Deck - mid-sized contemporary backyard deck idea in Dallas with decking, a fire pit and a pergola

Located near Ennis, Montana, this cabin captures the essence of rustic style while maintaining modern comforts. Jack Watkins’ father, the namesake of the creek by which this home is built, was involved in the construction of the Old Faithful Lodge. He originally built the cabin for he and his family in 1917, with small additions and upgrades over the years. The new owners’ desire was to update the home to better facilitate modern living, but without losing the original character. Windows and doors were added, and the kitchen and bathroom were completely remodeled. Well-placed porches were added to further integrate the interior spaces to their adjacent exterior counterparts, as well as a mud room—a practical requirement in rural Montana. Today, details like the unique juniper handrail leading up to the library, will remind visitors and guests of its historical Western roots.

Drop-in bathtub - transitional master drop-in bathtub idea in New York with a drop-in sink

This very steep hillside is the focal point of the back yard as it is located along the outdoor living area, patio and courtyard just outside a wall of french doors. It was too steep to mow, dry, rocky and barren until we worked our magic. The client was from Scotland and desired a landscape that would remind her of a traditional " Rockery" with alpine plants, heaths and heathers. Since those specific plants don't do well in Atlanta, we choose plants that offered similar colors and textures. When the garden is the most lush, as seen here, only a few rocks are visible. In the winter when half of these plants are dormant, the hand selected and carefully placed boulders balance the design. This Buckhead client absolutely loves the results! The term “industrial” evokes images of large factories with lots of machinery and moving parts. These cavernous, old brick buildings, built with steel and concrete are being rehabilitated into very desirable living spaces all over the country. Old manufacturing spaces have unique architectural elements that are often reclaimed and repurposed into what is now open residential living space. Exposed ductwork, concrete beams and columns, even the metal frame windows are considered desirable design elements that give a nod to the past. This unique loft space is a perfect example of the rustic industrial style. The exposed beams, brick walls, and visible ductwork speak to the building’s past. Add a modern kitchen in complementing materials and you have created casual sophistication in a grand space. New Additions to Hoover + Hill This project is a continuation of the renovation and updating work Flavin Architects had previously completed at the 1958 Wales house, designed by architect Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Our clients, a young family, desired more space for guests, a home office, a yoga studio, and covered car parking. The challenge was to respect the architects’ original vision and not to interfere with the perfect cruciform plan of the house. To accomplish these goals, we converted the existing garage/workshop structure into a guest house and then designed a new, separate carport/storage building. The new carport building shares the low-slope gable of the original Hoover structure. The post and beam structure characteristic of Hoover’s design is updated through the use of galvanized steel posts and I beams. The galvanized beams cantilever to support a sheltered walkway leading from the parking to a guest house terrace defined in relationship to the three structures surrounding it. The terrace is paved in slate with a central rain garden. Wood lattice clads the carport, providing good ventilation and letting the building glow like a lantern at night. Our guest house renovation celebrates the unique structural timber ceiling of the original garage. We replaced opaque plywood trusses with a slender cable truss structurally engineered by Webb Structural Services. This cable truss allows for a view of the timber ceiling. A wall of glass facing the courtyard replaced the original garage door. A murphy bed in the rear room enables quick conversion from guest quarters to weight room.

This basement appeared have many functions as a family room, kid's playroom, and bedroom. The existing wall of mirrors was hiding a closet which overwhelmed the space. The lower level is separated from the rest of the house, and has a full bathroom and walk out so we went with an extra bedroom capability. Without losing the family room atmosphere this would become a lower level "get away" that could transition back and forth. We added pocket doors at the opening to this area allowing the space to be closed off and separated easily. Emtek privacy doors give the bedroom separation when desired. Next we installed a Murphy Bed in the center portion of the existing closet. With new closets, bi-folding closet doors, and door panels along the bed frame the wall and room were complete.

A spacious Tudor Revival in Lower Westchester was revamped with an open floor plan and large kitchen with breakfast area and counter seating. The leafy view on the range wall was preserved with a series of large leaded glass windows by LePage.
