The sloping front yard has many architectural features with the front porch railing and the super old alligator junipers that offer structure and partial shade. Shenandoah Grass is interplanted among other perennials including hardy plumbago. The original 100-year-old retaining wall is masked with the trailing plants.

DM Designs - Chicago Design Objective: Convert a studio on the 87th floor of the John Hancock Building into a sophisticated, playful, elegant Mad Men-esque Mens Club / Pied a Terre. This was a complete gut renovation. Our inspiration was the vintage orange tweed sofa the client had purchased for the space. We wanted classy, not kitschy, so designing the "bones" of the condo in timeless and elegant materials was essential. To ground the space and make a dramatic first impression, we selected reclaimed hardwood flooring from a 1800 French Chateau and laid it on the timeless and classic herringbone pattern. From there, we added seagrass wallpaper, custom wood paneled walls, vintage gun and decorative mirrors from the 1970's for the kitchen backsplash and added classic furnishings such as the Platner dining table and black tulip chairs. The coolest feature by far was the custom bookshelf/hidden door we designed to create a library foyer that masked the entry to the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, we converted a vintage, mid century modern bar cabinet into a vanity complete with a honey onyx countertop that lights up from within when you enter the space. Completing the space overall is a framed, original Men's Club Charter that greets you upon entry and that belonged to the client's father.

Wide & multiple walkway's into the kitchen space always family and guests to easily access everything, as well as provide the proper spacing for people to get by when an appliance is being used. Shaw's, durable, wide plank, white oak flooring with a hint of white wash was selected to keep the space light. mask the forever shedding, yellow labs fur, and add alittle rustic look to the space.

Inspiration for a transitional sunroom remodel in Denver

In the front of the home, we made recommend addition contouring to increase the curb appeal and views of the home from the road. The backyard featured a multi-level walkout basement which created unique terraced entertaining spaces. From the covered patio space, we incorporated a large boulder wall to create extra flat usable lawn space for the kids to play. Our design team created a unique swimming pool area mid-level between the basement and the first-floor covered patio. The homeowner requested a small swimming pool with a larger entertaining space around it. The space includes a circular gas firepit surrounded a sitting wall and pillars. The customer chose a natural look by selecting Lampus Desert Blend Country Stone pillars. The homeowner wanted to incorporate a spa into the entertaining space without obstructing the view from the upper level space and pool area. Our design team solved this by integrating the spa into the landscape surrounded by plantings and boulders to mask the look of the bulky spa. The pergola above the spa with a custom drapery created an elegant look and provided a nice cover to incorporate lighting for evening enjoyment.

Sunday, May 31, 3:30-5:00pm | Hollywood Hills Hollywood Hillside Residence by Judy Kameon of Elysian Landscapes Nestled in one of L.A.’s iconic canyons, a barren one-acre plot was transformed into a lush landscape - embracing the indoor/outdoor experience established by the architecture while preserving the panoramic vistas. A series of linked garden spaces were created for daily use and entertaining and plant materials used strategically to screen out the neighbors, but not the views. One of the many challenges at the site was integrating two structurally required retaining walls into the design to accommodate the 30-foot elevation change on the steep hillside. An intimate nook with cascading vines creatively masks one wall, while the other area was transformed into an elegant outdoor dining patio that includes a new spa, an L-shaped pool, and a variety of intimate spaces to lounge in and relax. The dramatic palette of silver, burgundy, blue and green subtropical succulents and Mediterranean perennials, along with the enticing scent of lavender, thyme and rosemary, are layered throughout the property to create a private urban oasis. Designer Kim Smart was given the task of creating an open, uncluttered living space that reflected the owner's modern Zen style, while honoring the house's 1920s heritage. By using unifying features and colors, as well as a lot of natural light, she created a large space with style and unity.

Any house can look beautiful and modern with dramatic colors. However, those can be a huge risk for a home-owner, and can look terrible when done by the wrong person. Poor color combinations and trusting imperfect tools, like masking tape, over professional and experienced technique can make this project a nightmare. Smart design, clean "edjes" and a professional touch can do it right, and give a living room like this new life.
