frosted glass. The Silestone countertops in the Lyra finish have an ogee bullnose edge. The floors are finished in a rich brown porcelain tile of varying sizes that are made to resemble distressed wood.

This 27 square foot powder room is by far the smallest space in this 3,200 square foot home in Nicasio CA. Where some might restrain themselves from highlighting such a utilitarian space, we elevated this tiny room to one of the most unique spaces in the home. The powder room sits behind a board-formed concrete wall adjacent to the front door of the home. In conjunction with our structural engineer and a master-mason, we developed a way to embed ¾” planks of acrylic into the South facing concrete wall. During the day, the acrylic captures the intense sun (while the concrete keeps the space temperate) creating a vibrant and entirely unexpected light show when one opens the powder room door. From the outside though, the acrylic planks appear simply as dark striations in the concrete. At night though, a timed light inside the bathroom illuminates the backside of the wall and creates a glowing nightlight at the front door.
The constraints of board-formed concrete and the sequencing of this type of construction determined a pattern that could both retain the material integrity of the concrete while pushing its limits. In addition, the requirements for the vertical members of rebar created a staggered pattern that suggests a sense of movement; a theme that is carried throughout the project. After several experimental concrete pours, the final detail turned a typical powder room into a design feature that pushes the limits of material and construction and jolts our preconceptions of what lies behind a simple bathroom door. The wall appears to transform -- from solid to penetrable, from tame to wild, from utilitarian to spectacle, from dark and stoic to light-filled and poetic.
